Tata Motors has been in the news for sometime for all the wrong reasons. The company did not have any new model on the horizon so it was a bit of a surprise when it launched the HorizonNext initiative. The first steps that Tata Motors took under this initiative saw changes made to existing models that were no unnoticeable that probably the designers themselves couldn’t spot them. Tata does not know what to do with the Nano and has been experimenting with its positioning while we believe that it should have stuck to the original positioning of the worlds most inexpensive proper car and should have upped the quality without touching the price too much. Then the whole idea of making changes to the Sumo Gold and the Indica and Indigo CS that were completely unnoticeable was probably the worst marketing strategy.
Now Tata has put its bet on CNG fuelled cars to push up sales. Only time will tell the story about how well Tata has thought out this CNG strategy. We are a bit sceptical about this doing too much in sales terms since CNG is not easily available in any part of the country still. So the whole thing looks like making noise only for the sake of making noise. But as patriotic Indians we here hope that the true Indian car manufacturer gets its act right in the near future and becomes a player of consequence again in the Indian car market.
