Gumpert Explosion

Gumpert threw a surprise left hook with the Explosion at the Geneva Motor Show. We’re not talking about the debatable looks, but rather the phenomenal figures Gumpert flaunts as coming from a minuscule 2.0 litre engine. Gumpert claims figures of 0-100kph in 3.0 seconds FLAT from the engine that churns out 420hp and has a maximum torque of 520Nm! Gumpert has announced prices starting at 105,000 Euros, price not including VAT. The naturally aspirated Porsche 911 GT3 which has a much more sensible name, but actually goes up in flames ( seen the recent episode of TG?) takes 3.5 seconds to hit the 100kph mark from standstill. While the Porsche makes more power (475hp) it makes less torque of 440Nm compared to the 520Nm of the Gumpert.

The Gumpert Explosion is a massive departure from the Gumpert apollo. The Explosion is a front engined, four wheel drive car that’s more rally car like than supercar. That’s a good thing considering Roland Gumpert was in charge of Audi Sport and Special Development in the 1980s, the heyday of the Audi Quattros which won numerous constructor’s and driver’s world championships in rally sport.
