Bmw Zagato Coupe 01

Bmw Concept 01

We give up. We have done our research and crawled the deep ends of the internet with no avail. There’s no whispers in the dark alleys, no proclamations on forums! There’s simply no information on this concept.

UPDATE Andrea Zagato and Adrian van Hooydonk will unveil the BMW Zagato Coupé at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Built in many hours of superior hand-craftsmanship, the one-off model fuses the design DNA of the famous Milanese coachbuilder Zagato and BMW into a fresh and distinctive whole.

While there have been speculations that this is a BMW Zagato collaboration, we doubt it. The Z just doesn’t look the same as it does on the Zagato badges.

The concept in all probability will be unveiled at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este where the BMW Group Cocktail party kicks off at 19.30

The BMW Design page has posted this image to their wall and stated that the unveiling will happen at 8pm.

The Z is more in tune with the Z in BMW’s Z vehicles. The design is far too different from the Z4, so we wonder if this could be something else, what with BMW stepping into crevices between 3 and 5 Series vehicles to come up with the 4 Series and so on.

Romain Groesjean Lotus Renault E20 at Monaco, Practice

As with each race, Lotus F1 Team sent us a preview to the Monaco track. Let’s take a look at the numbers before we get down to talk tech.

The highest g-force experienced is 3.5 for a duration of 3 seconds at T3. 20% of the lap is spent braking whereas 44.5% of lap is dispensed with while on full throttle. Top speed will be a not so shocking 285 kph with highest apex speed being 269 kph. Lowest apex speed is 50 kph at at T6. In a circuit that barely lets you tap the maximum power of the engine, the longest full throttle burst is for 500m through the tunnel.

Here are the tech details on how the various components of the Lotus Renault E20 will be optimized for the Grand Prix de Monaco.

1. REAR WING
We will have a Monaco-specific ‘big’ rear wing to gain more downforce at the slower overall speeds we see here.

2. BRAKES
Brakes are not a big concern. It’s only low speed so you’re not braking significantly as you would from a long straight into a first gear corner, and it’s also a shorter race than most, so wear is not an issue. You need to monitor temperature because there aren’t high speed sections to cool down the brakes and the relentless stop / start nature can compound heat generation.

3. SUSPENSION
Monaco has the greatest undulations relative to any other circuit, so you need a soft car which allows the tyres to be on the tarmac as much as possible. This means softer roll bars and springs, with the aim of maximising mechanical grip without losing too much aerodynamic grip.

4. TYRES
This will be the first time we see Pirelli’s red-marked supersoft tyre at a race. We’ll also run the soft compound. Tyre wear is very low here, due to the smooth track surface and low speed layout.

5. FRONT WING
Front downforce is very important here and we run maximum front wing with more balance to the front because of the understeer inducing characteristics of the circuit.

6. ENGINE
You need an engine with very good response. Rather than ultimate power being the goal; drivability is king. You’ll never go slower with more power, but it’s the least power sensitive circuit of the year. The engine also spends a relatively short amount of time at full throttle so the challenge is to deliver torque through the lower rev limits of the engine. However, as Monaco is a bumpy street track, the engine needs a good limiter setting so it is capable of digesting all the bumps. Fuel consumption also needs to be worked out accurately as the track gets quicker and quicker over the week-end.

Monaco Circuit – An Engineers View : Alan Permane, Director Trackside Operations

TURN 1
The first corner is very tight and has been the scene of many incidents over the years. The drivers need to keep their wits about them to avoid any drama.

TURNS 4 + 5
The bumpy track between turns four and five means that the drivers need to modify their line to avoid unsettling their car unduly.

TURN 6
The slowest corner on the circuit, and of the entire season. Suspension and steering mods have to be made to the car just to make it through this turn.

TURN 9
Taken flat out, the tunnel is the fastest part of the track. The contrast of natural, artificial, then natural light is a big challenge for the drivers. Track temperature is also different from the rest of the circuit.

TURN 10
Exiting the tunnel into the chicane is the scene of many out-braking manoeuvres. An opportunity to pressurise the car ahead, but a place where mistakes are often seen.

TURN 14
The Swimming Pool, ‘La Piscine’, is entered very quickly, before braking hard for turn 15.

TURN 18
Turn 18, La Rascasse, is the second slowest part of the circuit with the cars running very close to the inside wall.

START/FINISH STRAIGHT
A good exit is essential leading on to the start finish straight. High traction demands here.

McLaren MP4-12C in Abu Dhabi 04

To celebrate the opening of McLaren Abu Dhabi, McLaren Automotive has released a short film entitled “McLaren 12C finds ‘The Perfect Line’ at Yas Marina Circuit”. The video is the latest in a series by the British sports car company to mark its expansion across the globe.

McLaren Automotive Regional Director, Middle East and Africa, Mark Harrison, said: “We wanted to produce this video to highlight our presence across the Middle East and reaffirm our commitment to establishing our brand in the region. The 12C is as comfortable on the road as a premium sedan, yet faster than any competitor car in its segment and this excellent video shows this fact; capturing the beauty of the desert, the emotion of the urban environment and the drama of a world famous Formula 1 circuit – three locations where the 12C is supremely confident.”

Audi S4 Coming To India 01

Audi S4

Autocar India reports that Audi’s S range of cars will soon come to India. Powered by the six cylinder 3.0 TFSI supercharged petrol engine making 333 hp of power and 440 Nm of torque, the S4 claims a fuel consumption of just 8.1 liters of fuel per 100 km (12.34 kpl) . The S4 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.0 seconds laying down the power through the seven-speed S tronic gearbox and quattro permanent all-wheel drive. The sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 20 millimeters (0.79 in), and a high-performance brake system provides powerful deceleration. The wheels are 18 inches in diameter.

Audi S6

The S6 is powered by a four-liter, twin-turbo V8 producing 420 hp and delivering 550 Nm of torque between 1,400 and 5,300 rpm. The innovative cylinder head concept, with the intake side on the outside and the exhaust side on the inside, provides for short gas paths with minimal flow losses for very spontaneous engine response. The two twin-scroll turbochargers ensure you have more than enough torque at low revs.

Audi S6 Coming To India 02

The 4.0 TFSI accelerates the S6 from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and claims average fuel consumption of 9.7 liters per 100 km (10.39 kpl). Cylinder on demand, a newly developed cylinder management system that deactivates four of the eight cylinders under part load, ensure this optimal fuel efficiency. During these phases, Active Noise Control (ANC) largely eliminates intrusive noise by broadcasting a precise antiphase sound to the cabin through the sound system’s speakers. Low-frequency vibrations are eliminated by active engine bearings that use counterpulses to attenuate these vibrations.

Seven-speed S tronic, quattro permanent all-wheel drive system, featuring a self-locking center differential and torque vectoring transfers power from the crank to the tarmac. Available as an option is the sport differential, which actively distributes the power between the rear wheels.

The two new S models come standard with the adaptive air suspension sport. The tautly tuned air suspension with variable damping lowers the body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in). The front disc brakes behind the 19-inch wheels have matt black calipers with S6 logos. Audi offers carbon fiber-ceramic discs as an option. The Audi drive select dynamics system also encompasses the optional sport differential and dynamic steering.

Audi S Vote India

Now that Audi has decided to bring in the S range to India, they have launched a Facebook campaign calling for your support. Find the campaign here and make sure you tag yourself there. We do want to acquaint ourselves with these ‘sporty yet not too sporty to kill your comfort’ range of cars from Audi don’t we?

2012 India Design Mark Awardees

The ‘designed by GK’ Yamaha R15 V2.0, the Honda CBR 250R, the much loved new Maruti Suzuki Swift and the new Wagon R, which has had inputs from the folks at Maruti Suzuki’s design studio in India, have been awarded the India Design Mark 2012.

The India Design Mark is an initiative of the The India Design Council which in turn is affiliated with India’s Ministry of Commerce & Industry and is made up of eminent people in academia, design and industry organizations. Its India Design Mark (I Mark) awards program was organized with the cooperation of the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, organizers of Japan’s Good Design Award (G Mark), and preparations began in 2010.

Adopting the same high standards as its Japanese equivalent, the submissions and judging for the first edition of the India Design Mark Awards was completed recently and the winners announced. Of the 71 applicants, 31 were awarded the I Mark, and the Yamaha YZF-R15 was one of four products from three Japan-based companies to receive the coveted award.

This is the first year of the India Design Mark, and the 2nd edition is to be announced on June 21, 2012.

Commenting on this achievement, Mr. Hiroyuki Suzuki, CEO & MD, India Yamaha Motor said, “I am very pleased with this recognition that our flagship bike YZF-R15 has received. The bike which was introduced in 2008 has witnessed tremendous fan following and the upgraded version launched in 2011 only added more to an already great performing bike. This award not just realizes our efforts but also motivates us to continue creating more new and innovative products.

The India Design Mark should help spread design awareness and promote value of design in the industry and society and prompt more students to take up automotive design as a profession. Maybe then we will have a desi design flaunting the India Design Mark rather than an all Japanese line up. We do not currently have information on whether the XUV5OO was nominated, but considering Mr. Anand Mahindra heads the India Design Council, we would be surprised if it wasn’t nominated. If it was nominated and didn’t get the India Design Mark, then you might as well as put us in cryogenic storage. We aren’t sure if we can recover from the shock.

New Saab 9-5

The most sure bidder for Saab was Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile from China, a company that had tendered an offer of $492 million for SAAB. Autoweek.nl reports ‘Chinese bureaucracy’ and an apparent lack of confidence in the Chinese company’s finances have led to Zhejiang being dropped out of the race ( race? not really) to acquire Saab.

Autoblog reports that Mahindra & Mahindra and Geely/Volvo and another unknown entity are the bidders we know who are after the whole company or select assets.

Tesla Model S Alpha And Roadster 01

Surprise surprise. We have become accustomed to delayed launches, but Tesla turns the tables, two times over with announcements advancing the launch by a month! The Tesla Model S slated for an August launch was advanced to July and now the company has announced that the deliveries to customers are set begin from June 22nd!

“Major Tesla milestone: All crash testing is complete for 5* (max) safety rating. Cars can now be built for sale to public!” tweeted Elon Musk, Tesla Motors CEO and Chief Product Architect.

Tesla Model S On Road 03

Several customers will receive their cars that day at an invitation-only event at the Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. Model S is the first premium sedan designed from the ground up to take full advantage of electric vehicle architecture. A revolutionary powertrain sits under the floorboard of Model S, creating an ultra-low center of gravity. An aluminum body engineered for superior handling and a range of 160, 230, and 300 miles with the 40 kWh, 60 kWh, and 85 kWh batteries respectively, sets the Tesla Model S spart from any other offering on the market. Of course, the range specified is at a speed of 55mph.

Without an internal combustion engine or transmission tunnel, the interior of Model S has more cargo space than any other sedan and includes a second trunk under the hood. Model S seats five adults and two children in optional rear facing seats and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.4 seconds. The interior features a 17” in-dash touchscreen with internet capabilities, allowing for streaming radio, web browsing and navigation.

Model S test-drive events will begin rolling out to select North American cities in July. Tesla will be ramping up production throughout 2012 and plans to deliver 5,000 vehicles by year end. Reservations for the premium electric sedan currently exceed 10,000.

“In 2006 our plan was to build an electric sports car followed by an affordable electric sedan, and reduce our dependence on oil,” said Elon Musk. “Delivering Model S is a key part of that plan and represents Tesla’s transition to a mass-production automaker and the most compelling car company of the 21st century.”
