Here’s the all new Maserati Ghibli shooting for an advertisement in the Dutch city of Rotterdam. Part of Maserati’s grand scheme to sell 50,000 cars by the year 2015, the Ghibli will be available with the choice of a 3.0 litre V6 gasoline engine or a 3.0 litre V6 diesel. The Ghibli take on the likes of the E-Class and the 5-Series and if the exhaust note and styling are anything to go by, sharpen your swords German executive saloons, the Italians are coming!

Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2012 A 250 08

It hasn’t been too long since the A-Class launched in Europe and Mercedes-Benz is already recalling more than 6000 numbers of the model in Europe. The A-Class was launched in Germany in September last year, while the European launch was a little later. While 6000 cars have been confirmed to have been issued recall in Germany alone, the number outside Europe is yet to be confirmed.

The issue, as with most recalls, arises from the supplier’s end, the result being that the passenger airbag would not deploy properly sometimes, in case of an accident.

Dr. Zetsche definitely would not have wanted this issue arising at this inopportune moment when Mercedes-Benz is to launch the A-Class in India tomorrow.

BMW continues to collaborate with some of the best design studios around the world to come up phenomenal design study concepts. This year BMW and Pininfarina presented the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupé, a new high end luxury coupe at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este this year. A one off creation, the Gran Lusso Coupe draws from design traits of the Italians as well as the characteristic traits of Teutonic BMW design. A long wheelbase, stretched bonnet, short overhangs and a set-back greenhouse with smoothly sloping roofline are all very BMW, while taut corners and stunning surface design are very Italian.

While the recent teaser images did hint at the design of the Coupe, the final form as unveiled today is so stunning, we are at loss for words.

Developing story..

Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team Lewis Hamilton Jet Ski 01

It should come as no surprise that Lewis Hamilton often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to media reports, specifically on stories that do not necessarily have much to do with the sport the British racing driver is associated with. Hamilton and Rosberg were being filmed jet-skiing at Monaco for a promotional feature. Swiss newspaper Blick Sport’s F1 correspondent Roger Benoit had written that Lewis lost his temper with a boat-load of photographers and executed a sharp turn spraying them in his wake, and that Mercedes had offered to foot the bill for damages alleged to be worth $150,000.

However, a Mercedes source has rubbished the reports. “The TV equipment is fine, as Sky themselves confirmed to journalists asking questions yesterday,” said the source.

“One photographer who failed to protect his camera equipment got some water inside it. But not specifically from something Lewis did. As he is a freelancer, we will make the goodwill gesture of helping to repair/replace the equipment,” he added.

While we make no claim to have the exact details of what happened, we cannot fathom why Lewis would lose his cool, especially when filming for a Sky TV feature. A situation not very unlike those, when sections of the media think it is acceptable to write in detail about Lewis’ on off relationship with Nicole or his strained relationship with his father.

Ford Broadmeadows Stamping Plant 01

Ford invested $20million in a stamping plant at the Broadmeadows facility

“Our locally made products continue to be unprofitable while our imported products, are profitable.” said Bob Graziano, President & CEO, Ford Australia in a statement to the media today, that laid to rest any doubts over speculations of Ford shutting its manufacturing facilities in Australia.

Ford Australia will shut its manufacturing facilities in Broadmeadows and Geelong, come October 2016. The Broadmeadows facility is a vehicle assembly plant, while the Geelong facility is an engine manufacturing plant. More than 1200 jobs will be lost, and as Graziano put it ‘we will work to maximize deployment elsewhere but realistically we believe those opportunities will be limited’.

He also pointed out that the cost of manufacturing was double that of Europe and four times that of Asia. ‘The business case simply did not stack up… manufacturing is not viable for Ford in Australia anymore’ he said. Ford Australia has lost close to $600 million over the last five years.

Ford has been manufacturing in Australia for close to 90 years now, beginning with the Model T in 1925.

The Ford Falcon’s last flight

Ford Falcon G Series 01

Ford G Series, of the Falcon range

The Ford Falcon, is a very Australian car that has a sizable fan following in the country. The Falcon is also Ford’s star in the Australian V8 Supercar Championships. When manufacturing in Australia ceases, Ford will also retire the Falcon brand. Fans have already come forward with their opinion that Ford could do a lot more than just retire the brand.

Ford Falcon Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series

Falcon sales have been on a downward spiral, but there was hope that a new Falcon would be introduced this year which could improve sales. While the Ford Falcon’s ‘arch nemesis’, the Holden Commodore will be launching the new VF Commodore Calais V sedan – Australia’s most technologically advanced car, they say – this year, Ford will soldier on with the existing Falcon until 2016.

Ford makes its announcement dangerously close to that of the new Holden VF Commodore launch

Ford’s announcement comes at an unfortunate time for Holden, which was supposed to be in the limelight this month with the launch of their new Commodore.

Toby Hagon, a journalist for the Fairfax Media Group was with Holden boss Mike Devereux in the new VF Commodore, for what was supposed to be a sneak preview for auto journalists when Graziano called to give Devereux a heads-up half an hour before the press conference.

Devereux has said that the timing of the announcement was regrettable and refused to comment further. Graziano has said that Ford decided to make the announcement three years in advance to enable a smoother transition for employees and suppliers.

Australia’s Prime Minister has come forward with an announcement that the Government will be providing $40 million assistance to local communities and $10 million to the component suppliers.

Further investment in Ford Australia’s R&D facilities

The Motor Report says last year, Ford Australia’s total investment in R&D was over $270 million dollars, bringing the company’s total R&D investment in Australia the six years to more than $1.9 billion. This happens to be the largest investment any car maker has made in Australia.

Ford Australia’s design centre at Campbellfield has played an active role in the development of the Figo and the EcoSport. More than 900 engineers and designers are employed by this facility, one of only three in the world. The others are in Cologne, Germany and Dearborn, USA.

Ford Australia will accelerate the introduction of new products in Australia following this announcement. If the number of Australian scribes at the recent media drive of the EcoSport in Goa is any indication, the Australians should be getting their hands on the EcoSport soon.

Bajaj Pulsar 375 2013 Spy Pics 1

The new Bajaj Pulsar 375 (supposedly) is a fully faired motorcycle expected to be powered by the KTM Duke 390 mill. While we expect the tank to be retained, the rest of the motorcycle should be visually very different from the Pulsar 200NS.

The perimeter frame will hold on to the 373cc single cylinder engine, while telescopic forks up front and monoshock at the rear will take care of the suspension duties.

While we expect Bajaj to continue to hang onto the centralized under the engine exhaust, we would love to see a more visually substantial exhaust.

The spyshots also show a R1-esque front with the projector headlamps while the fairing continues with the sharp edges worthy of a Pulsar.

Built to celebrate Aston Martin’s 100 years of excellence in motorsports, the CC100 is inspired by the 1959 Le Mans and Nürburgring winning race car DBR1. The CC100 was unveiled at the Nurburgring by Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez as he drove a celebratory lap around the ‘ring. Accompanying the CC100 will be the legendary 1000km race-winning 1959 DBR1 as well, driven by Sir Stirling Moss himself, the same legend who piloted the DBR1 during its 1959 victory. The CC100 is powered by the AM11 naturally aspirated V12.

The team that was given the brief to design a concept inspired by the DBR1 but still hinting towards the future of the Aston Martin brand, was lead by Director of Design Marek Reichman and Chief Exterior Designer Miles Nurnberger. The essential elements of the DBR1 that had to be distilled into the CC100 was the open cockpit, two seats, uninhibited driver vision and flowing exterior lines that form a smooth aerodynamic form.

Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez said: “CC100 is the epitome of everything that is great about Aston Martin. It represents our fantastic sporting heritage, our exceptional design capability, our superb engineering know-how and, above all, our adventurous spirit! I have nicknamed it ‘DBR100’ because of its affinity to the great 1959 race-winning cars and, of course, our 100-year anniversary in 2013. But this car is more, even, than a simple ‘birthday present’ to ourselves: it shows that the soul of Aston Martin – the thing that differentiates us from all the other car makers out there – is as powerful as ever and I very much hope that everyone who catches a glimpse of it at the Nürburgring today enjoys seeing it.”

The interior had to be suitable for a true track car yet had to be as luxurious as Aston Martin’s road cars. A unique weave of lightweight carbon fibre was used to provide structural rigidity. The CC100 has racing seats with full safety harness but these are clothed in the finest Bridge of Weir leather. The control buttons and the distinctive ECU starter buttons are all glass as seen in the road cars by Aston Martin model.

It would also seem Aston Martin has chosen to use leather handles to open the doors instead of conventional door handles to save weight. The interior also sport the proud ‘Q’ customization badge. The 100 Years celebration logo of Aston Martin is seen on the exterior as well as the interior.

Body, Powertrain

Aston Martin employed low volume specialists Multimac to craft the exterior and interior in carbon fibre. The CC100 is powered by the AM11 naturally aspirated V12 gasoline engine mated to a six-speed hydraulically actuated automated sequential manual transmission. The transmission is controlled using steering column-mounted paddle shifts.

Having sold over one million units of the current generation BMW 5 Series Sedan, BMW 5 Series Touring and BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, you’d think the Bavarian would sit back and relax, but no. Mid life cycle face lifts are the norm, and the new 5 Series is no exception. Subtle changes to the design, new engine variants and new additions to the equipment increase the desirability quotient of this executive sedan. The new 5 Series also gets the Modern Line and Luxury Line packages, and of course the M Sport package.

Powertrain

The new BMW 5 Series powertrain options for the sedan and touring include four petrol and six diesel units ( including the BMW M550d xDrive Sedan and BMW M550d xDrive Touring). The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo has two petrol power plants and three diesels.

The new 5 Series Sedan and Touring will be available in a be a new entry level variant, the 518d. Powered by a four-cylinder diesel with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, this mill makes around 105 kW/143 hp.

All the 5 Series models meet EU6 norms that come into force in September 2014. The diesel models come with nitrogen oxide-reducing BMW BluePerformance technology as standard.

BMW EfficientDynamics technology now also includes a coasting mode, which disengages the powertrain to reduce fuel consumption. Proactive Driving Assistant can adjust the car’s speed ahead of a change in speed limit, and the ECO PRO Route function are new additions. Meanwhile, extensive optimisation of the cars’ aerodynamics – the drag coefficient (Cd factor) of the BMW 520d Sedan, for example, has been reduced to 0.25 – is one of the key factors in the latest advances made by the engineers in the area of efficiency.

All wheel drive is available with the 520d Sedan and Touring variants increasing number of xDrive variants of the Sedan to
eight and that of the Touring to seven.

Of course, there is as always a high performance petrol, the new V8 unit with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology developing 330 kW/450 hp.

Mahindra Compact SUV S101 Front

The S101 pictured here is Mahindra’s take on a compact SUV designed from ground up. While the Quanto seemed to be nothing more than a shrunk Xylo,at least superficially, the S101 has been developed from the scratch.

The proportions of the S101 are expected to much better than that of the Quanto. What interests us most is the bench seat up front, which will enable the S101 to seat three people up front. The gear lever has been moved up to the dashboard enabling this arrangement.

The S101 will in all probability be powered by the same 3 cylinder 98bhp 1500cc turbocharged engine from the Quanto.
