The flagship Jaguar sedan now gets the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine delivering 550PS and 680Nm of torque! Jaguar says the XJR is the most focused, agile and responsive Jaguar XJ ever made. Powered is transmitted through an eight speed gearbox and the XJR is capable of 0-60 mph times of 4.4 seconds! The top speed of course is limited to 174mph (280km/h).

The Jaguar XJR gets a new front splitter. The twin chromed air intakes up front ” have become an ‘R’ model ‘signature element’, acting as a visual reference to the car’s twin superchargers,” says Wayne Burgess, Studio Director, Jaguar Design. Jaguar says the ‘R’ bonnet louvres are not just for aesthetic reasons but also to give the car optimum levels of high speed stability.

At the rear we have a lip spoiler. The five-spoke, lightweight Farallon forged alloy wheels are stunning to say the least! The alloys are available in either Sparkle silver or Technical grey finishes. Optional on the XJR is the a Sport pack grille with chrome surround and black mesh. The XJR is available in ten shades : Polaris White, Ebony, Ultimate Black, Stratus Grey, Lunar Grey, Rhodium Silver, Cashmere, Caviar, Carnelian Red and Black Amethyst.

The all-aluminium quad-cam engine makes 550PS and 680Nm of torque. The 5.0 litre supercharged engine boasts of direction injection ( spray-guided direct injection-SGDI) and variable valve timing (dual independent variable cam timing-DIVCT) that deliver stunning performance and appreciable fuel efficiency. The aluminium block is stiffened with cast iron liners.

The transmission is another example of how intelligent the XJR is. The transmission, when in auto mode can understand the driver’s mood and adjust shifts based on his/her requirements. Corner Recognition knows when the car is negotiating a turn and will hold the correct gear until the turn is complete. The system similarly holds gear when overtaking.

Electronic Active Differential and Dynamic Stability Control systems have been calibrated to handle the additional power.

Aston Martin Rapide S 02

The Rapide S was unveiled to the world just ahead of the Geneva Motor Show where it made its public debut. The reaction to the new Rapide S has, shall we say, been divided among enthusiasts. The front grille has been a topic of hot debate while the 81 PS increase is an uncontested win for all. The new Gen 4 AM11 Rapide engine also improves peak torque by 20Nm and torque at 2500 rpm by 50 Nm. The Rapide also gets Aston Martin’s new Adaptive Damping and a new ‘Track’ mode.

Design

Aston Martin Rapide S 05

The front grille is now a single piece full-face aluminium grille. We’re sure Aston Martin would’ve continued with the older grille if not for the pedestrian safety norms. The new grille moves backward in case of an impact with a pedestrian as it absorbs the energy of the impact. This enables Aston Martin to retain the aluminium hood while the others in the industry move to other materials that are more easily deformable.

Aston Martin Rapide S 04

The side profile is largely similar and the at the rear you have a more pronounced lip spoiler that reduces lift at high speeds.

While we aren’t big fans of the new grille, multiple sources claim that those who’ve seen the Rapide S in person have nothing negative to say about the looks of the new four door Aston. The grille is said to be menacing and aggressive.

Interiors

Aston Martin Rapide S 08

The Rapide S uses more leather than any other Aston in the history of the marque. The attention grabbing leathers in use this year are Aston’s exclusive new perforated duotone black and red leather with pure black top surface with a subtle red undertone. Two new interior styling packs, Piano Black and Carbon Fibre are available to order.

Engine, Handling

The Rapide S is built on Aston Martin’s VH architecture, which means the chassis is constructed from lightweight aluminium and bonded with sophisticated epoxy resin. The V12 powerplant of the Rapide gives way to the Gen 4 AM11 Rapide powerplant which shares a major part of its design with the powerplant of the new Vanquish. 558 PS of power and a peak torque figure of 620 Nm. The power has increased by 81 PS while the torque has increased by 20 Nm relative to the Rapide. While the numbers themselves are phenomenal, the new mill also wins hearts for 40Nm more torque between idle and 4000rpm, and 50Nm more at 2500rpm. These figures translate to improved driveability.

The engine is now placed 19mm lower, which lowers the centre of gravity as well as improves pedestrian safety. The increased gap between the engine and the hood makes for a more effective crumple zone of the hood.

The Rapide S gets Gen4 Adaptive Damping. In addition to last generation Rapide’s Normal and Sport mode, there’s also a new Track mode. This also means that the Normal mode is now more plushy, if you can use that word when talking about an Aston Martin.

Oh, lest we forget, there’s also the new alloys. These optional 10 spoke lightweight forged alloy wheels are unique to Rapide S. The alloys are 11% lighter than the standard wheel. The alloys are available in a Silver or Black Diamond Turn finish.

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04 Unveiled at Jerez : Ross Brawn,Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff 01

In an interview to the The Mail on Sunday, Ecclestone says Hamilton approached him in mid 2012 asking him to help engineer a move to Red Bull taking Webber’s place. Bernie says the efforts failed as Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz wanted Webber to stay on.

Autosport reports that Lewis Hamilton has denied that he made any such specific requests. “I think he said something about me talking to Red Bull? I said to my management team to speak to all the teams and give me what the best options were. There was no particular one that I was pushing for more.”

“He seems to only make comments about me for some reason,” said Hamilton. “It makes me a bit nervous because we have quite a good relationship and I’m quite open with him about a lot of stuff. I don’t really know what to say about the comments he made.”

He also added the at the end of the day he was with Mercedes and that it was the best decision he ever made.

Sellerie’Cimes captured the stunning Veneno as it bid farewell to the halls of the 83rd Geneva Motor Show. The Reventon grumble is apparent in the Veneno, with the same V12 being used. The driver who had to back out quite a long way also flips the door open and slides out and perches himself on the door sill to see where he’s going, as many Lambo drivers have since the time of the Countach!

Today was a strange day at the Malaysian Formula1 GP at Sepang.  Sebastian Vettel took victory by ignoring team orders while Nico Rosberg ended up in fourth position by obeying team orders.  That meant that Mark Webber who seemed assured of a victory had to finish second while Lewis Hamilton who could well have finished fourth actually finished third and ahead of his teammate Nico Rosberg who followed team orders.  There was yet another difference.  The Red Bull Racing Renault drivers made their bitterness pretty clear especially Mark Webber, but the Mercedes drivers were very generous to each other with an embarrassed looking Lewis Hamilton admitting to interviewer and commentator Martin Brundle that Nico Rosberg should have stood on the podium and Nico Rosberg while talking to Alex Yoong saying that there was no problem since the team was giving instructions to drivers based on what they could see in the telemetry.

Whatever the other problems it was clear that the Mercedes AMG Petronas cars today had a genuine pace and that team Principal Ross Brawn was better at managing his drivers than Red Bull Racing Renault team Principal Christian Horner was, at least today.  Nico Rosberg was heard repeatedly asking for an opportunity to go ahead of Hamilton, but was politely but firmly told by Brawn to hold station, reasoning that the reason why Hamilton was slow was because he was asked to wind down his pace.  On the other hand as Sebastian Vettel was clearly being told by Christian Horner that they needed to have a talk and Helmut Marko an ardent supporter of Vettel and critic of Webber stood glumly even as Webber took pot shots at Vettel.

Fernando Alonso of the iconic Ferrari team who was one of the favourites tipped off to win the race crashed out of the race pretty early on, but his teammate at Ferrari, a resurgent Felipe Massa followed his 4th position last week in Australia with a fifth at Sepang.  The winner of Australia Kimi Raikonnen could only finish seventh even as his teammate at Romain Grosjean took sixth position.  Nico Hulkenberg who was driving the Sauber Ferrari for the first time this season in a race took ninth place. The fastest lap of the race was set by Sergio Perez who finished with the last place in a McLaren which was not all that better than what it was in Australia.  The other McLaren Mercedes driver Jenson Button retired with gearbox issues while he was in 12th place.  It is believed that Button was deliberately retired in order to be able to change his gearbox without incurring a penalty for the next race in China.  Neither of the Force India cars finished the race, let alone finishing in points.

Secret car compartments, known as ‘traps’ in automotive slang, whether in real life, or in spy movies have for long excited every automotive enthusiast. WIRED details the story of Alfred Anaya, resident of San Fernando, California who can build you one such compartment for a price around $5000. The article mentions secret compartments that do not require the addition of any aftermarket switches that might be noticed by law enforcement officials. The compartments open just by using the standard buttons, but in a specified sequence. One law enforcement official mentions the ‘Silicon Valley of trap making’ where compartments have been built that require voice activation!

A very interesting read providing a glimpse into something we wouldn’t have given a second thought to as being tangible in real life.

n°36 Alpine

Signatech-Alpine presented their new endurance racing prototype at L’Atelier Renault in Paris, France. The n°36 Alpine will defend Alpine’s colours this season at the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours and this year’s European Le Mans Series (ELMS). The Alpine brand returns endurance racing after a 35 year gap. These efforts are part of the brands reemergence in preparation to the big launch in 2016 – the first sports car designed and built by Société des Automobiles Alpine-Caterham, the Alpine-Caterham collaboration borne out of Renault’s Formula One connection with Caterham.

Honda LEAD125 Vietnam

Powered by Honda’s liquid-cooled 125cc single-cylinder engine “eSP” the LEAD125 uses Honda’s ‘enhanced Smart Power’ technologies for high fuel efficiency. The LEAD125 also gets an idling stop system to further improve fuel economy. As you would expect the LEAD125 adopts Honda’s PGM-Fi fuel injection. Surprisingly enough, Honda claims there’s enough space for two full face helmets in the 37L underseat storage space. Rear lights and indicators are all LED.

The LEAD125 also scores on the ergonomics front with the fuel lid and seat being opened by rocker switches instead of the usual slot in the key and twist to open mechanism.

Honda Vietnam will produce 200,000 units of the LEAD125 annually. The vehicles will be sold in Vietnam, and expected to start exporting to Japan in early summer. These activities will make Vietnam the fourth Asian country to provide global production and export, following China, Thailand and India.
