Honda Freed G Just Selection

Honda Freed G Just Selection

News has emerged from Autocar India, that Honda intends to launch a compact MPV in India, end of 2014. The MPV will have its cross hairs lined up on the Ertiga, another Maruti Suzuki runaway success that has garnered more than 30,000 bookings within a month of its launch.

Honda’s compact MPV codenamed 2NH will be a three-row, seven-seater that will be based on the next-gen Jazz platform. Honda has in its stables a Jazz-based MPV sold as the Freed in other Asian markets. The 2NH in all probability will be the next gen Freed but as Autocar India suggests, a more humble version with a price tag that will help sell it in India.

India and Indonesia will be the main market for Honda’s new MPV. The 2NH is likely to use an updated version of the City’s current 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol motor and a new 1.6L class diesel engine, being developed using Honda’s “Earth Dreams Technology.”  Honda says this engine will be have world’s lightest body, top-of-class acceleration and fuel efficiency!

The Freed is a highly practical vehicle that does not compromise on any of the features we have come to expect from Honda. The Freed gets Vehicle Stability Assist – VSA which contributes to stable driving and reduced driver’s burden, and Hill Start Assist as standard.

There’s also a special edition G Aero Type that features an exclusive chrome-plated grille that gives a dynamic impression, dark chrome headlight garnishes and special front and rear bumpers that make the model appear wider and more aerodynamic. The arrowshot design language indicates that this might be the most probable candidate for the Indian debut, without the frills, if indeed Honda wants to price the 2NH competitively.

Autocar India says the Chevrolet Spark facelift which was recently spotted testing in Pune, will hit showrooms by end of 2012.

Chevrolet Spark Electric Auto Expo 2010

The design changes probably would include the slightly modified front and rear bumpers, new fog lamps, the new split honeycomb grille and new outside rear-view mirrors with integrated indicators.

Autocar India also reports that the styling changes and development would be done by GM’s Technical Centre in Bangalore, but we have our reservations about that considering GM top man Dan Akerson’s global restructuring for the brand includes shutting down the Bangalore R&D facility and downsizing at the Technical Center in Warren.

As any automotive enthusiast would, straight out of school I started plotting not so clever schemes on how to get employed with a German car manufacturer. The chance to get er.. intimate with the Beemers and Mercs was all I wanted at that point. Of course, sense prevailed and I realized the only real way to get ‘really’ intimate with the machines were to either be part of the R&D team or end up as an automotive journalist. While doing my research I stumbled across these ‘apprenticeship’ programmes where the manufacturer takes you under its wings, trains you for a couple of years, hands you certificates attesting your abilities and finds you a job! More than just a fantastic idea, as a group of nine Volkswagen apprentices will attest to.

The apprentices were specializing in fields of automotive mechatronics technicians, automotive painters, interior fitters and process mechanics and were among the best in their respective years. This achievement brought the young talents a very special commission from the Board of Management in 2011: They were asked to design and build a Golf GTI that would be unveiled at the Wörthersee GTI meet in Reifnitz, Austria in May.

The two instructors Björn Schallhorn and Detlef Weiner put the team together from a variety of disciplines: Lisa Batke (19) is in the third year of her apprenticeship as a car mechatronics technician, just like her colleagues Richard Neubert (18) and Martin Schmidt (22). Roman Huck (24) is in the second year of his apprenticeship. Tim Köhler (19) is a second-year apprentice training as a process technician for plastics and rubber technology. Laura Krätz (18) and Christian Wolter (23) are in their third year of training as automotive painters. Charleen Pohle (19) and Sarah Unverzagt (20) are second-year apprentice interior fitters.

Working on the theme “sporty driving” the team began customizing a Golf GTI. Black as the night, with a black-and-red interior, 360 PS (265 kW) TSI engine and a lowered sport suspension, the GTI Black Dynamic makes a lasting impression says VW. This GTI is truly unique with its handmade GTI lettering in the doors and hatch. A 1,800 watt sound system with nine loudspeakers installed in the boot is visible through a plexiglas sheet.

Martin Schmidt (22) who specializes in automotive mechatronics, took care of was the stamping the GTI lettering in a deep-drawing process. “For our team, the GTI Black Dynamic is the high point of our training,” he said. “The amount that we have learned is incredible, and we have developed our own ideas and implemented them in ‘our’ car. Where else do you get an opportunity like that?” he added enthusiastically.

The exterior has also been given the special treatment. A Deep Black Metallic exterior finish underneath flat anthracite film trim makes the car ‘black as night’. The engine has been tuned to make an extra 150 PS, and an oversized exhaust system and the eight-piston brake system complete the list of performance upgrades.

The nine apprentices selected the appropriate parts from the Volkswagen model range, negotiated with suppliers, and performed their own work on the car. The teams says the freedom to experiment with the techniques they have learnt for the very first time is a special experience – particularly as every day brings something new. They found material procurement negotiations a challenge, but as 18-year-old Laura Krätz says: “My knees were shaking during the first phone call with an outside supplier. After that, everything went smoothly.”

“We are proud of the creativity and achievement of our apprentices,” declared Professor Heiko Gintz, who heads vocational training at Wolfsburg. Volkswagen gives its best apprentices an opportunity to extend their knowledge with projects such as the GTI Black Dynamic.

The screwheads were visible under the pane of Plexiglas in the luggage compartment and seemed odd on a car that was brimming with elegance and flair. So the blunt screw heads were unscrewed and polished. When asked why they were paying such great attention to detail, they laughed and said: “Our Golf GTI is a customized business card for Volkswagen, so it has to be 100% perfect!”

Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Brand, with responsibility for ‘Development’ presents the Volkswagen study Golf GTI Black Dynamic at the 31st GTI Meeting at Wörthersee

The Golf GTI Black Dynamic celebrated its world premiere from 16 to 19 May before roughly 150,000 Volkswagen and custom-car fans at the 31st GTI Festival at Wörthersee in Austria.

The sponsor of the Wörthersee project, Prof. Werner Neubauer, Member of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Board of Management responsible for Components, feels that this kind of project is of key importance during an apprenticeship: “Restyling the Golf GTI means the apprentices have access to all kinds of components from the Volkswagen model range. As a result, the show car symbolizes diversity, innovation and quality ‘made by Volkswagen’.” Volkswagen has been giving its best apprentices the opportunity to expand their technical knowledge by working on special vehicle projects since 2004. Four of these vehicles have been showcased at the Wörthersee meeting. This year’s GTI is the fifth project to be unveiled to tuning fans in Austria.

“This project illustrates how the thorough knowledge, commitment and creativity of our apprentices culminates in a fascinating show car that combines technical extravagance and everyday utility”, Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars Board of Management responsible for Development, said. And this opinion is shared by Bernd Osterloh, Chairman of the Volkswagen General Works Council: “Young people have a passion for cars and are deeply committed when it comes to realizing their own ideas. Our nine apprentices, who as a team have developed a remarkable project, bear witness to that.”

Mark Gillan with Pastor Maldonado as he pays a visit to the factory to meet the team after winning the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona

Mark Gillan with Pastor Maldonado as he pays a visit to the factory to meet the team after winning the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona

Q: Mark, how much satisfaction do you derive from Pastor Maldonado’s victory in the Spanish Grand Prix?

MG: This is a massive result for Williams and of course it is incredibly satisfying, especially given the tribulations of the 2011 season. However, this business is all about continuous improvement and it is important that we continue to deliver.

Q: How would you describe Pastor’s personal performance in qualifying and the race?

MG: Simply stunning – a master class from start to finish. He was strong all weekend, winning the race from pole despite a strong challenge from Alonso. One can’t ask anymore from a driver.

Q: Going into the race weekend, were you confident that the FW34 was a race-winning package?

MG: We were confident that the FW34 was an improved package but of course you never know what upgrades other teams have made for their European upgrade packages.

Mark Gillan , Chief Operations Engineer, Williams F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix 08Q: Pastor did 25 laps on his final set of tyres. How critical was tyre wear during the race?

MG: Managing tyre degradation was the key to the race, so a long final stint was a calculated strategy decision, but we were reasonably confident based on our Friday data that this stint length was possible.

Q: Bruno Senna struggled for pace relative to Pastor. Did he have any particular technical issues?

MG: No there were no technical issues with the car.

Q: After the race a fire broke out in the Williams F1 pit. First, is everyone okay? Second, do you know what caused it? Third, what was the extent of the damage?

MG: I would like to reiterate our thanks to everyone in the paddock who helped the Williams team on Sunday to control the fire. There were a number of people who attended the circuit medical centre, mostly as the result of smoke inhalation. One team member remains in hospital having suffered burns, but he is in a stable condition and in good spirits and has returned to England today for further medical care.

Investigations into the actual cause of the fire are ongoing and are being performed in collaboration with the local authorities and the FIA. The extent of the damage is still being accessed and will not become fully clear until both the cars and equipment have returned to the factory. What is clear is that our garage IT equipment and infrastructure have been badly damaged.

Q: Monaco comes next. What chance Williams F1 can score its first win in the Principality since 2003?

MG: On the back of a win we go to Monaco with high hopes but there is a prodigious amount of work to be done prior to the event to recover from the fire.

Mercedes-Benz 2012 M-Class launched in India

The new M-Class a car we’ve discussed a lot over the past couple of months, has been finally launched in India at a staggering price of Rs. 569 lakhs ex showrooom Delhi. This price is reported to be cheaper by 15% than the last generation model. Mercedes-Benz also celebrated the M-Class launch in India with a special ‘Launch AMG Edition’ which gets AMG body kit, alloys and a high level of equipment and is limited to a 100 units and priced at Rs. 66 Lakhs ex showroom Delhi .

As we had reported earlier the 258 horsepower 3.0L V6 will power the ML 350 CDI. Fuel efficiency hovers around 14.7 kpl in the New European Driving Cycle. Top speed of 224 kph and 0-100 kph in 7.4 seconds figures have been claimed. This engine is the new generation V6 which has been completely reworked to extract more power and surprisingly, better fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz borrows from AMG’s use of the innovative TWAS (twin-wire-arc spraying) technology. This cylinder wall coating technology reduces internal friction in the engine significantly. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 4.3 kg, as there is no longer any need for the grey cast iron cylinder liners that, until now, had to be pressed into the engine block. The benefits are striking: with these measures alone, fuel consumption could be reduced by around 3 percent. Twin turbocharges ( one low pressure, one high pressure) connected in series, ensure the new engines produce more power at lower fuel consumption than predecessors.

Peter Honegg, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India explains: “At the start of this year we had promised to introduce exciting new models into the market. We are proud to present today the New M Class, built to perform with the highest precision and follows the Mercedes-Benz new design language. We are confident that the quality of drive and the luxurious experience it can deliver will be a big hit with the customers and it will be warmly received.”

Blancpain Super Trofeo is Lamborghini’s one make series featuring the Super Trofeo race car, derived from the Lamborghini Gallrado LP 570-4. The race car features Lamborghini’s permanent four-wheel drive, making the Super Trofeo the only one-make, all-wheel drive motorsport series.

The master of the art (or science, if you want it that way) of chassis design, Adrian Newey will be a guest driver for the second round of the 2012 Blancpain Super Trofeo on June 2nd and 3rd 2012. He will share the #1 Lamborghini Gallardo Super Trofeo 570hp V10 race car with Alberto Sabbatini, Editor in Chief of Italian magazine Autosprint.

Behind the calm demeanour of Formula One’s leading technical brain lurks a fierce competitor says Lamborghini. He has competed at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2007, driving a Ferrari F430 GT2 in for team AF Corse and with team mates Ben Aucott and Joe Macari finished 4th in class.

Newey has had his share of mishaps when competing. The Red Bull technical director was competing in a Ginetta G50 race supporting the British Touring Car Championship at the Norfolk circuit driving a Ginetta G50.

Adrian Newey also has destroyed a Ford GT40 at the 2006 Le Mans Legends race and a Jaguar E-Type at the Goodwood Revival Meeting and thankfully walked away from both crashes.

In 2010 he drove his own Red Bull Racing RB5 Formula One race car, a gift from the team, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

In the last round of the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo at Monza, British television presenter and race driver Tiff Needell, filming yet another episode of Fifth Gear drove the #1 Super Trofeo race car and finished third on the first race of the weekend but dropped to sixth before his team-mate Mario Fasanetto took over and regained a place to finish in fifth in race two.

“Super Mario meets Super Tiff!” commented Needell at the end of race one!

Indian Autos Blog reports that their sources have said the Elantra is readying for production sometime in August or September and will hit showrooms by November. The Elantra wears the fluidic clothes better than any of its siblings in the Hyundai stable and if price well should repeat the success that was the Fluidic Verna. The blog also reports that the Elantra will be a CKD model with no localization.

Chevrolet Spark facelift caught testing in Pune

The aging Chevrolet Spark needs a replacement with the affordable car market is growing at a promising pace. This camouflaged Spark was caught testing in Pune, and it would seem that this a mid life, or rather end of life facelift.

While there have been discussions of whether this could be the diesel mill being tested, we doubt it. In all probability this is just another facelift to help the buyer continue to consider the Spark as an option.
