Mercedes Benz V6 Formula 1 Engine

While the Force India team has been acquiring engines from Mercedes-Benz since 2009, it is with the signing of this agreement that in addition to the engine, Mercedes-Benz will also provide gearbox and hydraulic systems. The term complete Power Unit in the contract includes the Internal Combustion Engine as well as the Energy Recovery System.

Under the new regulations for 2014, the engine will be a 1.6 turbocharged V6 powerplant.

Dr Vijay Mallya, Team Principal and Managing Director of Sahara Force India said “Our new agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the coming years is the most significant in the history of Sahara Force India. With new powertrain regulations being introduced next year, I can’t think of a better partner to work with as Formula One enters a new and exciting era. The agreement gives us the long-term stability we require and will enable us to continue our journey towards the front of the Formula One grid.”

Toto Wolf, Executive Director of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS: “It is a significant milestone to announce our first long-term agreement for powertrain supply under the 2014 regulations. Sahara Force India was our first genuine customer in Formula One back in 2009 and we are delighted to enter an expanded, long-term relationship with them from 2014 onwards. This long-term agreement offers excellent value in terms of the balance between price and performance. We hope it will mean Mercedes-Benz and Sahara Force India working together for the entire life cycle of the new powertrain generation.”

Ferrari Factory 01

2012 was Ferrari’s most successful year. A total of 7,318 road cars were delivered to dealers in 2012, while revenues were up by 8% over last year at 2.433 billion Euro. Trading profit jumped by 12.1 per cent to 350 million euro, while net profits were 244 million Euros (a 17.8 per cent increase).

At the Geneva Motor Show, Luca di Montezemolo had announced that all Ferrari employees would receive a special bonus linked to the financial results of the three year period, 2010 to 2012.

Yesterday employees of the Italian company received their promised bonuses. The employees were awarded a month’s pay as bonus for each successful year from 2010 to 2012. This in addition to a ‘competitive bonus’ to be paid out next month. An employee making 1500 Euros would receive 4500 Euros as bonus and another 4000 Euros as the competitive bonus next month.

“Our company ended 2012 with record results after a triennium of continuous growth,” wrote Montezemolo in a letter to the employees. “That is down to the extraordinary amount of work you have done. In the current extremely difficult economic climate, which has seen many companies in our sector and others, experiencing great difficulty, thanks to you, we are a really nice exception to that, a company producing ever more models and one which is recognised as a great brand everywhere. Let’s continue like this, thanks to all of you for what you have done so far and especially for what you will do.”

In a harsh economic situation it is reassuring to see an exotic car maker do well enough to hand out healthy bonuses for its employees.

Scuderia Ferrari Game 2013

Scuderia Ferrari has announced that the official racing game for this year is available on iTunes for USD 1.99 and Euro 1.29 worldwide. Ferrari has also announced a contest that runs from March 2013 to December 2013 where contestants post their highest scores on the game to the leaderboards for prizes including ten F138 miniature cars with Fernando Alonso’s or Felipe Massa’s autograph sponsored by the Ferrari racing team.

The game features 6 tracks in Brazil, China, Germany, Italy, Monaco and U.S and Ferrari says the Italian track is inspired and modeled after Ferrari’s renowned track, Mugello Circuit. We wonder if the other tracks stay true to the real world ones. Multiplayer mode is possible by bluetooth. There’s also a pit stop challenge. The game of course is socially enabled and you can share you progress on FB and twitter.

Jeep Cherokee 2014

The story of Fiat’s 6 year old tryst with Tata Motors has finally come to an end. Fiat now wants to pull up its socks and start getting models out of the showroom and onto the streets. “We all believe that we have scratched the bottom of the barrel,” Enrico Atanasio, managing director of Fiat India told Reuters. “(Our performance) is not what the brand deserves.” A market share of 0.3% this fiscal year stands testament to Atanasio’s statement. Having sold an absymal 203 units this February, Fiat has to step on the untrodden path and try to rebuild the brand.

The Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler due for India are the baby steps towards this goal. Fiat also plans to bring in the Abarth variants of the Fiat 500 and the Punto to cater to the enthusiast.

Atanasio believes Fiat can end 2013 with 1% of the market and aim for 5% longer term. Fiat also plans to end this year with at least 112 dealers. There are also plans in 2015 to being production and export of a mini SUV under the Jeep brand. Atanasio however has said that Fiat will not launch a new model in the lower priced segment which rakes in the volumes for the lieks of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.

The A3 has long held promise for the Indian enthusiast market but Audi India has held back wanting for something just a little bit more before storming the Indian market. Say hello to the Audi A3 in its sedan form. The slapped on boot might just be that something more that could set the cash registers ringing at Audi India. The Audi A3 sedan was unveiled at the New York Motor Show with powertrain options including the 2.0 L TDI, 1.4 TFSI, 1.8 TFSI while the performance oriented S3 sedan, to be launched in a few months will be powered by the 2.0 TFSI making 300 hp!

Short overhangs and a sharp shoulder line set the A3 Sedan apart. Audi calls the shoulder line “tornado line”! The toranado line rises more sharply on the sedan than on the hatch and the sportback. Air intakes, the singleframe grille, the hood and the bumpers have all been slightly tweaked. There’s also a lip spoiler on the boot of the A3 Sedan. LED lights are optional.

The use of aluminium for the engine hood and ‘hot-shaped’ steel parts in the passenger compartment enable the A3 sedan to shed any unwanted pounds.

The engine options available are

1. The 2.0 TDI making 150 hp with a peak torque of 320 Nm
2. The 1.4 TFSI makes 140 hp and develops peak torque of 250 Nm. COD (cylinder on demand) system deactivates two cylinders when load is less for improved fuel efficiency.
3. The 1.8 TFSI makes 180 hp with peak torque of 250 Nm. Dual injection into the combustion chambers and the induction manifold enable sporty performance with Audi reporting figures of 0-100kph time of 7.3 seconds and top speed of 235 kph.

Handling on the Audi should be exceptional considering the engineering gone into it. Audi has taken effort to ensure balance weight distribution. All engines are tilted 12° to the rear and the front wheel suspensions are placed far ahead to result in a 60:40 weight distribution.

The Audi A3 Sedan has 16- to 18-inch-wheels; quattro GmbH can also deliver wheels up to 19 inches in diameter.

A 2 litre engine employing Audi’s most advanced engine technology like dual fuel injection, exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head, the Audi valvelift system and a rotary valve module for thermal management makes 300 hp and 380 Nm!

0-100 km/h times shoot to 4.9 seconds compared when paired with the S tronic transmission and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

The suspension lowers the body 25 mm. Braking duties are taken care of by the 340mm front discs hidden behind 18 inch wheels. The electrically assisted progressive steering varies the steering gear ratio depending on the driving situation. At the middle it is less sensitive while towards the ends the sensitivity increases. The Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system is standard, and the Audi magnetic ride damper control system is available as an option.

Audi S3 Sedan 08

The S3 sedan has slight changes to the bumpers, the singleframe grille, air intakes, exterior mirror housings, side sills and rear spoiler. The other distinguishing feature would be the four oval tailpipes of the exhaust system. The S3 Sedan offers sport seats, instruments with gray dials and trim strips in black 3D look.

Daniel Craig Reveals The New Range Rover Sport 00

In a first of its kind live reveal, Land Rover shut down some streets of New York for Daniel Craig to blitz through in style to the venue of the all new 2014 Range Rover Sport reveal. Directed by action film 2nd unit director Jonathan P B Taylor, famous for his work in Fast & Furious, Spiderman, Captain America and more recently Die Hard, the part short film, part live drive tells the story of a driver tasked with delivering a top secret package.

Starting at the Land Rover manufacturing plant in Solihull, UK, the car is shipped under the cover of darkness in a large container over to Manhattan. It is then unveiled and driven expertly through the streets of the city, over Manhattan Bridge and through a closed off tunnel, in a bid by its driver, Daniel Craig, to get it to the launch venue on time.

Land Rover also points out that they share with Daniel Craig a link with charity S.A.F.E. Land Rover, having previously donated a Land Rover Defender to the Kenyan NGO and UK Charity 4 years ago will continue its support and is donating an additional vehicle to the charity later this year.

The ungodly hours in India meant many of us missed the live broadcast in spite of being promised ‘front row’ seats by Range Rover. You know what we mean if you registered at newrangeroversport.com! Anyway, here are some videos captured by the kind souls at the event.

We’ve seen the XKR-S, the most powerful and fastest production Jaguar ever built. Jaguar ups the ante with the XKR-S GT. A mouthful name for what will be one of the most rarest Jaguar ‘R’ cars as production will be limited to 30 units. The XKR-S GT, was developed by Jaguar’s ETO division and Jaguar says, is the ultimate road-going but track-ready version of the XK coupe. The XKR-S GT reaches 60mph in 3.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 186mph.
To start with the XKR-S GT is an evolution of the XKR-S. Most of the development time has gone into optimizing the car’s aerodynamics. A carbon-fibre front splitter, dive planes, extended wheelarch spats, an elevated rear wing, rear diffuser and an aluminium valance enable the XKR-S GT to achieve maximum downforce of 145kg.

The XKR-S GT also gets a carbon ceramic brake system, for the first time in a production Jaguar. 398mm discs up front and and 380mm discs at the rear work with six- and four-piston monoblock calipers respectively to bring this lithe monster to a halt.

A wider front track, increased camber, revised bushings, a new steering system and faster steering ratio all improve handling. Height-adjustable and bespoke adaptive dampers feature a race-derived twin spring system.

The powerplant is the 550PS, 680Nm supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine and power is transmitted to the wheels through a six-speed transmission and active electronic differential.

New, wider, 20-inch forged and lightweight alloy wheels are designed to optimise brake cooling and are shod with Pirelli Corsa 255/35 front and 305/30 rear tyres to maximise grip.
