Renault Duster Spotted Chennai May 01

IAB reports that their sources at Renault India say the French carmaker intends to price the Duster sensationally and is counting on the SUV to give Renault India the boost it has been waiting for.

While their products – the Koleos, Fluence and Pulse – have won our admiration, they are yet to make inroads in the Indian automotive market.

Renault is counting on the Duster and the yet to be unveiled Nissan Sunny based sedan – the Scala to do just that.

IAB has arrived at the conclusion that all these facts translate to an introductory price of less than 6 lakhs for the 1.6L petrol model and a little more than 7 lakhs for the 1.5L dCi 110 diesel engine model.

We would definitely want these prices to be labelled on the Dusters as they roll off the production line at the Renault-Nissan factory in Chennai, but we would rather wait a couple more weeks for more information, just in case this highly optimistic speculation doesn’t pan out.

There’s no race on the Formula 1 calendar that draws celebrities by the dozen like the Monaco Grand Prix does. This year was no different.

Mahindra XUV at the 11th Auto Expo 2012

In the previous phase of bookings, the XUV500 was made available in 19 cities across India and had received an overwhelming 25000+ booking applications from customers. Out of these booking requests, the names of 7200 winning applicants were selected through an automated process, called the XUV500 Draw.

Now Mahindra has ramped up production to 4000 vehicles per month and has announced the opening of bookings on June 8th.

Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “It has been an incredible journey so far for the XUV500 and we are pleased to take the product national. We have been inundated with requests for re-opening of bookings not just from existing cities but also from cities where the XUV500 was not available. Now that we have ramped-up our production capacity significantly, we are confident that we will be able to take care of the growing all-India demand for the XUV500.”

SARTRE on a public motorway outside Barcelona, Spain

What’s a platoon? Simply put, the vehicles that are around you at that instant form the platoon you belong to. When the light turns red at a signal, the vehicles that have already crossed the signal are in a different platoon, and the vehicles that will start with you when the light turns green, form your platoon now. The SARTRE project stands for Safe Road Trains for the Environment. SARTRE wants to change the way you travel, by developing safe environmental road trains or platoons.

A three year old European Union project, involving seven collaborating partners is led by Ricardo UK Ltd with Volvo Car Corporation and Volvo Technology of Sweden being two of the seven.

A road train/platoon as proposed by the team consists of a lead vehicle driven by a professional driver followed by a number of vehicles. Building on Volvo Car Corporation’s and Volvo Technology’s already existing safety systems – including features such as cameras, radar and laser sensors – the vehicles monitor the lead vehicle and also other vehicles in their immediate vicinity. The lead vehicle and the convoy also communicate wirelessly, and the the vehicles in the platoon “mimic” the lead vehicle using Ricardo autonomous control, accelerating, braking and turning as the leader does.

This project is of course slightly different from Google’s autonomous vehicle. The SARTRE project involves the human element in the lead vehicle and the convoy just mimics the lead vehicle. Considering the level of skill displayed by the majority of road users, we can assume that it would be much safer for a majority of drivers to let the system follow the pro driver in the lead, when travelling on a highway. The system is convenient for the users as it will allow them to do something else instead of monotonously gobbling up the miles. As Linda Wahlström, project manager for the SARTRE project at Volvo Car Corporation points out, the distance between the vehicles in the convoy is much less and thus reduced air drag and better fuel efficiency.

The only cause of concern for the team is surprisingly, the ability of the passengers to acclimatize to sitting in the drivers seat doing nothing and letting the system take over. Tom Robinson, project manager, Ricardo UK Ltd., says people acclimatize quickly and the next generation of drivers would find it much easier.

“Driving among other road-users is a great milestone in our project. It was truly thrilling,” says Linda Wahlström. The vehicles drove at 85 kilometres an hour. The gap between each vehicle was just six metres. “During our trials on the test circuit we tried out gaps from five to fifteen metres,” relates Linda Wahlström.

There is also the biggest draw of the system : the only addition to the cars that make them different from any Volvo you would buy from a showroom, is the wireless network installed between the cars!

“We’ve focused really hard on changing as little as possible in existing systems. Everything should function without any infrastructure changes to the roads or expensive additional components in the cars. Apart from the software developed as part of the project, it is really only the wireless network installed between the cars that set them apart from other cars available in showrooms today.” says Linda.

Part-funded by the European Commission under the Framework 7 programme, SARTRE is led by Ricardo UK Ltd and comprises collaboration between the following additional participating companies: Idiada and Tecnalia Research & Innovation of Spain, Institut für Kraftfahrzeuge Aachen (IKA) of Germany and SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, Volvo Car Corporation and Volvo Technology of Sweden.

Podium GT1 World Championship 2012 Round 3 Navarra Spain

The Navarra round brings McLaren and Hexis Racing their best results till date in the 2012 GT1 World Championship. Hexis Racing made a huge commitment when it fielded the as yet unproven MP4-12C GT3 in favour of the Aston Martin DBRS9 they raced last year. The bets are off now, Hexis Racing took 1st and 2nd place in the Qualifying Race and then again came out victorious in the Championship Race today!

The No.1 McLaren MP4-12C of Fred Makowiecki and Stef Dusseldorp led home their stablemates Alvaro Parente and Gregoire Demoustier in the No.2 car.

Makowiecki, who started from 16th on the grid after technical issues during the morning’s Qualifying session, said: “This is a great result for the whole team after all the troubles we have had. Everybody has been working really hard to make the car reliable and competitive. To finish first and second is a really nice feeling and hopefully we can continue in the same way for tomorrow’s Championship Race.”

The double race win pushes Makowiecki and Dusseldorp to the top of the drivers’ championship.

Alvaro Parente and Gregoire Demoustier managed a 4th, which is still a fantastic result for the team. Nicky Pastorelli / Thomas Jäger finished third in their Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3.

Philippe Dumas, Hexis Racing, GT1 World Championship 2012 Round 3 Navarra Spain 05

Hexis team boss Philippe Dumas was delighted with the result after a difficult start to the season. “It is great for the team to win both races this weekend,” he said. “We have had problems but we have fought hard to get to this point and everybody involved with the team deserves this result. My young daughter asked me to bring home the trophy and I am very happy to do it.”

Parente, who has been involved in a lot of the development of the McLaren MP4-12C, said: “Navarra is where we have been doing all our development and testing with the car as a team so it is a good place to get our first victory.

Mark Webber Nico Rosberg Fernando Alonso Podium 2012 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix Race Day

Mark Webber has won the Monaco Grand Prix of 2012, holding off Nico Rosberg, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. The leading drivers were so close on track, driving nose to tail with a gap of just 1.3 secs separating Vettel from the race winner Webber when they crossed the finish line. This is the first time in history, that six different drivers have won the first six races of a Formula 1 Season.

Mark Webber inherited the pole from Schumacher, who was given a penalty for the incident with Bruno Senna in Spain. Webber had a good start off the line, and managed to be the first driver to reach turn one, ahead of Nico Rosberg who had an equally good start. Lewis Hamilton’s start wasn’t that good, but he managed to hold on to the 3rd place. Behind him though, things began to happen in earnest as a slow starting Romain Grosjean made contact with Fernando Alonso and as he took an avoiding maneouver ended up clipping Schumacher’s car. While Schumacher made it through the crash Grosjean damaged his rear suspension and had to retire before he reached the first corner. All the drivers managed to avoid his sliding Lotus, with Kobayashi getting a nudge from the Lotus. Pastor Maldonado’s weekend continued to get worse as he damaged his front wing damage and had to retire, bringing out the safety car on the 2nd lap of the race. De la Rosa too had to retire after losing his rear wing.

The safety car went back into the pits at the end of the 4th lap, and Fernando Alonso was breathing down the neck of Lewis Hamilton who seemed to be struggling with his car. After trying to get past Hamilton for two laps Alonso decided it was better to conserve his tyres for a later charge before the first round of Pit Stops. Massa, for a change was very tailing Alonso in the other Ferrari hard and fast.

The running order now was Webber, Rosberg, Hamilton, Alonso, Massa, Vettel. Lap 10 saw the Sauber of Kobayashi retire after his first lap incident with the Grosjean’s Lotus E20. Meanwhile Webber was setting fastest times, lap after lap, with Rosberg close behind, and Alonso was under pressure from Felipe Massa.

Petrov retired from the race on Lap 17 due to suspected electrical failure. This was the 5th retirement of the race. Alonso had started to close in on Lewis again by the 20th Lap and in the process had set the fastest lap. In the midst of all this, teams were putting off their pit stops in anticipation of rain in the next 15 minutes. The driver struggling the most was Kimi Raikkonen who was on the super-softs and struggling to find pace in those tyres, and was posting lap times 2 seconds slower than Vettel who was ahead of him. Kimi Raikkonen did a good job of holding back Michael Schumacher to keep his position.

Rosberg was the first of the front runners to pit and he did so on lap 28 and he put on the Prime, the yellow marked soft, or in this race, the harder compound tyres. He came out in sixth place, to a clear track ahead of him. Webber and Hamilton pitted on lap 29 and they took the Prime tyres too. Webber manages to take the lead and Hamilton stayed in 3rd place. Alonso pitted on Lap 30 and it was a very quick stop and Hamilton’s comparatively slow stop meant that Alonso jumped Hamilton in the pits.

Lap 31 saw Massa pitting for the Prime tyres, and coming out behind Lewis in 7th place. This meant that Vettel was in the lead. Vettel had started on the Prime tyres and was pushing hard. Vettel eventually pitted on Lap 46 and a good pit stop meant that he came out ahead of Hamilton in 4th place.

Sergio Perez meanwhile had an incident with Kimi Raikkonen as he cut across the Finn while entering the pits and that made Kimi lose a place to Nico Hulkenberg. He was given a Drive-through Penalty for that incident.

Jenson Button who started on the Prime tyres was not having a great weekend as he was still struggling with the car. He pitted on lap 39 and came out in 15th place behind the Caterham of Heikki Kovalainen. After that he could not find a way past the Finn. The battle went on till lap 72 when Jenson Button tried an ambitious move on the Caterham at the swimming pool section of the track, but ended up spinning to retirement after a collision with the Finn.

Michael Schumacher who was in 7th place on Lap 60 complained on the radio that he had a problem with the car and he was struggling with pace. Schumacher couldn’t get any pace out of the car and ended up losing places consistently till he was forced to retire on Lap 65. That was the end of a disappointing weekend for the German who had got pole and was looking for a good points haul even after his penalty.

The final moments of the race saw a few spots of rain on various parts of the track. There was ten laps to go and all the front running drivers backed-off a little. This tempted Jean-Eric Vergne to try something out of the box as he pitted for intermediates hoping to have an advantage if it rained. But he was out of luck as the rain never came down in any amounts that justified the use of Intermediates.

The rest of the race saw no real drama anywhere and the at the end of the 78th lap, the running order was Webber, Rosberg, Alonso, Vettel, Hamilton, Massa, di Resta, Hulkenberg, Raikkonen and Bruno Senna taking the final Point of the race.

The remaining drivers who managed to take the chequered flag were Perez, Vergne, Kovalainen, Glock and Karthikeyan.

Gary Paffett THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C Coupe Dtm 2012 Brands Hatch 02

Gary Paffett won his home race, the third round of the DTM 2012 season at Brands Hatch starting from pole position. His lead over Bruno Spengler was close to five seconds. After the opening win in Hockenheim, it was Paffett’s second victory in the third race of the 2012 DTM season, in the THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé. This victory gives Paffett a lead of 25 points over Bruno Spengler in the championship standings. Paffett’s points total 68 now and that of the THOMAS SABO / Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG team at 88, which puts team on top.

DTM 2012 Brands Hatch start

“It’s a great feeling to win my home race. I’ve now finally secured my first DTM victory at this track. The team and my THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé were simply terrific – it was a perfect race that we controlled from start to finish. Still, it was not easy, as Bruno Spengler kept piling on the pressure but we stayed in front. Three races, two wins and one second place – let’s hope this season continues just as it began.” said Paffett on his victory.

After 97 laps, Bruno Spengler crossed the finish line in second place at the wheel of the BMW Bank M3 DTM. Martin Tomczyk driving the BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM finished fourth gaining 12 points. Tomczyk also clocked the fastest lap of the race (42.138 seconds) on lap 57.

Christian Vietoris Mercedes Benz Bank AMG C Coupe DTM 2012 Brands Hatch 04

Spengler started third on the grid, overtook Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé) into second, before settling in to be within striking distance of Paffett throughout the entire race. The front splitter of the BMW Bank M3 DTM was damaged on the kerb in turn one and Spengler had to fend off Mike ‘Rocky’Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi A5 DTM.

“I am very happy with this second place. Gary Paffett was very quick, particularly in the first stint. Despite this, I was able to hang on to his coattails. It reminded me of my win at the Lausitzring, but with the roles reversed. It was a tough race. You do not have much time to take a breather in the cockpit. The team was brilliant again. The second stop was particularly good. My front-left splitter broke towards the end of the race, which made things a bit exciting. But we did enough. The season has been great so far. The three manufacturers are extremely evenly matched, which makes it fun for us drivers as well as the fans.” said Bruno Spengler.

Mike Rockenfeller in the Schaeffler Audi A5 DTM also overtook Christian Vietoris and finished third after the battle with Spengler.

“We all know how difficult overtaking is at Brands Hatch,” said Mike Rockenfeller after the race. “I wanted to secure the points because this third place was enormously important. It gives the whole team a new motivation boost. I want to thank the guys who worked extremely hard during the past few weeks and gave me a superb car here. The situation in yesterday’s qualifying was extremely close. In the race we almost managed to take second place. Finally, we’ve clinched a good result again – we’re going to give everything to continue this way.”

Martin Tomczyk BMW M Performance Parts M3 DTM at 2012 DTM, Brands Hatch

“I didn’t get a very good start off the first row unfortunately. That caused me to drop back a few places at the start of the race. From then on I found it difficult to move up the field but I eventually did manage to gain a few places on the others and collect some important points with sixth place.” said Christian Vietoris.

Miguel Molina put in a good race moving from the first lap in 14th place position seven with consistently fast lap times. He was the quickest driver in the entire field across extensive phases.

Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) had to retire early. Christian Vietoris (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Coupé) and Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) were in the points with finishes in 6th and 8th place respectively. Robert Wickens (stern Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Roberto Merhi (Junge Sterne Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) and Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) came in 14th, 15th, 17th and 19th place.

The manufacturers’ championship is headed by Mercedes-Benz with 133 points, followed by Audi (86 points) and BMW (84 points).

Pastor Maldonado Williams F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco Qualifying 03

Pastor posted competitive times throughout qualifying but was hampered by traffic on his quickest Q3 run. He qualified ninth but will start 24th on the grid after a 10 place penalty for crashing into Perez, five place penalty for a gearbox change. Bruno senna will start 13th.

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer

It has been a tough and busy day for the team with both cars not finishing qualifying as high as we would have liked. Pastor picked up heavy damage to his car in FP3 and the car crew did a fantastic job to do the repairs in time for the start of the first session of qualifying. Pastor also received a 10-place grid penalty due to an incident with Perez. Despite the ninth (prior to penalty) and 14th qualifying positions for Pastor and Bruno respectively, our analysis shows that a top five qualifying position was achievable for us today.

Pastor Maldonado

Everything was quite tight today. We were on the pace and looking good for a top five position but I came across traffic on what would have been my best lap. My second Q3 lap was a bit slower as we lost a bit of grip from the car and tyres. It’s going to be difficult tomorrow with the penalties, but I will do my best and we’ll see.

Bruno Senna Williams F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco Qualifying 02

Bruno Senna

I am disappointed with qualifying. The car definitely had a good lap in it but unfortunately I just pushed too hard and the laptime didn’t come to me. I’m frustrated with myself but we know we have a strong car so now we just have to see what we can do tomorrow. You never know what can happen in Monaco but it’s always easier if you can start further up the grid.

Sergio Perez Sauber F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco Qualifying 02

While Kamui Kobayashi was just missing out on making it into the top ten qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix by finishing 12th in Q2, Sergio Pérez was already on his way to hospital. The precautionary check is obligatory and the Mexican was able to leave the hospital straight away with a clean bill of health. He had hit an Armco barrier on his first lap in Q1. Kamui had been a promising second in Q1, using a fresh set of super soft tyres. In Q2 he improved his lap time by one and a half tenths with another set of fresh super softs, but still it wasn’t good enough for Q3.

Kamui Kobayashi Sauber F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco Qualifying 01

Kamui Kobayashi
“Of course I had hoped for a better result today. With the super soft tyre compound you only have one lap to set a good time. I managed to improve in Q2, but unfortunately not enough to be able to start in Q3. Nevertheless, the car was good and it will be good in the race, so I think we can improve tomorrow. A lot will also depend on our race strategy and some luck in terms of safety car periods, which can always happen here. I’m positive we can score good points tomorrow.”

Sergio Perez Sauber F1 Team 2012 Formula 1 Grand Prix Monaco Qualifying 03

Sergio Pérez
“I am disappointed as I felt we could fight for a very good grid position here. We are still analysing everything to see if there was something wrong with the car. I was on my first lap, so was not pushing a lot. I went into the tunnel and had a lot of understeer and then I went into turns 13 and 14. Thirteen was quite fine but in 14 I just went straight and didn’t get the car to turn.”

Peter Sauber, Team Principal
“I am disappointed and I expected a much better result.”

Giampaolo Dall’Ara, Head of Track Engineering
“The car is definitely quicker than we showed today. We are very disappointed and we don’t know what happened to Sergio. We are looking right now to see if there was a problem with the car. Then with Kamui, it was not a very good lap in Q2. The field is so tight here and our grid positions make things a lot more difficult for tomorrow, but we are in Monaco where anything can happen and we don’t have to give up.”

Peugeot 301 Headed To India 02

Before we get into the details of the car, allow us to point out that the only indication that this car might be headed to India comes from Autocar Professional’s story here which mentions that a midsize sedan codenamed M3-M4 was being developed at its facilities in Spain and will start production from the plant at Vigo. The story was published in the month of February 2011. Much has happened since then. Peugeot broke ground for its plant in Sanand, then decided to drop the plans and share production capacity with the GM plant in Talegaon after their new alliance, then GM dropped the bomb on Peugeot saying their plant has only a spare capacity of just 61,000 units for three future models – the Sail (hatchback and saloon) as well as the Enjoy MPV.

While we wonder where people find the confidence to claim ‘New Peugeot 301 headed to India’ we cannot choose to not introduce you to the Peugeot 301. What you make of this story dear reader, is up to you.

Peugeot 301 Headed To India 03

The Peugeot 301 adopts the new design cues characteristic of the new Peugeots. The 301 is 4.44m long with a wheelbase of 2.65m. Compare that to the Ventos 4.38m length and wheelbase of 2.55m Boot volume is specified to be 506 litres.

The 3 cylinder 1.2 l VTi engine which makes 72 bhp will takes its place in the 301’s engine bay after its debut in the 208. Other engines on offer are the 1.6 l HDi 92 bhp diesel and the 1.6 l VTi 115 bhp petrol. The diesel is available only with a manual transmission.

ESP, ABS, up to four airbags, emergency braking assistance and ISOFIX ( the standard for fitting child seats in the rear) are the safety features on offer.

Peugeot 301 Headed To India 01Peugeot 301 Headed To India 04

Remote boot unlock, electronic climate control and rear parking assistance are the other features of convenience on the 301.

Peugeot has explicitly mentioned a number of markets where the 301 will be introduced after its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show and not surprisingly India isn’t mentioned there. Of course, this might have to do more with the fact that there isn’t an official Peugeot presence here yet and it might not reflect on Peugeot’s plans for the 301 in India.
