Rolls Royce Wraith Fastback 01

Bravo Rolls-Royce, bravo! When Rolls Royce put out the first of its teasers, the automotive journo fraternity uttered in hushed tones that the Wraith was a bit like a fastback, reminiscent of the iconic Bullit Mustang, in profile at least. It didn’t take us long to resort to a more dignified word like ‘Coupe’ to refer to the dropping line of the Wraith’s silhouette instead of the more brash word – fastback. Rolls Royce, in a very brave press release, has officially announced that the Wraith will be a fastback and has issued the final teaser image highlighting the strong lines of the Wraith. Rolls Royce says these are the three lines that underscore the car’s striking profile.

Giles Taylor, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Design Director explains:

” The purposeful fastback profile is Wraith’s defining element. Inherent in the graceful line that sweeps from the top of the screen to the very rear edge is the promise of fast, yet effortless touring. Yet, perhaps my favourite aspect is the expressive gesture that comes from the side window graphic, gliding through Wraith’s glamorous coach door.

It works with a strong sense of linear purpose from the shoulder line, which has the promise of potential like the athlete in the starting blocks. In contrast, the line that cuts through the shoulder line is a little more artful and adds that certain air of effortlessness to Wraith’s dynamic statement.

In my view the most successful designs always come down to three or four lines. ”

The teasers from #1 to #3 for your viewing pleasure. Rolls Royce did of course give us the bonus image of the clock in the third set of teaser images. Now we twiddle our thumbs waiting for March 5th, the first day of the 83rd Geneva Motor Show where the Wraith will make its official debut.

McLaren P1 Official Images 01

In the run up to its Geneva Motor Show debut, McLaren has been steadily feeding us with more information on the new flagship – the McLaren P1. The British marque has just released the performance figures for the 903 bhp/900 Nm torque machine.

Zero to 100km/h will take less than 3 seconds, zero to 200 km/h under 7 seconds, and zero to 300 km/h will be achieved in no more than 17 seconds. The top speed has been electronically limited to 350 kph.

While the car has largely remained unchanged from the design study presented at last year’s Paris Motor Show, McLaren points out that LTR ducts have been added just ahead of each of the front wheels to aid cooling and optimise downforce. The McLaren P1 will be priced at £866,000 and limited to a 375 unit production run. McLaren says everything on the car is standard and an options list as such does not exist. Any bespoke addition the customer may require will be handled by McLaren Special Operations.

McLaren has also revealed that the tyres fitted to the McLaren P1™ are specially developed P Zero Corsas, which have been developed with McLaren’s technology partner, Pirelli. The other bespoke component would be the braking system developed by McLaren’s Formula 1 partner Akebono, featuring a new type of carbon ceramic disc, which McLaren says has been used previously on in space! Stronger than conventional carbon ceramic, the material dissipates heat more effectively, giving the highly efficient braking system exceptional stopping and cooling capability. The system also is lighter than conventional carbon cermanic discs ( never thought we’d ever write a sentence like that!). The McLaren also flaunts a bespoke ceramic layer that coats both friction surfaces to give an attractive mirrored finish visible through the stunning alloys.

Ford Ecosport Yellow 01

Speculations about the Ford EcoSport continue to dominate the web. Autocar India has pointed out that Ford is heavily localizing components in the car to bring down the EcoSport base variant price to as low as in the region of Rs. 5 Lakhs.

At a price like that, expect the already in demand EcoSport to sell without so much as a sales pitch. Of course, while the base variant will be priced so low, expect the gap between that variant and the higher end variants to be substantial.

Let’s just hope Ford has learnt its lesson well from the new Fiesta. Bookings are expected to start by the end of March and deliveries are scheduled to begin in May or June, with the 1.0 L EcoBoost being fielded in the first round, to be followed by the diesel. With the kind of focus Ford has on the EcoSport, heavy localization and all that, expect this to be a KO round!

Ford Ecosport Europe 01

Nope. This wouldn’t be the first time Ford has launched a car in Europe at the Mobile World Congress which all things said is more about the gadgets than automobiles. The B-MAX was also unveiled in Europe at the 2012 Mobile World Congress. The compact and connected EcoSport will make its European debut at the 2013 MWC.

Ford’s in car voice activated system -SYNC- made its European debut last year on the B-MAX. This year, the EcoSport will be equipped with Ford SYNC voice-activated in-car connectivity system in addition to SYNC Emergency Assistance. SYNC Emergency Assistance dials local emergency services with accident location information obtained using the car’s on board GPS unit and mobile network (A-GPS). The system also delivers a voice message in the local language.

In addition to the new alloys on the EcoSport that we haven’t seen elsewhere, the Ecosport for Europe also retains the brushed aluminium finish on the scuff plate at the front and rear bumper. The test mules being tested in India have the black finish on the lower part of the bumpers. The tail gate mounted spare wheel also gets a not so good looking cover.

“We are entering the age of the connected car and debuting EcoSport at Mobile World Congress underlines just how important advanced vehicle technology is to customers and to Ford,” said Paul Mascarenas, Ford chief technical officer and vice president, Research and Innovation.

The EcoSport will be the first Ford vehicles in Europe to offer Ford SYNC AppLink, which enables customers to voice-control smartphone apps. A partnership with Spotify also enables occupants to listen to streamed music at least in the US and Europe.

“The role of the car is evolving,” said Paul Mascarenas. “Customers want to be able to safely enjoy the same level of connectivity in their cars as they would do at home, and SYNC AppLink enables then to do just that. By maximising the potential of apps, Ford can offer customers a class-leading range of smartphone app capabilities while on the move.”

The EcoSport in Europe will be powered by a 1.0 L EcoBoost making 125PS, and the 110PS 1.5 Ti-VCT Petrol and 90PS 1.5 L TCDi diesel we’ve seen in the new Fiesta in India. The powetrain options seem to be the very same being predicted for the Indian market.

KTM 350 SX-F 01

The KTM 390 Duke which was speculated to be launched at the Second KTM Orange Day has, as we speculated, not been launched. Mr. Amit Nandi, KTM India head unveiled the KTM 350 SX-F which he said will be sold through 17 KTM (erstwhile ProBiking outlets) outlets in India along with the KTM RC8!

KTM 350 SX-F 02

The 350 SX-F is powered by a 349.7 cc engine placed in a KTM-esque central tubular frame made from chrome molybdenum steel tubes. Unlike the 200 Duke sold in India, or the 390 Duke to be launched this year, the 350 SX-F gets a hydraulically operated clutch. The 350 SX-F hits the sweet spot for novice and intermediate off roaders who often find 250s not powerful enough and the 650s too heavy for off roading.

Hyundai 'Storm Edge' Santa Fe testing in India 01

Hyundai 'Storm Edge' Santa Fe testing in India 02Unveiled at the 2012 New York International Auto Show, the new Santa Fe embodies an evolution of Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design – ‘Storm Edge’ which embodies strong and dynamic images created by nature during the formation of a storm.

The 194 bhp 2.2L diesel engine with 422Nm torque will continue to power this generation of the Santa Fe. Transmission options include both automatic and the six speed manual, while both FWD and AWD configurations will be available. Expect a host of features to come loaded on the new Santa Fe.

Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), ABS with EBD, Brake Assist System (BAS) and 7 airbags should just about complete the list of safety features. Other features include Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), and Downhill Brake Control (DBC). There’s also the square shaped Xenon headlamp, DLRs, Keyless Start, climate control and a parking camera. The Santa Fe is reported to have one-touch-folding rear seats like in the new Honda CR-V.

This test vehicle was spotted by Padmaja Srinivasan, a BHPian.

World Superbike still produces good racing and that augurs well for 2013.  In the second race at Philip Island, victory went to Eugene Laverty, who finished second in the first race and Sylvain Guintoli on the other Aprilia took second place after having finished the first race as winner.  Marco Melandri on the Goldbet BMW prevented a second all Aprilia podium by fighting his way to third and denying first race third position man Michel Fabrizio.

Eugene Laverty was at one point demoted to third but he came back with stunning overtaking moves on Marco Melandri and teammate Sylvain Guintoli. Sylvain Guintoli led for the greater part of the race but had to surrender the lead to the hard charging Laverty. Marco Melandri did well to take third position after having been punted out by Carlos Checa in the first race.  Fabrizio took the fourth place.  Tom Sykes rocketed into the lead of the race on the first lap but soon himself found going backward thanks to his injuries. But he did fight back to finish a respectable fifth on the Kawasaki ZX-10R.  That makes it two fifth place for him at Philip Island despite his injuries.  His teammate Loris Baz who finished sixth in the first race was punted out in race two by BMW man Chaz Davies. While Baz had to be carried off on a stretcher, Davies who suffered a puncture limped to the pits had a tyre change and went back on to the race track only to be told that he had been given a ride through penalty and that ensured that he could only finish in last place, down two laps.

There is a long gap to the second race of World Superbikes due to the fact that the Indian round which was scheduled for March 10th has now been moved to November 17th as the season finale.  But if the first race is any indication then it is obvious that this season of World Superbike racing is going to be exciting and therefore something to look forward to.

The first of the major motorsports events for 2013 kicked off at Philip Island in Australia with the beginning of the World Superbike Racing series.  In the first of the two races, Sylvain Guintoli riding an Aprilia RSV4 Factory machine overcame a bad start to charge to the front of the field, in the process overtaking his more fancied teammate Eugene Laverty who led for a greater part of the race, to emerge the winner.  The Frenchman Guintoli who had to fill the big shoes of the petit Max Biaggi whose place he took in the official Aprilia entry made sure that his achievements will be considered good enough as a replacement for the veteran Biaggi who retired at the end of the last season as the reigning World Champion.  Eugene Laverty finished second in the race on the second of the official Aprilia entries.  The podium turned out to be an all Aprilia affair with Michel Fabrizio riding for the Red Devils Aprilia team fighting gamely for the second place before being beaten to the finish line by Laverty by a few centimetres.

Fourth place went to Chaz Davies riding for the Goldbet BMW Motorrad team now being run as the factory effort by the Italia BMW team.  Fifth and sixth went to the Kawasaki Racing Team’s riders Tom Sykes and Loris Baz.  Tom Sykes riding with a fracture to his right wrist and a couple of bruised ribs that he sustained when he fell in the preseason testing showed a big heart in holding on to fifth position while his teammate the young Frenchman Loris Baz riding in World Superbike for the first time at the Philip Island circuit rounded off the top ten.

The only significant crash that happened during the first race was when Carlos Checa on the brand new Ducati 1199 Panigale torpedoed Marco Melandri on the BMW S1000R and both were instantly out of the race while dicing for top positions.  While Melandri was up immediately after the crash, Checa lay still and was taken to the medical centre for check ups.  Now news of his condition has yet been given.

Prof.Dr. Thomas Weber (member of the Board of Management, Daimler AG and Head of Group Research, Mercedes-Benz Cars Development) hands over the key to Dr. Jens Cattarius (Managing Director and CEO of MBRDI) at the inauguration of Mercedes-Benz's largest R&D Center of Daimler outside Germany, in Bangalore.

Started in 1996 with 8 employees, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI) has grown to a 1200 strong workforce split between the new Bangalore facility and a satellite facility in Pune. More than ninety percent of the workforce is in the Bangalore facility which can accommodate more than 1800 employees.

Prof Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler AG and Head of Group Research, Mercedes-Benz Cars Development pointed out that MBRDI, in 2012 had over 50 patents for innovations in automotive development. MBRDI is the largest Research and Development center of Daimler AG outside Germany and contributes in the areas of Computer Simulation (CAE), Design (CAD), Electrical/Electronics and IT-Services. Mercedes-Benz points out that the Indian facility has been involved in some of Daimler’s cutting edge projects. Supporting Daimler’s vision for accident free driving, MBRDI has developing an testing a Human Body Modeling (HBM) simulation that takes into account most of variables in accident – biomechanics and physical properties of human tissues, accident statistics and the physics of crash situations.

The MBRDI team is also involved in the development of new cars at Mercedes-Benz. The integral seats of the newly launched A-Class and the seats of the new CLA are a few examples.
