After the design sketches have been established, the Gran Coupe would have been modelled in 3D, and a real life size clay model formed, and painted over. Working with modelling clay is an art in itself, and we present to you pictures from the design process for the BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe.
In addition to the exterior designers, interior designers and a huge list of detail designers, there is also a team for ‘Form Finding’ that executes the computer aided styling using various software, and the sculpting of the real life size clay model using automotive styling clay.
Below we have pictures of Syrus Haghayegh, Ulrike Müller and Andreas Schinner, from the ‘Form Finding’ team working on the clay model.
Here’s Petra Aigner, Form Finding, working on the Gran Coupe rear. The seat surfaces and backrest of the rear seats are also modelled to exact specifications.
The clay model is then sprayed with ‘Dynoc Foil’ which gives the clay model the glossy finish a car deserves. The finish also enables the designer to spot imperfections in the surface.
The shut lines on the finished model are then taped with black masking tape that defines the shut lines visibly.
Sebastian Morgenstern (Detail Designer) and Nader Faghihzadeh (Exterior Designer of the BMW 6 Series Coupe) discuss details of the LED headlights
Finally, the model is presented to Adrian van Hooydonk (Senior Vice President BMW Group Design). Seen in the image below are Christian Bauer (Interior Designer BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe), Dave Carp (Interior Designer BMW Automobile), Oliver Heilmer (Interior Designer BMW Automobile) and Marc Girard (Head of Interior Design BMW Automobiles).
When is it coming to India? We’ll soon let you know.
