Jorge Lorenzo : 2012 MotoGP - Grand Prix of Portugal, Estoril

It would’ve been Lorenzo’s fifth consecutive pole at Estoril if not for the heavy traffic and a lack of confidence in certain corners says Yamaha Racing Team. After the Randy De Puniet-Colin Edwards crash, Lorenzo who was leading the sessions, gradually dropped to fourth on the second row, just 0.278 seconds from pole.

Ben Spies endured an extremely frustrating qualifying session with at least three hot laps interrupted by slower traffic. Having been denied a front row lap time Spies will start tomorrow’s race from fifth on the grid alongside his team mate on the second row.

Jorge Lorenzo 4th on the grid

“The main problem for me today was that in turn one and two I couldn’t enter aggressively so I lost a lot of time in this section. In general the bike is not giving me a good feeling so this lap time was the maximum I could get today. We are in fourth but tomorrow is going to be hard as I have to try to pass Cal who is a hard braker! I will keep thinking positive and see what we can do.”

Ben Spies : 2012 MotoGP - Grand Prix of Portugal, Estoril

“It was a tough session for everybody, the annoying thing was that three of my best laps were blocked but that’s just the way it goes. Two of them I think could have been avoided but one of them was just a racing incident. We’re on the second row in the middle and we’re a lot better than we were in Jerez. I feel good on the bike and I just need to keep building the confidence now. Being three tenths behind Jorge at this track is pretty good.”

Wilco Zeelenberg, Team Manager

“It was a tough qualifying, we were on pole up until nine minutes to go so I think fourth looks worse than we actually are. 0.2 of a second is not a lot. We are still struggling on rear grip in corner entry; especially the first two splits so we need to improve the bike. If we can do that we have a good chance to battle at the front tomorrow.”

Massimo Meregalli, Team Director

“We missed the first row but we are pretty close. Traffic compromised at least two or three laps for Ben but overall we are satisfied as we are coming from a really bad weekend. The race will be tough, but we are confident as up to five minutes from the end of qualifying we were really close. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.”

Ben Spies : 2012 MotoGP - Grand Prix of Portugal, Estoril

Just a few days ago we had written an article where we quoted a pessimistic Carlos Checa who said a fifth place at Monza would be like a victory for Ducati.  However, the Super Pole session at Monza saw the Effenbert Liberty Ducati 1198 of Sylvain Guintoli set pole position for time for tomorrow’s races.  Tom Sykes on the Kawasaki ZX10R has shown consistent speed yet again to take second on the grid while Marco Melandri on the BMW S1000R took the third place.  Carlos Checa himself did not do too badly by claiming the last spot on the front row in fourth position aboard the Ducati.  Jonathan Rea riding the factory Honda CBR1000RR took fifth place while the much fancied Aprilia RSV4 of Max Biaggi could only take sixth place.  The Provec team that runs the Kawasaki Official entry chose to replace Joan Lascorz with Spaniard Sergio Gadea who did not even qualify for Super Pole.

The surprise speed of Ducati in qualifying may not indicate race pace with Monza favouring motorcycles with horse power and this puts the Aprilias and the BMWs as favourites. Tom Sykes has gone consistently on the other fast machine the Kawasaki but has not been able to convert his speed into a win so far.  The races tomorrow should be exciting, with both World Superbike and MotoGP in the vicinity of each other on the same Sunday.  Enjoy watching.

Casey Stoner stole pole from Cal Crutchlow at the Estoril circuit in Portugal in the last minutes of the qualifying of the MotoGP session for tomorrow’s race.  Stoner’s teammate on the other Repsol Honda, Dani Pedrosa managed to demote Crutchlow to third place on the starting grid for tomorrow’s race.  Factory Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo who is leading in points thus far this season and has an impeccable qualifying record at Estoril held pole for most of the one hour session before being punted off the front row, for the first time in years, by the two Repsol Hondas and the Monster Tech3 Yamaha of Crutchlow.  Lorenzo will start tomorrow’s race from fourth place on the grid while his teammate Ben Spies who has been off colour so far this season overcame his own personal gremlins to take fifth on the grid.  San Carlo Gresini rider Alvaro Bautista, who is getting more comfortable with the Honda RC213V with every passing race took the sixth spot while Andrea Dovizioso took a lacklustre seventh spot on the starting grid.

In what is definitely a blow to the factory Marlboro Ducati GP 12s, Hector Barbera took eighth on the qualifying grid on his Pramac Ducati which is the GP Zero ahead of the GP 12s of Valentino Rossi in ninth and Nicky Hayden in tenth place.  Rookie Stefan Bradl on the LCR Honda took 11th place while 12th went to Team Aspar ART rider Aleix Espargaro who qualified as the top CRT rider.

The session was red flagged when Randy De Puniet lost the front end of his ART motorcycle while being on a flying lap and while falling took out Colin Edwards who was probably cruising back to the pits on his Suter-BMW.  While De Puniet was unhurt, Edwards had to be carted off on a stretcher and news from the medical centre says that he may have broken his collarbone.

Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Lotus Espirit design went under Julian Thompson’s pen in 1993 to undergo subtle changes to become the Espirit S4. The S4 was then tuned to 300hp and became the S4s with the stunning rear wing from the Sport 300. In 1996, Lotus had a compact V8 with no car to plonk it in, the V8 was detuned to 354 hp to ensure the Renault transmission held together.

Cam Shaft – Premium Wrapping has paid tribute to Ayrton Senna with a John Player Special liveried Lotus Espirit V8. If the black and gold stunning livery hasn’t dropped you to the floor how about the upgrades on the Lotus? A Red Race control device with optimized characteristics has been fitted. Adjustable cases by Forge inside the turbo compressor pumps and a self designed compressor cooling system (on the basis of Lotus-Omega) as well as two 100-cell structure catalysts give the Espirit V8 with 492 hp (362 kW), 4.3 seconds to hit 100 km/h from standstill and a top speed of 305 km/h. Compare this to the stock specs of 354 hp that propelled the Espirit to 100 kph in about 4.9 seconds.

Since the Renault transmission was the reason why the V8 was detuned in the original Espirit, Cam-Shaft swapped the 5 speed unit for a 6-speed Dog-Engagement gearbox equipped with a longer total ratio. The braking has been worked on with AP racing 4-piston callipers and perforated brake discs with the diameter of 330 mm.

In addition to the gold livery, there’s also a signature in gold of the legendary racing driver on the car and the number 12, the number on the John Players Special Lotus 97T in which Senna won his first Grand Prix at Estoril in 1985. A wet wet wet race that was.

Fiat Linea 2012 01

This is the new Fiat Linea that might heading to our shores later this year. As is evident from the images, there is just that much more chrome everywhere. The number plate at the rear has been moved up, and the bumpers front and rear have been redesigned.

Fiat Linea 2012 02

The new Fiat family grille might not go down well with current fans of the Linea, but it gels well with Fiat’s new design language that we first saw on the Nuovo Panda.

Fiat Linea 2012 03

The new Linea is expected to debut with the 1.4 MultiAir petrol and the 75 horsepower 1.3 MultiJet II diesel. The MultiAir technology implements an electro-hydraulic valve control system to ensure combustion is optimal at all times, CO2 emissions are lowered by 25% and power is increased by 10% at the same time. With 8 injections per cycle, the 1.3 MultiJet II improves low rpm torque delivery by up to 25% and cuts emissions by 6%

KTM Duke 200

We cannot help it. We just have to rub our hands in glee as for the first time the tables have turned and we get to keep one of the most fantastic motorcycles of this decade while the rest of the world has to wait.

Owing to the huge success of the 200cc katoom in India, Malaysia and South America, the European launch has been delayed by a month to June reports MCN.

Presented at the 2012 Taiwan Motorcycle Show, along with the DL281, the DL282 is a 750cc cruiser powered by water-cooled, dual camshaft single-cylinder 4 valve fuel injected engine. Bore and stroke are 106mm and 85mm respectively. The transmission is via a CVT unit that trasmits power to the rear wheel through a belt.

A single seater with dual 292mm discs up front and back, and a stunning matt black tank, the DL282 might catch fancy of the Indian biker, if he/she is insane enough to pass over the Classic 500!

The DL282 also has 4 piston calipers both front and back. The rear has adjustable dual shocks and the tank is good for 17 litres of fuel.

The DL282 is also 2160mm long with a wheelbase of 1500mm and a kerb weight of 210 kg.

Oh yes, you’re right, it is a slow news day.

Rimac Automobili will officially start taking reservations and deposits for the production version of the Concept_One on the opening day of the Top Marques Monaco. The first customers will have the privilege of owning this unique limited-edition hypercar, with only 88 models being produced. It has been reported that the price is pegged at $980,000 for the Concept_One capable of 1088 hp, can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 2.8 seconds and continue to accelerate to the limit of 305 km/h. 92kWh of energy in the Battery Modules delivers enough juice for up to 600 km of range.

The wheel looks different from the actual Concept_One, the rest of the car seems unchanged.

Rimac Automobili’s unique powertrain is divided into the front and rear sub-system. Each of those sub-systems contains two symmetrical motor-controller-reduction-gearbox units. This enables control of each wheel independently, thousands of times each second, in both directions, and Rimax says, an ‘unforgettable driving experience’. The motors are ‘Liquid Cooled Permanent Magnet’ types generating 250kW each. The batteries are each rated at 92kWh and collectively offer a range of 600km, which again we think would depend on driving conditions.

Audi A4 India For 2012 01

Audi has done enough to ensure that rivals like the new C-Class and the BMW 3 Series don’t simply get a walk over from the A4. The new Audi A4 is less expensive than the predecessor, starting at Rs 27.33 lakh for the 1.8TFSI, Rs 29.38 lakh for the 2.0TDI and Rs 38 lakh for the 3.0TDI (Ex-showroom Delhi). The fuel efficiency on an average has improved by 10 percent on the new Audi A4. The 1.8 TFSI offers a fuel efficiency of 15.64 km/l (ARAI) – fuel efficiency has improved by 25 percent compared to its predecessor. The 2.0 TDI offers an efficiency of 16.55 km/l (ARAI), thus ensuring best in class fuel efficiency.

“The new Audi A4 with its progressive design, efficient driving dynamics and class defining interiors will take the driving experience to a new paradigm for all our customers. The young and sleek looks will appeal to the younger generation who have arrived in life and are looking to affirm their status and positions among their peers. The engines with their superior technology will give better fuel efficiencies while the new and improved lines and interiors will certainly turn heads and add to the comfort and luxury that one expects from Audi. The outstanding sales performance in the first quarter of 2012 of its predecessor encouraged us to pre-pone the launch of the new Audi A4”, said Mr. Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India.

The family has gone through design changes, and characteristically, the changes are very subtle. The engine hood has a more pronounced curvature. The upper corner of the single frame grille are tapered, and not unlike the new BMW 3 Series, the cross ribs and Audi rings have a highlighted three dimensional form. The grille is painted gray in most models. The bumpers have been redesigned with angular air inlets, revised grilles and flat front fog lights.

The headlights have also changed, with a slight wave at the bottom edges, and a re-arranged interior. Xenon plus headlights are available from Audi on request. The LED daytime running lights form a narrow, optically homogeneous band that remains open in the vicinity of the xenon lens. The adaptive light with dynamic and static cornering lights are available on request.

The tail lights reflect the shape of the headlights, and in combination with xenon plus have homogeneous strips of LEDs. The bumper with its diffuser insert has been redesigned, with two tailpipes as part of the exhaust system.

15 paint finishes, including four new tones are available.

Interior

The interior of the A4 models has been refined. Audi offers a wide selection of new steering wheels with chrome and high-gloss inlays, with the leather sport steering wheel also featuring a flattened lower rim. The steering arm and the ignition key have been modified. The interior also has its touches of high-gloss materials and elegant chrome trim.

The MMI Navigation Plus system now has been simplified with only four buttons taking the place of eight, in the previous version. Audi mentions that improvements have been made in the operation of the automatic transmission, the efficient air conditioning systems, Audi drive select and the multifunction steering wheel. The seat heating and air conditioning are now directly operated with the respective buttons.

With the kind of obsession that only the Germans can live with, Audi has re-coordinated all interior colors, except black. The upholstery range has also been revised, with Fine Nappa leather replacing Valcona leather. The new, single-part cluster trim has been adapted in color to the interior, while the inlays are available in Aluminum Trigon, walnut dark brown and fine grain ash natural and the premium Beaufort oak plywood inlay.

Engine options include

New 1.8 TFSI engine producing 125 kW/170 hp and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) and a claimed fuel efficiency 15.64 km/l ARAI

2.0 TDI with 143PS and 320Nm and fuel efficiency of 16.55 km/l (ARAI)

3.0 TDI generating 245 hp and 500 Nm

Engineering

Engineers at Audi have again striven to find the best balance of sporty precision and ride comfort. The mounts of the rear suspension control arms and the characteristics of the shock absorbers have been even more finely tuned. Most of the components of the five-link front suspension and the trapezoidal-link rear suspension are made of aluminum.

The electromechanical power steering is all new. It offers better feel for the road surface and slight brake applications counteract pulling to the side on unevenly slippery surfaces.

Drive modes on offer include “comfort,” “auto,” “dynamic”, “efficiency” and if there is an onboard navigation system, the additional “individual” mode.

Dynamic steering offered as option, that using a superposition gear adjusts the gear ratioin a continuously variable manner depending on the driven speed; at the handling limits small interventions compensate for understeering and oversteering.

Ioda Racing runs teams in all three classes of the MotoGP grid.  It runs a team that uses its own propriety trellis frame in Moto 2 and in the newly introduced Moto 3 category Ioda is using its own engine as well, though its origins are in the Oral engine which is also used by Mahindra Racing in Moto 3.  The Italian team has now confirmed that it is going to put a four cylinder engine based on the single cylinder Moto 3 engine which is of 250cc and this will produce a MotoGP engine of 1000cc.  Ioda Racing is quite optimistic of this prospect and has said that it will probably run the new engine in its propriety trellis frame by the end of this year itself.  Presently Ioda runs an Aprilia engine in its frame and this motorcycle is ridden by Danilo Petrucci.  And if the experiment it has embarked upon succeeds then Ioda could become a full constructor that manufactures its own engines and frames.
