Honda Amaze 01

It would seem that the bookings for the Honda Amaze have begun. The 1.5 L diesel mill in the Amaze is specced to deliver 100PS and 200 Nm of torque, while claiming an ARAI fuel efficiency of 25.8 kpl.

Prices are yet to be announced but with the Amaze being eligible for the excise duty benefits, we think it should be priced competitively. Unless Honda decides to get on its high horse again and prices the Amaze at the usual Honda premium and justifies it based on the truly Amazing numbers claimed for Honda’s first diesel mill in India.

Honda has managed to get these astounding numbers for its diesel mill by extensively reducing mechanical friction in each section. Honda says the friction level is equivalent to that in gasoline engine models. Optimized thermal management system achieved by improvements in the cooling system reduce CO2 output by over 15%. The turbocharger is a compact highly efficient unit.

Overdrive also claims that the heat absorbent windshield used in the Amaze, keep out ‘a significant amount’ of IR radiation and reduces the need for sunfilm.

IndianAutosBlog has a concise article on how the Amaze manages to achieve the kind of fuel economy the numbers claim.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga : Rear

According to ‘reliable’ sources, Autocar India reports that Maruti is planning to tap into the CNG MPV space which currently has no players. The Ertiga CNG is expected to launch in the next 2-3 months. Maruti expects to sell around 1000-1500 units of the Ertiga CNG every month.

Mahindra Quanto 4x4 6

Mahindra Quanto 4x4 7

Mahindra cute little success story the Quanto has been spotted testing in Pune in its 4×4 guise by MotorBash. Though there aren’t any explicit badges on the tail or fenders, the 4WD on the wheel hubcaps are giveaway enough.

The Quanto 4×4 is also rumoured to be powered by the 2.2 L mHawk engine as opposed to the turbocharged 1.5L three cylinder mill that does duty in the 2 wheel drive Quanto.

Powered by the bigger mill the Quanto will lose its excise duty benefits and be a tad more expensive, but the thought of such a compact spunky SUV of decent offroading is simply delicious! With the promise the bigger engine and 4×4 box holds for the enthusiasts, we wonder if they should’ve designed it to look better though.

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W04 Unveiled at Jerez : Lewis Hamilton 05

The closest we’ve seen Lewis do anything related to music is belting out snippets of random tunes while doing the hot lap at the Top Gear test track, twice. If this report from Eurosport has substance to it, then Lewis Hamilton might after all turn out to be a bigger than Pussycat Dolls singing sensation!

“He sounds better than certain singers. He’s a proper singer. It’s a breath of fresh air. He’s got a smooth vocal,. I hope (he does release them) because it’s actually crazy. Right now he’s just recording. He’s a perfectionist. He doesn’t want to rush. If it doesn’t sound right, he’ll record it again.” said Angel, singer/songwriter/producer who has worked with Nicole Scherzinger previously.

“It’s a real diversity. He’s got rap — “dirty south” kind of tunes, some massive pop records and soul records. We’re doing all types of genres. We’ve written about 12 songs so far.” Angel added.

It seems Hamilton was recommended Angel and they have been recording for a while now. We wouldn’t be surprised if this Hamilton’s way of chilling out and if he does have any intention of dabbling in the music industry, it isn’t going to be anytime soon.

There’s one thing set in stone though. The Lewis Hamilton hate brigade is going to go up in arms about Lewis dissing the sport that is Formula 1 by recording ‘pop’ songs and the Lewis Hamilton love brigade is going to line up outside music stores waiting for an album that isn’t even complete. The man can definitely stir up extreme emotions in people.

Subaru unveiled the WRX Concept to a stunned audience at the New York Motor Show and it is reported that those in attendance are yet to recover from the aggressive, intimidating lines of the WRX! Details on the mechanical parts of the athletic WRX were sparse as this was a design study. The internet has been abuzz with ‘I want’ posts. The Subaru WRX Concept has definitely captured the attention of the enthusiast.

The front of the Subaru WRX Concept is dominated by the hexagonal grille and the three dimensional honeycomb mesh in it. The hawk eye headlights are inspired by the new Subaru family design language. The iconic Subaru hood scoop retains its place. Large air intakes in the front bumper, air ducts for the exiting air in the front fender all hint at a turbocharged engine, as is Subaru tradition.

Subaru says this is WRX is sleeker and lower than anything before and we agree.

The side profile is impressive again thanks to the sharp shoulder line that cuts starts from the front wheelarch and runs to the rear. The muscular wheelarches emphasize Subaru’s phenomenal All Wheel Drive capability ( their words, not ours!).

Hyundai I10 Testing 01

Hyundai’s CEO & MD Bo Shin Seo in an interview to TOI has mentioned that the South Korean automaker has a “very strong line up” and “HMI will launch a small SUV soon. The SUV will come earlier, followed by an MPV”, he added.

TOI reports that last year diesels accounted for 28% of Hyundai’s sales reassuring the company of its decision to invest $300 million in a flexible engine plant. “We have invested $300 million in a new diesel-gasoline flexible plant which has a 3,00,000-unit capacity. The flexi assembly line future-proofs us from any changes in the government’s fuel policy, while at the same time it protects us from currency fluctuation since we no longer import diesel engines,” he said.

Mr. Seo also pointed out that Hyundai will not target the segment below that of Eon. He also spoke of a new hatchback from the brand being tested to be slotted between the i10 and the i20. This of course, is the next generation i10 also known as the Brilliant in some markets.

We were just as baffled as you were when the LaFerrari was unveiled. As the Ed pointed out, it literally means ‘The Ferrari’. Why pass up an opportunity for an iconic name befitting a 963 horsepower monster with the highest order excellence of Ferrari technology and craftsmanship poured into it? Well, turns out this was precisely the reason why the LaFerrari was called so. “We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordinary car which encompasses advanced solutions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique, unparalleled engineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.”
LaFerrari 06

As with most modern hypercars, the design team led by Flavio Manzoni worked in close synergy with the engineers to design the LaFerrari. For a design that lays as much emphasis on function as it does on form, it is simply stunning. Retaining the DNA of the current family of Ferrari’s the LaFerrari has a sharp downward sloping nose with a low bonnet emphasizing the muscular wheel arches. Ferrari says this is inspired by the late 1960s Ferraris. The LaFerrari is powered by a 6262cc V12 that makes around 800 horsepower with a rev limit of 9250 rpm! It also features a very high 13.5:1 compression ratio and a high specific output equal to 128 CV per litre.

LaFerrari 08

The engine is coupled with a 120 Kw (163 CV/HP) electric motor, which results in the magic number – 963 horsepower. This hybrid system is what Ferrari calls the HY-KERS which also benefits from the regenerative braking courtesy of the KERS tech from Formula 1. The total torque generated is in excess of 900 Nm with the electric motors providing for torque at the lower revs and the V12 optimized to deliver the best performance at the higher revs. The LaFerrari has not one, but two electric motors developed with Magneti Marelli. One motor powers the driven wheels exclusively. The batteries which weight at 60 kgs are charged by regenerative braking as well as the excess torque from the combustion engine. The electric motor delivers powers to the driven wheels through the dual clutch gearbox.

LaFerrari 10

The LaFerrari benefits from Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 wind tunnel. The LaFerrari boasts a slipper drag coefficient of 3 with additional downforce being generated when required by the diffusers, guide vanes up front and the spoiler and diffuser at the rear. These are what comprise the ‘active aerodynamics’ in the LaFerrari as they are activated only when the additional downforce is required. Ferrari’s proprietary algorithms keep all the systems under rein and respond to driver inputs instantaneously. Even the braking system of the LaFerrari is connected to these dynamic control systems. New lightweight callipers were designed to guarantee correct cooling and carbon-ceramic material (CCM) discs featuring a new composition provide for the stopping power.

The engineers at Ferrari wanted to achieve ideal weight distribution (59:41 with a rear bias) and a compact wheelbase despite the extra bulk of the hybrid system. A lot of time went in to bringing the components between the car’s front and rear axle and as close as possible to the floor. This meant Ferrari had to abandon adjustable seats in favour of a fixed seat tailored to the driver and made the pedal box adjustable. The LaFerrari’s chassis features no less than four different types of carbon-fibre, all hand-laminated and autoclave-cured in the racing department using the same design and production methods as the F138 Formula 1 car. This enabled Ferrari to integrate various components into a single one, for example the battery compartment was integrated into the chassis to improve torsional rigidity (+27%) and beam stiffness (+22%) whilst cutting weight.

With mind boggling performance figures of 0-100 km/h in less than 3 seconds and 0-200 km/h in under 7 seconds, a lap time at Fiorano of under 1 minute 20 seconds – a whole 5 seconds faster than the Enzo and over 3 seconds faster than the F12berlinetta and a production run limited to 499 numbers, the LaFerrari will be one of the most sought after prancing horses in the brand’s history. Add to that the fact that this is also the fastest road car in Maranello’s long history.

Nico Rosberg Lewis Hamilton Mercedes Petronas Amg F1 01

Nico Rosberg was asked to hold back to secure a 3-4 finish for the Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team at the 2013 Malaysian GP. Though he wasn’t happy about he followed team orders and allowed Hamilton to get on the podium, a place which Hamilton agrees Nico deserved.

“Imagine the two Red Bulls crashing; you look like an idiot and he looks like an idiot. So we took a conservative approach. Because of where we were last year, it was a good call.” said Toto to AUTOSPORT.

“As a racing driver, deep inside him [Rosberg] is not happy about it,but he understands why that call was made. We are all grown ups and they are grown up. They are professional sportsmen and they understand that sometimes there can be a certain controversy in a certain situation.”

“We have sorted it out after the race, Ross and I sat down with the drivers and there is no issue any more, I am really happy that we don’t have this problem; that we have two team-mates who have a good relationship with each other; that we have a driver like Nico who has accepted a call that was not satisfying for him.

“We have no controversy in the team.” he said in finality.
