BMW Motorrad 2013 New Model Boxer Engine 01

BMW Motorrad President Stephan Schaller announced at the EICMA in Milan that ‘BMW Motorrad will be presenting a new model with air-cooled ‘boxer’ engine in 2013 as a special way of marking the “90 years of BMW Motorrad” anniversary’.

If the new BMW Boxer Motorcycle is as good in flesh as that in the sketch above, we would sell our souls for one. The silhouette of the motorcycle looks fantastic and seems to be more a cafe racer and a little bit of a bruiser. The shaft drive and boxer engine are obvious in the image. Just about everything else seems perfectly proportioned, we cannot wait to see the curtains off this baby.

BMW Motorrad says the new, distinctive motorcycle to come out next year will be an expression of the genes of 90 years of BMW Motorrad combined with emotional styling and innovative technology to create a new, multifaceted vehicle concept.

The model designation and date of the market launch will be announced at a later stage.

It was in 1923 that the very first BMW – the R 32 – showed the world the basis of every subsequent motorcycle in the BMW Motorrad boxer series over nine decades: an air-cooled 2-cylinder 4-stroker ‘boxer’ engine with longitudinally mounted crankshaft and shaft drive to the rear wheel. All these motorcycles were built with focus one important thing – sheer riding pleasure.

The trio of middleweights from Honda is finally here. Honda celebrates the launch with this video featuring all the three motorcycles. The CBR500R is a sports middleweight twin said to offer ‘excitement, practicality and low ownership and running costs’ with design inspired by the bigger brother, the CBR1000RR. The CBR500F is a naked middleweight twin with design inspired by the CB1000R. The CBR500F is ‘Fun, agile, light, economic to run’ says Honda. While we can see ourselves agreeing with those, we are not sure we can agree that this bland design is inspired by the CB1000R famed for its jaw dropping looks. An adventure sports style again ‘big on fun, all-round ability, economy and practicality’ and with designed inspired by the 1200 Crosstourer we have here, the CBR500X!

MV Agusta RIVALE 800 03

In what seems to a radical departure from the usual curves we’ve associated with MV Agustas the Rivale 800 has enough slashes on its curves yet is still distinctly MV Agusta. While design descriptions from manufacturers usually don’t mean much, MV Agusta’s summary is beautiful. The MV Agusta Rivale 800 with ‘its mix of harmonious and “discordant” lines, tense yet voluptuous, bordering on futuristic whilst retaining synergy with our past’. Just about right.

The Rivale will be shown in the flesh at the 2012 EICMA and be available on sale from the second half of 2013 for 10,990 Euros.

MV Agusta RIVALE 800 02

its mix of harmonious and “discordant” lines, tense yet voluptuous, bordering on futuristic whilst retaining synergy with our past
The three elements – the mudguard, the side panels and the fuel tank present a strong ‘visual shield graphic’ that MV Agusta says will make this machine instantly recognizable as an MV Agusta. The motorcycle from behind the tank onwards is very minimal allowing the rider the freedom to move around. The rear is elegant and ‘sinuous’. The twin trailing-edge floating blade lighting incorporating light guides make the rear very distinct. LED light guides up front help highlight the profile and reduce the visual width of the vehicle. BMW and Audi use a similar technique but to increase the visual width of their cars at the rear by using horizontal lighting elements. The three-dimensional amber turn signals are perfectly integrated into the beautifully designed hand guards. The rear side lights and brake lights are housed in two separate elements, while the direction indicators have been placed on small “dynamic” wings. The retractable rear view mirrors are telescopic to improve and increment rear visibility and integrate into the bike seamlessly.

The dashboard designed specifically for the Rivale 800 has a modern monochrome fully digital, multi-function display. The compact three-cylinder in-line engine in the Rivale 800 features a counter-rotating crankshaft that debuted on the F3 675. It is said that Claudio Castiglioni was inspired by Valentino Rossi’s Yamaha YZR-M1 to use the counter-rotating crankshaft concept in road bikes. The crankshaft which rotates in a counter clockwise direction, opposite to the direction of rotation of wheels helps offset the rotational inertia of the wheels and quickens steering and thus improves handling. Technology MVICS (Motor & Vehicle Integrated Control System) allows for smooth power delivery making it easier to ride the Rivale. Three engine maps and a custom default are available thanks to MVICS. As with other MV Agustas recently, throttle control is fully Ride-By-Wire.

Chassis is signature MV Agusta steel trellis combined with a rear of two aluminium alloy plates, that act as a fulcrum for the sculpted single sided rear swingarm and suspension. The angle of the steering head is half of a degree more open than the Brutale 800. The excursion of the fork and shock have also been increased to provide more comfort. The suspension units are respectively by Marzocchi and Sachs. They are adjustable in spring preload as well as hydraulic compression and rebound damping.

Braking duties are taken care of up front by 320 mm diameter discs, gripped by twin four-piston Brembo radial callipers. The rear is comprised of a 220 mm diameter disc mated to a two-piston calliper.

BMW S 1000 RR Engine : Left

Bimota will be unveiling its latest 4 cylinder motorcycle as a concept at the EICMA in a few days time. Surprisingly, Bimota has opted for the fantastic inline 4 cyinder engine from BMW Motorrad, used in the highly regarded BMW S 1000 RR.

BMW S 1000 RR Engine : Right

By selecting the in-line 4-cylinder power unit of the BMW S 1000 RR, Bimota has gone for the technologically most innovative straight-four engine currently available says BMW Motorrad. The 193 bhp engine is only 59.8 kilograms heavy (light?) with an extremely speed-resistant valve gear with two overhead camshafts and weight-optimised cam followers.

This isn’t the first time BMW Motorrad and Bimota have collaborated. In 1995 the Italian company presented the BB1 Supermono, 376 units of which were made and were powered by the single cylinder engine of the BMW F 650. The BB1 Supermono with the BMW engine had an output of 35 kW (48 bhp), weighed just 167 kilograms and could hit a top speed of 196 km/h.

The last decade has seen mostly Ducati powerplants in Bimotas. The Bimota DB5,DB6,DB10 and the exotic Tesi 3D use the 1078cc engine seen in the Ducati Hypermotard, while the DB7 uses the 1099c mill we’ve seen and loved in the Ducati 1098 and finally the DB9 BRIVIDO and the DB8 SP use the 1198cc L-Twin. Bimota’s quest to bring back the 4 cylinder heritage of the 1970s Bimotas has led the firm to opt out of using the newest twin cylinder Superquadro engine from Ducati, with power figures of 195 HP @ 10,750 rpm in favour of the inline 4 cylinder from BMW Motorrad.

New Ford Fiesta with the 1.0 liter EcoBoost production begins

Ford has announced that volume production of the new Ford Fiesta has begun at its assembly plant in Cologne. The reception to the new styling of the Fiesta has been mixed, but the features on offer and the its legacy of being Europe’s best selling Small car should keep it going strong.

“The new Fiesta has seven powertrain options – both diesel and petrol – that deliver fuel economy of less than 100 grams of CO2 per kilometre,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe.

Ford has sold more than 15 million Fiestas worldwide since the vehicle first went into production in 1976. More than 235,000 have been sold in Europe in the first three quarters of 2012, making it the best-selling small car in the region.

The new Fiesta debuts Ford MyKey in Europe. MyKey is Ford’s technology that enables parents to program restricted driving modes for their kids. The MyKey is different from the Admin Key used by the vehicle owner. Using the MyKey instead of the admin key ensures that important safety features remain on, automatically mutes the audio system volume whenever seat belts are not worn. It also allows you to choose and place speed limits and audio system volume, and can also bring the low-fuel light on sooner.

The European version also get voice-activated in-car connectivity system SYNC, Active City Stop that helps drivers avoid low speed collisions and SYNC Emergency Assistance that directly connects vehicle occupants to local emergency services operators after an accident.

Arriving in dealerships soon, new Fiesta is offered with 1.0-litre EcoBoost – the 2012 ‘International Engine of the Year’. An ECOnetic Technology version powered by a 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engine achieves 87 g/km CO2.

This piece of news lends credence to speculation that the Fiesta in India should be getting the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine after the launch of the long awaited EcoSport. When the new Fiesta does land on Indian shores, it should get the 1.0 litre EcoBoost and we hope at least the Active City Stop, if not MyKey and SYNC. Come to think of it, in our country MyKey would definitely work wonders for the sales figures of the new Ford Fiesta.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster

When a supercar maker states sales figures of around 1300 units in a span of just over a year, you now how successful the brand is. Lamborghini has enjoyed a worldwide success of its Aventador, the much talked about successor to the revered Murcielago. The Raging Bull now presents a roadster version of the Aventador LP 700-4. Unlike other roadsters, the roof here is a two piece affair that doesn’t require your Butler to drive along with you in a Range Rover to carry the removable roof.

The new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster does not require your Butler to carry the removable roof..
Building on its much envied in-house expertise with carbon fibre, the two-piece roof is made entirely from carbon fiber using RTM and Forged Composite technologies. Each part of the roof weights less than 6kg and with the production techniques employed by Lamborghini, assures maximum stiffness. The lightweight roof components are easy to handle, simple to attach and Lamborghini says, can even be stored in the front luggage compartment.

The rear pillar of course had to be re engineered to offer support for the roof and accommodate the protection system against roll overs. The rear pillar also was redesigned to provide the engine compartment with proper ventilation.

The engine hood at the rear is different from that on the Coupe, thanks to the new central ‘spinal column’ straddled by hexagonal windows on either side. Lamborghini says the windows look like ‘hyper-tech armor plates’ and we have to say, it is very Transformers-ish. The windows cool the engine, drain off rain water properly and allow you to ogle at the massive V12 power plant.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster

Powered rear windshield influences the flow of air in the vehicle and also allows you to select how much you want the V12 to envelope you aurally. The wind deflector works to keep the interior as calm as that of a coupe, even at high speed. It rests on the front windshield frame and can also be be stored in the luggage compartment when not used.

Door windows with chamfered edges fit into the hard-top seal perfectly and work to lay emphasis on the sharp side profile of the car.

The new color you see in the images is a very light, metallic blue color, that Lamborghini calls Azzuro Thetis. The tone varies with the angle of the light. Lamborghini says this color is reminiscent of the shade of the extraordinarily beautiful 1968 Miura Roadster.

Lamborghini also claims this is a tone finish since the windshield pillar, the two roof sections and the rear window area up to the ‘fins’ are painted in gloss black.

‘Sabbia Nefertem’ leather has been used to highlight the stunning hand-made craftsmanship of the upholstery. It also complements the light Azzuro Thetis exterior. Finally, the new Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also features new Dione 20″/21″ rims with a daring, aggressive look. Crafted in light forged aluminum, they lower the weight of the vehicle by 10 Kg as compared with the standard set of rims.

Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster

The new Aventador LP700-4 Roadster needs just 0.1 seconds more than to its coupe brother to hit 100 kph. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3 seconds and can go all the way to 350 km/h. The 6.5 liter aspirated V12 makes, obviously 700 hp, and power is transmitted through the much loved ISR 7-speed gearbox. Push road suspension is still a talking point.

The Aventador Roadster’s V12 also includes a cylinder deactivation system when the engine is working at partial capacity, while the innovative, instant Stop & Start system includes high-performance capacitors known as supercaps to awaken the engine. This is an absolute first in the super sports car segment says Lamborghini.

The new Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster is around 45,000 Euros more expensive than the Coupe at a price of 300,000 Euros, excluding taxes.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black 02

This is the closest you are going to get to SLS AMG GT3 performance on public roads. There was a time when just the word ‘AMG’ uses to send a shiver down our spines. The ‘Black Series’ that AMG introduced with the SLK 55 AMG Black Series in 2006 gave us a preview of what bone rattling, earth shattering, performance cars with the 3 pointed star were capable of. Enthusiasts at large were now a spoilt lot, with the shivers down the spine reserved for cars that only carried the ‘Black Series’ badge. The CLK 63 AMG Black Series (2007), the SL 65 AMG Black Series (2008) and the C 63 AMG Coupé Black Series (2011). Just uttering these names has our ear drums bleeding and heart racing. If you haven’t heard the C 63 AMG Coupe Black yet, we suggest you make the pilgrimage as soon as possible. When you’re done with that pilgrimage, sell your house and let’s go talk to the newest Black Series car, the SLS AMG Coupe Black Series.

There, your life is complete now.

Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Coupe Black 01

“The new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is a perfect study in the one hundred percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to the road. We have drawn inspiration from the worldwide success of the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car on both a conceptual and a technological level. Boasting numerous lightweight components and fascinating driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated ‘Driving Performance’. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and highly emotional driving experiences”, says Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

THE Engine

The additional 60 horses on the SLS AMG Black are achieved by a number of changes to the mill. The V8 now has a maximum engine speed of 8000 rpm compared to the 7200 rpm in the SLS AMG. The air intake ducting had to be modified to suit the increased maximum engine speed. Modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry and optimised bucket tappets featuring a special coating found only in racing vehicles are what make the fully revised high-speed valve train. There is also increase in peak pressure, resulting in improved performance.

Believe us when we say it, the AMG V8 engine in the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is supported by gas-filled struts that braces the eight-cylinder engine on the body, to eliminate undesired load change reactions when throwing this lithe beast around corners. Keeping in mind that the engine will be subject to a zillion hours at the track, AMG engineers have modified the oil bores in the crankshaft, modified the crankshaft bearings, oil pump and high-strength screwed connections for the conrods. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine is hand-built at the AMG hand-finishing section in Affalterbach, according to the philosophy “one man, one engine”.

Of course, after engineering the V8 to the extreme, AMG couldn’t just ignore the exhaust. The AMG sports exhaust system now is produced ( are we allowed to use that word when talking about something so bespoke?) now in titanium as opposed to steel, saving around 13 kilograms. The new exhaust system has distinctive centre and rear mufflers that provide for a the kind of sound that shatters windows on the other side of earth. The new system continues to use the performance-enhancing fan-type exhaust pipes.

Weight Reduction

The SLS AMG Black is lighter than the SLS AMG by around 70 kilograms. The bonnet, the rear panel behind the AMG sports bucket seats, the diagonal braces on the underbody and the torque tube between engine and transmission are made from carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CRP). The SLS AMG was fitted with the 26.6-kilogram sand-cast aluminium housing, whereas the SLS AMG Black’s carbon-fibre torque tube is only 13.3 kilograms. A number of other parts on the aluminium spaceframe have also been replaced by CRP components. Another 8 kilograms are shaved off by using a lithium-ion battery in place of the conventional starter battery.

The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series can be upgraded with the optional AMG Aerodynamics package. You ( really, you?) get a fixed, adjustable carbon-fibre rear aerofoil that replaces the standard-fit aerofoil which extends automatically at speeds of over 120 km/h. To increase negative lift force on the rear axle the rear aerofoil is braced by aluminium elements on a special insert on the boot lid. A Gurney flap, an eight millimetre-high spoiler lip fitted to the ends of the rear spoiler at an angle of 90 degrees results in a further increase in downforce without significantly increasing drag. While the additional carbon-fibre flics on the front apron just function to direct air into the cooling modules in the standard SLS AMG, here, they reduce downforce at the front axle.

The SLS AMG Black Series gets AMG forged wheels in a series-specific 10‑spoke design, painted in matt black with a high sheen finish which save 4 kilograms.

Ride & Handling

The mechanical differential is replaced by a newly developed, electronically controlled AMG rear-axle differential lock with a shorter rear-axle ratio. The new diff is integrated in the compact transmission housing. This system operates with a variable locking effect in acceleration and deceleration mode. The new system also boats of being able to respond more sensitively than before, allowing excellent traction for the driven wheels at all friction levels. AMG also says, in slaloms or when changing lane at high speeds the system has a stabilising effect, as the system is capable of reducing the vehicle’s yaw rate around its vertical axis.

AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension and sports tyres

While the basic layout with double wishbones all-round in aluminium remains unchanged, most components have been reworked for better race track performance. AMG RIDE CONTROL performance suspension with tauter basic tuning and electronically controlled two-stage damping (Sport, Sport +) enables adjusting dynamic characteristic of the vehicle based on driving style. Coil-over spring retainers enable adjustment of wheel loads for finer tuning at the track. Track width has been increased by 20mm at the front axle and 24mm at the rear axle for added grip. Newly developed Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 sports tyres improve grip in corners. AMG speed-sensitive steering has newly defined power steering characteristic.

The AMG ceramic high-performance composite brake system comes as standard. Any tuner knows that reducing the unsprung mass is the key to getting the best out of a car. The ceramic brake system saves 16 kilograms, and as a result of the reduced unsprung masses, comfort and grip is improved. The reduced rotating masses on the front axle provide for more direct steering response.

Interiors

On the exterior the SLS AMG Black gets the ‘AMG solar beam’ finish as an optional extra, in addition to the six other exterior paint finishes from the SLS AMG. The interiors have two choices available : Alcantara® black or Alcantara® black/red. With the two-tone variant, the door centre panels and the applications on the centre console and above the glove compartment are finished in red. The AMG Performance steering wheel with flattened bottom rim section features Alcantara® all round.

Mercedes AMG also mentions something they call the ‘3D seam’ which runs horizontally along the dashboard, a fine Alcantara® strip in anthracite across the entire width of the leather covering. Red contrasting stitching in the leather gives a real stunning finish to the 3D seam, directing the occupants’ attention on the hand-crafted aspect of the interiors.

The bottom section of the dashboard, the door centre panels, centre sections of the AMG sports bucket seats all are clothed in a combination of designo leather and Alcantara®. Embossed AMG emblems on the head restraints add to the exclusivity. In addition to providing fantastic lateral support at high cornering speeds, the AMG sports bucket seats are also 15 kilograms lighter than the standard AMG sports seats.

True to its intention, the SLS AMG Coupe Black Series is not fitted with COMAND APS multimedia system reducing the vehicle’s weight by an additional six kilograms! A carbon-fibre trim element takes the place of the COMAND screen between the vents. COMAND APS can be had as an option. Bold highlights are added by red seat belts and red contrasting stitching on the AMG sports bucket seats, the centre console, the upper and lower section of the dashboard and the door panelling. If that wasn’t enough the floor mats also feature red edging.

Available as an option is the Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system, developed by Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG together Danish audio specialist Bang & Olufsen. A 1000 W amplifier and 11 loudspeakers working in conjunction with precise distribution of the music signals by the sound processor based on selectable seat positions – driver, co-driver or central deliver a phenomenal music experience. The digital sound processor allows switching between high-end studio sound (“Reference”) and surround sound option. All functions are controlled via optional COMAND APS in a special Bang & Olufsen menu. The 50 W lens tweeters are illuminated adding to the premium feel in the cabin. The 250 W subwoofer is accommodated in the rear shelf.
