General Motors Chairman & CEO : Dan Akerson

In addition to shutting down the R&D centre in India, roughly 100 staff scientists in research and development positions at its Technical Center in Warren, Michigan will lose their jobs. If they aren’t offered new positions, the affected workers are reported to have 30 days to apply for other posts within GM before the layoffs commence in early June. The Warren Technical Center currently has around 400 employees.

The downsizing is part of CEO Dan Akerson’s moves for the ‘global restructuring’. Research and development work in India will be realigned with other global R&D locations, says The Detroit News.

“These moves will enable the organization to better focus on commercializing customer-focused innovation in a more efficient and cost effective manner,” GM spokesman Dan Flores tells The Detroit News.

About 90 R&D workers in India could also be reassigned into other jobs.

General Motors : Mary Barra, Senior VP Global Product Development

In other news, Dan Akerson is reported to have mentioned in Florida that Mary Barra, GM’s Senior VP Global Product Development could succeed him as the CEO.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if she were [a candidate],” he told a conference in Florida on Tuesday. But he added: “I think there are a good number of candidates,” saying that he would not like narrow down the field at this stage.

Ms Barra, whose father worked for GM, is said to have started work at GM as an 18-year-old student to help pay her tuition fees. She trained as an electrical engineer and has an MBA from Stanford University. She is now tasked with overseeing and increasing the efficiency of the global design and production of GM’s cars.

TVS Motor Company today announced the launch of its new 2012 Apache Series RTR with an all new beast themed styling. The new design, with all lines pulled back, all excesses eliminated and all curves chiseled to perfection, synergizes seamlessly with a high performance powertrain to look dynamic, even when stationary, says TVS Motors.

The new design and styling has been incorporated in all TVS Apache models including the 160, 180 and the 180 ABS.

New TVS Apache : Beast Unleashed 1

“We have taken the Apache RTR to the next level with obsessive engineering and menacing design. The priority in every step of the Apache brand’s development has been race bred performance. Every system, detail and component has been tuned to maximize performance. Apache as a brand has been very well received,” H S Goindi, President-Marketing, TVS Motor Company said.

The pilot lamps have been inspired by the ‘eye of fury’ – which consists of LED light guide technology combined with new pilot lamps to form a pair of intense animalistic eyes that is activated on ignition, night or day.

Chiseled and sharp tank shrouds constitute a revolutionary new aerodynamic package which helps reduce engine heat says TVS. A new digital console and a lot of carbon fiber accents distinguish the new variants.

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way, shall we? Unlike car buyer guides from auto magazines, First Gear is of course, a manufacturer initiative. While it is safe to assume that Ford will use this guide as one way to grab the attention of a prospective customer, what’s surprising is that Ford only ‘suggests’ that ‘this’ product from Ford might satisfy ‘these’ criteria.

First Gear : First Time Car Buyer Guide From Ford

‘First Gear’ is a colourful, comprehensive first time car buyers guide for Jack and Jill, the typical first time car buyer couple.

First Gear has been designed and published elsewhere, but the content has been greatly customized to the Indian consumer. There are a number of quotes from Michael Boneham and Nigel Wark, addressing issues specific to India. There are also case studies presented with regard to India.

To avoid the hardsell you may want to tell the salesperson that you won’t be making a purchase today, and are only visiting to gather information.

An obvious, yet not so obvious point. While there is the educated car buyer who knows how to get the best deal from the salesperson, there is always the first time car buyer in India, for whom the purchase is more a matter of pride and a symbol of having ‘arrived’ than anything else. He/she might just succumb to the pressure of the salesperson and tick those options they may never use.

“Ask the dealer : What can you do today to make me buy this vehicle” advises Joseph Cueter, operations manager for Ford’s Customer Service Division, Asia Pacific and Africa.”

There is of course, always THAT car you’ve been waiting for, something you would sell you soul for. Let the sales person get a whiff of your desperateness and he has an upper hand over you. It is always the salesperson’s initiative to convince you to buy a car, so even if you have already made your decision make sure the sales person does his job by reassuring you of your choice.

How much should you optimally spend on a car?

“Customers should not feel too much pressure from their car payment.” notes Nigel Wark, Ford India’s Executive Director of Marketing, Sales and Service. “..the customers average bank balance should be at least double the amount of the car payment” he adds.

How do you protect yourself from the fluctuations in the cost of oil and raw materials that could drive up the price of components and thus, your maintenance expenses? Page 35 of First Gear gives you the answer.

Chapter 5: Technology on Wheels is the definitive example of what this buyers guide can do for Ford. The chapter lists all the conveniences in a new car, thanks to technology and the All New Ford Fiesta ticks most of the boxes!

Nuggets of wisdom from Ford’s DSFL programmes are also presented here in brief. Changing oil every 3 months, the need to let engines warm at idle before setting off, and buying fuel early in the morning to get more bang for your buck are some of the myths Ford tries to dispel.

The book is a fantastic read, and fulfills its purpose, in addition to providing information that educates the consumer about owning a car. Expect to be handed copies if this book at various promotional Ford events.

Casey Stoner riding the factory Repsol Honda RC 213V put behind an indifferent qualifying position of fifth on the grid and a history of never having won a race at Jerez to take a convincing first victory of the season after having faded away from pole at Qatar due to an arm pump problem.  This time around Stoner had no such problems and was able to get ahead of both teammate Dani Pedrosa and factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo within the first couple of laps and then maintained his position at the head of the field.  Jorge Lorenzo was his usual self, refusing to give up and closing in on Stoner whenever the opportunity presented itself but never really was able to challenge Stoner for victory despite being within one second of the leader almost through out the race.  The fire works were provided by Cal Crutchlow riding the Monster Tech3 Yamaha who diced excitingly with his own teammate Andrea Dovizioso, Nicky Hayden on the Marlboro Ducati who surprised everyone yesterday by qualifying in third position (for the first time since 2010) and finally with Dani Pedrosa.  However despite his trying various different line and various attacking moves, Pedrosa held his nerve to finish ahead of Crutchlow in third position and on the podium again.  The podium finishers of the first race were the podium finishers in the second race as well albeit in a different order.  Lorenzo had won at Qatar, while Pedrosa finished second and Stoner third.

Apart from Cal Crutchlow interest in the race was also provided by Nicky Hayden.  Not only did he qualify on the front row he also diced with the front runners convincingly for quite a few laps, before he began fading away.  While Hayden was dicing he held his nerve and continued to ride hard and fast despite nearly being punted out of the race by Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow who were fighting for track position.  While riding at the front despite the Ducati’s reluctance to turn the way the Honda and the Yamaha were, Hayden looked comfortable on the motorcycle.  On the contrary his teammate and the much celebrated Valentino Rossi could only manage to qualify 13th on the grid for today’s race.  He has never been a great qualifier even when he was on the best of machinery but even by those standards his position was dismal to say the least.  However, Rossi compensated during the course of the race by finally climbing to 9th position and finishing there just one place behind teammate Hayden.  However the time difference between the two of them was a considerable four seconds and more.

The first two races of the season have shown that while Andrea Dovizioso could be thinking in the right direction when he believes that this is Ben Spies’ last season on the factory Yamaha, he perhaps is not too correct in his belief that he can ride the factory Yamaha next to Lorenzo in 2013.  For the second time this season, Cal Crutchlow has not only finished in 4th place and much ahead of Dovizioso but he has also seemed the better rider with greater determination and grit.  However, in the 18 race season when only two have been run it would not be prudent to right any scripts about what will be anyone’s fate for next year, except of course for Rossi.  Dovizioso finished in fifth position while Ben Spies could only manage 11th the last of the prototypes and a factory spec prototype at that.  Spies needs to get his act together and quickly if he has to sustain his hopes of continuing on the factory Yamaha.  A hard charging Alvaro Bautista on the San Carlo Gresini Honda (prototype) finished in 6th place ahead of rookie Stefan Bradl on the LCR Honda which is supposed to be the bike that was meant for the now late Marco Simoncelli. If that is indeed the case then Bradl has access to factory spec machinery from Honda and Bautista finishing ahead of him is a statement about how well Bautista has adapted to the Honda after two seasons on the now absent Suzuki machinery which never looked like a top 10 package leave alone a winning one.

The top ten was rounded about Hector Barbera who is riding the sole Pramac Ducati this season. The other Ducati of Karel Abraham, the Cardion AB Ducati crashed during the course of the race and limped to the finish line in last place just behind the Suter-BMW of Colin Edwards who qualified in last place for the race.  Four CRT machines of Aleix Espargaro, Danilo Petrucci, Mattia Pasini and Ivan Silva finished in the points.  While the first three bikes were the Aprilia ART machines (with Petrucci’s featuring a trellis frame developed by his team Ioda Racing) the last point scorer is the BQR Blusens team machine featuring a Kawasaki ZX10R engine in an Inmotec developed carbon fibre/aluminium hybrid frame.  His teammate Yonny Hernandez on the Kawasaki-FTR did not complete even one lap of the race.  Other DNFs were Michelle Pirro on the Gresini Honda CRT, James Ellison on the PBM ART and Randy De Puniet whose machine was the leading CRT till it died down on the last lap of the race.

Some people actually opine that Rossi and Hayden are also in effect riding CRT machines since the chassis of their bikes is made by FTR rather than by Ducati itself and the only difference there is between the FTR-Ducatis and the other CRTs is that the former use factory spec prototype engines while the latter use production based Aprilia, Kawasaki and BMW engines.  Looking at the performance of the Ducati in the first two races it is obvious that it is not the material of the chassis or the lack of a traditional frame that has been Ducati’s problem.  But we shall save that for another article.

Anticipating increased positive sales growth in India, Porsche is enhancing its business set-up by appointing Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited as its sole official importer in India.

Porsche Baby Cayenne SUV Macan : Design Sketch

Development of emerging markets is clearly important for Porsche’s future, and we are confident sales in the sub-continent will continue to grow in the coming years, especially with new Porsche models being introduced in the future.”

Since 2004, Porsche has delivered a total of 1,052 cars to discerning customers in India. In 2011, 85 per cent of total deliveries were Cayenne models.

The first highlight of our new cooperation will be the market introduction of the new generation Porsche 911 Carrera, an iconic sports car many said could never be bettered.”

As well as the continuing growth in sales of the Cayenne, Reddi expects a great deal of interest in the soon to be launched Panamera Diesel, and excitement is already building over the recently announced launch of the Macan – the new Porsche SUV which is expected to roll off the German production lines in 2013.

Vespa Launch India Details 03

Will Piaggio export vehicles from the Baramati plant

No, we do not have any such plans for now.

Do you have a dealer in Hyderabad?( My Ed made me do this. He couldn’t find a dealership in Hyderabad, so he pulled rank and made me ask this question.)

Of course we do! ( Piaggio has three dealerships in AP – Hyderbad, Vijayawada and Secunderabad).

Need to find your local Vespa dealer? We suggest you finish reading this article and then head to Vespa India Store Locator.

Which other player in the market do you consider competition for Vespa?

None. The Vespa is being positioned as a ‘lifestyle product’ and we have no intention to go head on with other scooter manufacturers.

There were more colours shown at the 2012 Auto Expo that seem to be missing from the current lineup?

We might launch other colours in the future.

Will the new engine be manufactured in India and exported to other growth markets?

No.

Why was there a need for a new engine?

The Indian consumer has a number of demands. In addition to good looks, fuel efficiency is also a priority. The 3 valve 125cc engine offers the best mileage. The Indian consumer also demands the engine have good acceleration. The new engine ticks all these boxes.

Can you talk to us about your marketing strategy for the Vespa

We will be having a number of lifestyle events. There is also the Vespa club. We are also exploring options through digital media. You might have seen our website onceuponavespa.com that lets you play a game with the grand prize being a visit to the Vespa Museum in Italy.

Vespa 1945 MP6 Prototype : Design by D'Ascanio

So, why’s a Vespa called a Vespa? D’Ascanio was given the task of designing an extremely simple and cheap to run two wheeler. D’Ascanio put the engine on the rear wheel, unlike in motorcycles. In September 1945, when Enrico Piaggio saw the first MP6 prototype he exclaimed “Sembra una vespa!” which translated means “It resembles a wasp!” and that is how the name Vespa came about.

At the 2011 EICMA Motor Show in Milan, Piaggio presented its tribute to the original MP6 prototype. The Vespa Quarantasei as it was presented initially ( 46 in Italian) is a design that is more ‘waspy’ than any other Vespa. The Quarantasei was then renamed as the 946 thanks to auto journalists who consider it a chore to twist their tongue even slightly.

By distilling the essence of a scooter that changed the style of individual mobility forever and enhancing the lines that secured its success, the Pontedera Style Centre has projected the Vespa into a possible future where references and projections, tradition and innovation, merge seamlessly says Vespa.

Here’s the scoop. In conversation with the management at Piaggio during the Vespa launch in India, we were informed that the 946 had an aluminium body and would be powered by a new 125 cc engine with lower emissions, less noise and higher fuel efficiency.

Stunning eh? The entire scooter is void of any excess, cables at all. The entire shape is as clean and streamlined as a scooter can be. The blinkers/indicators are on the bar ends, in the shape of an aerofoil!
