Hexis Racing MP4-12C GT3 at the first round of the FIA GT1 World Championships, Nogaro, France

The two Hexis McLaren MP4-12C GT3s got into Q2, but problems with the starter on Stef Dusseldorp/Fred Makowiecki’s car halted any progress. In the meantime, Alvaro Parente qualified eight position for Q3, which gave confidence to the team’s engineers.

The two cars were in eighth and fourteenth places on the grid for the Qualifying race, the first of the season, but an incident on a wet formation lap meant only car no. 2 driven by the Gregoire Demoustier/Alvaro Parente duo started the 60-minute event. Parente thrilled the Hexis fans with a series of overtaking manoeuvres and got up to third place before handing over to Demoustier. The team carried out the best pit stop of the whole field and the young Frenchman ( Demoustier) rejoined in second place. He avoided all the pitfalls of a drying track, and took the flag in 4th place, just 7 seconds behind the winning Audi.

Lady luck wasn’t smiling over the Hexis Racing team the next day for the Championship race. Frédéric Makowiecki started from seventeenth place and pulled back eight places in a single lap. Unfortunately, his meteoric comeback ended prematurely on lap 3 following an electrical issue. Demoustier hung on to his place in the first eight. During the driver and tyre change an electrical glitch caused a red alert for the engine forcing the team to retire the remaining 12C GT3.

Philippe Dumas, the Hexis team manager, sums up the first meeting of the season: “First of all, I’d like to say how pleasant it was to come back to Nogaro, ten years after our debut here. The fans and the connoisseurs who turned up for our home race showed that they like our team and that they appreciate what we’ve accomplished. For me it’s a big encouragement and gives us even more determination to fight to defend our world title. We’ve had a challenging week requiring with a lot of work, but overall I believe that we’re even stronger as a team than in 2011. We’ve got the skills and the organisation to win with the McLarens. We’re 200 percent concentrated on this championship and the manufacturer we’re representing. What happened to us at Nogaro isn’t the end of the world, but we plan to work hard hand-in-hand with our English partners to solve the technical problems.”

The next round is Zolder, Belgium on 20-22 April. Here’s hoping the MP4-12C GT3 lives up to the expectations fans have for McLaren’s debut in the FIA GT1 World Championship.

The Cayenne GTS has been built to slot bang in the middle of the Cayenne S and the Cayenne Turbo. It’s front end is borrowed from the Cayenne Turbo. The frames and trims are in high globss black, side skirts are more pronounced, and the wheel arches are wider. The GTS also gets a distinctive roof spoiler with a twin wing profile. Cayenne GTS features a leather interior with Alcantara elements as standard. The standard front sports seats have eight adjustment options.

Yamaha Factory Racing rider Jorge Lorenzo claimed a sensational victory on Sunday under the dramatic floodlights of the Losail circuit, finally claiming his first premier class (MotoGP) Grand Prix of Qatar win. Lorenzo took the lead from the start and held off rival Casey Stoner for the first few laps before conceding the lead and tucking into second. With seven laps to go he started to close the distance as Stoner’s pace dropped off, holding off a determined Dani Pedrosa on his tail to take the lead. Lorenzo crossed the line 0.852 seconds ahead of Pedrosa, taking the lead in the 2012 Championship standings with 25 points.

Ben Spies first race of the season proved to be a tough one for the Texan, battling major chatter issues from the start of the race. Although unable to hold a competitive pace Spies kept his cool and hung on to take 11th at the line and landed five Championship points in the process.

Jorge Lorenzo, 1st
“What an amazing race! I put everything I have, all my energy into the track, this victory is because I never gave up, kept pushing and trying. Casey was very strong at the beginning and opened a gap. Fortunately for us he struggled at the end and dropped his pace where I could keep mine so I managed to pass him. I am very grateful to Yamaha because they have made a big step this winter on the YZR-M1.”

Ben Spies, 11th
“A tough race but sometimes that’s just the way it goes. I tested my airbag twice this weekend; good to know it works well! We’ll go back to Jerez now and hopefully have the bike issue sorted. It was good that Jorge won, we can see the Yamaha is going well, we just had a big problem with chatter so we have to work out what it was.”

Wilco Zeelenberg, Team Manager
“What can I say, what a great victory! A typical Lorenzo win, he’s won a few races like that, he never gives up. Because of this he was able to win. Of course Casey was struggling a bit with his hand issue but I don’t think we had the perfect set up either. Jorge pushed really hard the last few laps, taking a lot of risks but that’s what it takes in this class to win. He really deserved it. The team also deserve thanks as they worked very hard all weekend for this result.”

Massimo Meregalli, Team Director
“The chatter suddenly appeared on Ben’s bike in warm up and we couldn’t solve it before the race. We’re not sure why it was yet but the engineers will work on it and we will try to ensure we have the problem solved by Jerez. An impressive victory for Jorge, I don’t have the right words to say how impressive. I think he was superior all weekend, now we go to Spain with a lot of optimism; there was no better way for him to start the season. Fantastic to also see both Cal and Andrea doing so well, it says a lot about the YZR-M1’s performance.

Stoner stole the pole from Lorenzo right from the third lap and it looked like he would finish the race first, well almost, when viewers were treated to the kind of excitement only two wheeled racing can provide, when Stoner was passed by Lorenzo with just four laps to the finish and then again by teammate Pedrosa, leaving Stoner to finish third. This is Stoner’s 16th consecutive podium.

Dani Pedrosa jumped from 7th to 2nd by the first corner but had to give up his position to Lorenzo later. Pedrosa stuck to Lorenzo’s tail for a major part of the race and did manage to overtake him for a bit towards the end but lost the gained position almost immediately.

DANI PEDROSA 2nd

“I’m very happy with this result because we have been able to turn around all the problems we had during the weekend. After a good pre season we got here and everything went wrong: I had flu and a fever, I crashed on Friday, then the qualifying practice was a disaster… So, it’s very good to leave here with this podium, even if I feel little bit sad because I thought I could win this race, I had it in my hands for a while. The team did a fantastic job and we saw things very different after warm up; then I managed a perfect start which was a key moment in the race, and I was able to stay with Casey and Jorge. In the end, with 4 laps to go I tried to take the lead, but Lorenzo was cleverer than me this time and choose a better strategy. I passed him but he overtook me immediately and also Casey, then I was behind Casey for 1 lap and lost contact with Jorge. Anyway, it’s a good start to the season and we will try to do better in Jerez”.

CASEY STONER 3rd

“It wasn’t really the way we wanted to finish the race weekend here, after FP3 and Qualifying it was always going to be a tough race for us but in the end it came in the wrong areas. The bike was working well for us, I definitely had the package and the pace to lead the field which was really positive. However, I suffered from really bad arm pump. After three or four laps I felt it but it gradually got worse, I tried to pull a little gap from Jorge and Dani and put in the minimal effort possible to retain the gap and try and win, but as the race continued it got worse and worse and eventually the muscles had nothing more to give. I couldn’t hold onto the handle bars properly and it made things really difficult so it was a disappointing race for this reason, but for many other technical reasons it was very promising”.

At the opening round of the MotoGP season, the Ducati Team earned a sixth-place finish with Nicky Hayden and tenth place with Valentino Rossi. The American didn’t get a great start, but his performance improved steadily as the laps ticked down, and he came out on top of a hard-fought battle with Alvaro Bautista, Stefan Bradl and Hector Barbera to finish in sixth place.

Having started from the twelfth spot on the grid after a difficult qualifying session, Valentino Rossi dealt with a number of problems but worked hard the entire race, eventually turning decent lap times.

The racing department in Bologna and the Ducati Team engineers will continue to develop the GP12 in an effort to make progress for Jerez.

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 6th

“I felt we had the potential to run with Dovizioso and Crutchlow, but considering my injuries and limited testing over the winter, I guess sixth is pretty good. I lost some positions at the beginning because I got hung up behind Spies and wasn’t very good on the brakes, but as the race went on, I managed my tyre well and got stronger. That group I was in was fighting hard, and I was happy to bring Bradl back and come out on top of that battle. We put some good points on the board, got some data and learned a lot from riding with other people. I’m excited for the season. I think if we improve some things, we have the potential to put up some good results. I’d like to thank the team, the sponsors and everybody back at Ducati for all their work, because we’ve clearly taken a step forward since last year.”

“Unfortunately, I lost a lot of time in the beginning because when I had new tyres with good grip, the rear pushed a lot, making it very difficult under braking. Then Barbera pushed me off the track and I lost five or six seconds. Otherwise, I could have stayed with that group. As the tyre became used and began to slide, I started to ride a bit better and to do better times, to the point that I matched my best time on the last lap. By that point though, it didn’t count for much.”

Vittoriano Guareschi (Team Manager)

“It was a challenging weekend for our team, but we can also look at some positive aspects as we continue to focus on working with the still-young GP12. Valentino had a difficult qualifying session, and he had problems in the race, particularly in the early laps with fresh tyres. We must learn how to solve this, because in the end he posted some good times. Nicky felt more comfortable during practice, and today he rode with great determination, scrapping with Bautista, Bradl and Barbera to win the hard fight for sixth place. We’ll compare the data and the information we gathered from both riders in order to improve our bike for Jerez.”

2013 SRT Viper GTS revealed at the New York International Auto Show on April 4, 2012

“After a gut-wrenching period of uncertainty, the Street and Racing Technology brand team is extremely proud that our hand-built in Detroit, flagship supercar is back and ready to take on the performance car world,” said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO – Street and Racing Technology Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC.

“Beyond being the flagship for the new SRT brand, the launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die. Willed to live on by a very special group of performance enthusiasts inside the company and across Viper Nation, this SRT team under our new leadership was challenged to not just continue the legendary Viper, but to create a world-class supercar that would showcase the very best we have to offer.”

Whew. Lucky us. Unlike the other scares by the media, this one almost happened. Thanks to Gilles and his team, the Viper lives on.

With the two variants of the SRT Viper and SRT Viper GTS priced differently, Chrysler is playing it safe by having offerings for both the traditional core Viper customer and for the new customer who wants the same performance in a package with more technology and premium creature comforts.

Design

All-new carbon-fiber hood, roof, decklid and aluminum door panels are firsts for SRT Viper models resulting in significant weight reduction, improved high-speed stability and a slippery .364 drag coefficient. The forward-hinged hood carries the redesigned “Stryker” Viper badge.

Low-stance and the extreme cab rearward proportions have been maintained and fender “gills” in addition to making the beast look good, also extract heat from the engine. The “double-bubble” roof configuration maximizes headroom for the driver and passenger while maintaining a low frontal area. SRT says there is enough headroom for the occupants to wear helmets during track days and the like..

Dual-function, bi-xenon projector headlamps are tightly packaged with white light-emitting diode (LED) daytime running lamps and LED turn signals in a sinister “snake eye” configuration. Functional “blisters” incorporated into the 70 mm projector headlamp lenses create a three-dimensional view that gives Viper a distinctive glare.

The taillamps are LED and have integrated blinkerds. Snakeskin texture in the lens carries the surface work seen in the gills and hood textures. Each lamp carries 50 LEDs that provide a unified “crystallized” illumination effect.

SRT Viper gets the five-spoke, forged-aluminum “Rattler” wheel in either fully polished (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black finishes.

2013 SRT Viper GTS split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design

SRT Viper GTS has a split six-spoke forged-aluminum “Venom” wheel design with three available finishes, including polished face with graphite-painted pockets (standard), fully painted Hyper Black or fully painted low-gloss black.

Also on offer are the SRT Track Package wheels are ultra-lightweight, track-ready wheels in Hyper Black or matte black finishes.

Powertrain

The 2013 SRT Viper is powered by a hand-assembled 8.4-liter all-aluminum, V-10 overhead-valve engine. Improvements for 2013 include a new, ultra-high flow and lightweight composite intake manifold, high-strength forged pistons, sodium-filled exhaust valves, new catalysts to reduce back pressure and an aluminum flywheel that reduces reciprocating losses. More than 11 kilograms have been lost in the process. The SRT-engineered V-10 Viper is said to be good for 640 horsepower and 600 lb.-ft. of torque – the most torque of any naturally aspirated engine in the world.

2013 SRT Viper GTS all-aluminum, mid-engine 8.4-liter V-10 : 640 horsepower and 600 lb-ft of torque

The Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission has been improved with a shorter throw shifter, closer gear ratios and a final drive ratio that has been shortened to 3.55 from 3.07. The 2013 Viper models will be more engaging to drive and top speed is now achieved through 6th gear with maximum engine speed (redline) at 6,200 rpm.

Chassis

A stiffer structure provides 50 percent more torsional rigidity in the chassis of the 2013 SRT Viper. Major updates include the addition of a new aluminum “X” brace under the hood that ties the suspension pickup points to the magnesium cowl super casting and contributes to improved torsional rigidity and stiffness. A new aluminum impact beam at the front of the car contributes to overall mass savings and improved weight distribution while providing excellent crashworthiness.

2013 SRT Viper GTS Engine bay

Structurally, many areas of the chassis were reworked to take advantage of new materials, reduce thickness in some areas and reshape components for more structural rigidity in others. The result is an overall weight savings of approximately 45 kilograms.

At the rear, the suspension has been re-engineered with the toe link moved forward of the axle for better tow control and dynamic stability.

A new, driver selectable two-mode suspension system, featuring Bilstein DampTronic Select shock absorbers with both street and track settings, is standard on GTS models.

For 2013, SRT Viper models ride on standard Pirelli P Zero, Z-rated tires with substantially improved overall performance, cold weather performance, enhanced overall grip and steering response on a variety of road surfaces while also broadening the performance envelope. An optional SRT Track Package features Pirelli P Zero Corsa, “soft”-tuned, “racing-type” compound tires that improve handling and precision further on the road or the race track.

For the first time, standard safety technologies such as electronic stability control and traction control help to maximize traction performance at virtually any speed and driving environment.

Four-piston Brembo brakes with fixed-aluminum calipers, and vented rotors with a diameter of 355 mm by 32 mm, are used at all four corners. Brake calipers are forged and weight optimized by fully machining all surfaces. The calipers are among the stiffest available with distortion from heat nearly eliminated even under the most demanding braking conditions.

All 2013 Viper models will come with a steering-wheel-mounted launch control switch, allowing for optimal acceleration from standing starts. Ah, American muscle.

Interior

2013 SRT Viper GTS Interior 01

SRT is moving up the game by ensuring the interior of the Viper is as premium as its performance is. For the first time, all major interior surfaces are sewn and wrapped with additional padding applied in comfort areas. On the Viper GTS model, all surfaces are fully leather skinned, and standard accent colors are applied to the seats, doors, center console and stitching.

The cluster bezel, HVAC outlets, window switch bezels, shifter base, park brake bezel and the integrated passenger grab handle on the center console are all triple-paint-finished with Gun Metal appliqués.

Standard high-performance racing seats from Sabelt feature a lightweight Kevlar/fiberglass shell created by a state-of-the-art resin transfer molding technology for mass reduction and long-term durability. Thigh support is improved and the deep side bolsters should help keep the occupants in place when the V10 does it job.

For the first time, seat height can be adjusted by up to 40 mm – manually on the SRT model and power controlled on the GTS.

CIV 2012 Imola : Podium For Ricardo Moretti, Mahindra Racing

Ricardo Moretti rode the GP125 in a damp track to claim victory in the 125GP class of the Italian Championship at Imola’s AutodromoEnzo e Dino Ferrari. This is the second consecutive win for Moretti after his stunning performance at Mugello on the 25th of March.

Indian rider Sarath Kumar, finished 7th, gaining 9 points. Moretti stands at the top of the table with 50 points.

CIV 2012 Imola : Sarath Kumar, Mahindra Racing

Riccardo Moretti: “It’s been a really tough race. My bike improved a lot compared to yesterday’s qualifying, but we were not still 100% with the set-up. My technicians were still impressive to allow me to win the second race in a row in the Italian Championship.

I was involved in some hard fight straight after the start with some Moto3 riders and it’s been a good race, although the track conditions have made it all harder. I’m happy for the win and I want to thank Mahindra and all my team.”

CIV 2012 Imola : Ricardo Moretti, Mahindra Racing

Sarath Kumar :

It is a great feel of pride and satisfaction for having scored my first points in an international championship. I am thankful to all the encouragement and support given to me by my team, my manager and the Mahindra Group.

Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra: We are ecstaic about our second consecutive win in the Italian Championship today.RiccardoMoretti has shown tremendous skill and expertise in negotiating the circuit under damp conditions. We are particularly proud of our fellow Indian Sarath Kumar for scoring his first ever International points.

Meanwhile, things aren’t so rosy in the Moto3 races. British racer Danny Webb took his brand-new Mahindra MGP3O to a solid finish in its grand prix debut, after overnight adjustments found a significant speed improvement. The 21-year-old rider had qualified 25th, but rode through from a bad start to finish 18th after overnight work by the Mahindra team showed yet more progress for the single-cylinder 250cc machine.

Marcel Schrötter had a good start from 23rd on the grid and gained positions and was in 18th by lap four. Then he ran into gear-shifting problems, and after five of the 18 laps of the 5.380 km Losail desert circuit, he pitted to retire.

2012 MotoGP : Jorge Lorenzo ,Yamaha Motor Racing Qatar GP Race Victory 01

Jorge Lorenzo (Yamaha Factory Racing Team) claimed his first MotoGP victory at this track, the Losail International Circuit today when he finished first in the Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar. Lorenzo’s list of achievements at this track previously includes a 125cc class victory in 2004 followed later by two victories in the 250cc class. Having stuck to Stoner’s tail for a major part of the race, Lorenzo was smooth throughout the race conserving his tyres and finally managing to pull a move on Stoner. Pedrosa, who had stuck to Lorenzo’s tail for the better part of the race did manage to move past Lorenzo, but only for a couple of turns and finished second. Stoner with the ‘chattering’ front end, had to give in to Lorenzo and Pedrosa towards the final few laps of the race and be content with the third place on the podium. This gives Repsol Honda Team a 2nd and 3rd and has them on the top of the constructor’s title with 25 points. Yamaha follows with 20 and Ducati with 15.

Losail International Circuit Qatar Track Map

Cal Crutchlow, (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) having landed a surprise 3rd position in qualifying fought long and hard with team mate Dovizioso to finish 4th. Dovizioso, followed Crutchlow across the finish line taking 5th position.

Stefan Bradl, LCR Honda MotoGP team, qualifying 9th rode steady and fought off Hector Barbara, Alvaro Bautista and Nicky Hayden for a while and hovered a while in the 6th and 7th positions. Hector Barbara riding for the Pramac Ducati Team went wide off the track and lost places to the trio. Hayden finished 6th, Bautista 7th, Bradl 8th and Barbara with the expensive mistake, finished 9th.

Ben Spies was the sad surprise of the day, finishing 11th behind Rossi after having qualified 4th yesterday! Rossi and Spies both seem to have had issues with the bike, which of course would be no consolation for these competitive gentlemen.

Colin Edwards riding the BMW powered Suter CRT for the NGM Foward Mobile Racing team took 12th and Rand De Puniet riding the ART GP12 for Power Electronics Aspar took 13th.

Karel Abraham riding the satellite Ducati for Cardion AB Motoracing ( Team Manager being Karel Abraham Sr. ) pulled out after 15 laps stating technical issues. Danilo Petrucci with the Came IODARacing pulled out after 7 laps, possibly due to tyre issues.

The opening round, Commercialbank Grand Prix of Qatar was entertaining, with the the trio up front fighting for the podium, the Yamaha Tech 3 rider slugging it out and then the four riders following up with their own battle for 6th position! Here’s crossing our fingers for the excitement to continue throughout the season!

With the switch to 1000cc bikes months of development, testing and hard work have gone into the preparing the RC213V for this season. Having swept the rider, team and constructor titles in 2011, Honda has to work extra hard to impress its fans.

Stoner’s record in Losail circuit is impressive, with 4 pole positions and 4 wins out of six in the MotoGP class.

The Repsol Honda Team finished the second day of practice at Losail circuit with Casey Stoner in third position and Dani Pedrosa fifth both of them riding the RC213V.

Stoner set the fastest time in FP2 and was leading in FP3 until others put on a new soft rear to take the fastest time of the day. Casey improved his lap time by 0.3 in the evening even though he remained on hard tyres until the end, not unlike what Rossi was doing.

Dani Pedrosa crashed in FP2, without sustaining any injury, and was only able to use one bike in the second session of the evening, whilst his mechanics worked hard to build up the damaged machine. Nevertheless, Dani also improved his lap time by half a second from one session to the other.

“Today has been pretty good for us in general, we has some issues in the first two sessions but we’ve fixed them slightly in last one which is definitely positive. We’ve been able to turn down the electronics a lot more and now I have more feeling and connection with the rear tyre which gave me a lot more confidence. This allowed me to do some good lap times with some pretty old tyres. A few people got in our way throughout the session so we were unable to show what we were really capable of, but we know how we feel and we’re confident for qualifying tomorrow”.

“The track tonight wasn’t so bad, I expected the conditions to be much worse but in general it was ok. We started this evening with huge chatter issues and I was a little afraid we couldn’t fix this but after a few more exits we managed to reduce it to a more comfortable level. This is a positive point for the weekend but with such a short session and then nothing until tomorrow it’s slightly strange. It was an ok start tonight, we finished quickest which is good but we’ll have to wait until tomorrow for some real track time and with the conditions a little better and see where we are”.

I had some problems with the electronics and I couldn’t ride at a hundred percent, especially in the exits of the corners where we have more issues. Let’s hope the mechanics can find a solution and we can have a good qualifying session tomorrow. The crash in the first session was totally unexpected; it was on my first lap of the second exit and I was not pushing at all. But I escaped unhurt and do it’s ok”.

“There are some corners where we are struggling a lot with the chattering, especially in the area where you slide more, but it’s like this and we will need to adapt the best we can. On my first exit I had an issue with the tyres and I had to stop in the garage; I felt a vibration in the wheels, so we decided to change both tyres. I lost some time there and at the end of the practice I went wide twice. Anyway, it’s been good to go out there and get the feeling back at this track after a long time without riding here. Tomorrow, with two practices sessions, we will start working more with the chassis and electronics to improve and prepare for the race”.
