Lamborghini Crossover Invite

CAR magazine has posted the official invite to Lamborhgini’s Crossover unveiling at the Beijing Motor Show. The SUV/Crossover’s silhouette on the invite is the first official confirmation of a Lamborghini Crossover. Whoa. We’ve come a long way since 2007. In this video Lamborghini’s Stefan Winkelmann denies any plans for an SUV, but the rumour mill must have generated that much interest in a possible Lamborghini SUV, that Winkelmann has decided to go ahead.

The Urus will be built on the same platform as the Volkswagen Group’s other premium SUVs from Audi, Porsche, VW. The Urus will be be powered by the Gallardo V10 tuned to produce 584 horsepower.

Nico Rosberg, Mercedes AMG Petronas : 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Photo 02

The Mercedes AMG Petronas team just sent us a press release stacking fact upon fact regarding their Chinese Grand Prix victory. As the team put it, there are days when the stars simply seem to align and everything comes together perfectly. Sunday in Shanghai was one of those days. Nico Rosberg won his first Grand Prix at his 111th attempt – 111 years (and three weeks) after the first ever Mercedes took victory at the 1901 Nice Speed Weeks. This year alos marks exactly three decades since Nico’s father Keke became world champion in a season that, just like 2012, saw three different winners of the first three races.

Nico Rosberg also joins the hall of fame of eight drivers who have now won Grands Prix at the wheel of a works Mercedes-Benz: Manfred von Brauchitsch, Rudolf Caracciola, Luigi Fagioli, Juan Manuel Fangio, Hermann Lang, Stirling Moss and Richard Seaman.

Limiting the list to just those who’ve won in a Formula One Grand Prix, since the start in 1950, just three men have this honour: Fangio, Moss and Rosberg. Nico’s win was the 10th for a works Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrow in F1. It was also the first victory for a German driver at the wheel of a Silver Arrow since Hermann Lang won the 1939 Swiss Grand Prix.

Mercedes AMG F1 W03 joins an even smaller club, becoming the sixth Silver Arrow car to take Grand Prix victory. It follows the tradition of the W 25 (used through 1934, 35 and 36), the W 125 (1937), W 154 (1938, 39), the W 165 voiturette (1939 Tripolis Grand Prix) and the W 196 (1954, 55).

Whew.

Nico Rosberg

“This is a very special moment for me. The whole weekend went perfectly. My first pole position, now my first win in Formula One – it really is fantastic. But it’s not only this; it’s the first win for the new Silver Arrow and for this great team. That is really special for me. Thanks to everybody in the team, here in China and in our factories in Brackley and Brixworth. It makes me very proud that we have improved the car so quickly. I will never forget this race, and the last 20 laps felt as long as if I was racing in the Le Mans 24 Hours! But then crossing the line was so intense. We will enjoy this success, but our feet are still on the ground. We are still not where we want to be, we are still working hard to understand the car and the tyres in all conditions, and we will keep pushing to improve our race pace even further. We will see how that works out in Bahrain.”

Michael Schumacher

“First of all, congratulations to the whole team, to Mercedes-Benz and of course to Nico who achieved a perfect victory from start to finish. He did a great job today and yesterday, and I am happy for him. As for my race, my right front tyre got loose following my first pit stop. As I did not want to cause any bigger damage to the car, I stopped on the grass. I felt there was something wrong immediately and especially in turn three, when I put pressure on the right side of the car. Up until then I had a controlled race I’d say, keeping the others behind me and the tyres together. Of course, this was an unfortunate ending to what could have been a nice race, and I feel sorry for the guys, who always work so hard and give their best. But we all know that’s part of the game.”

Ross Brawn

“This is a truly special and historic day. I am so delighted for Nico, he has deserved to take his first victory several times, and has now done so by driving a perfectly judged race from pole position. I am excited to see how he develops now he has that win under his belt. Commiserations to Michael, who was driving a controlled race in second position, but was forced to retire after his pit stop. However, he is the first man to say that we win and lose as a team, and his performances this year prove that he is equally capable of climbing to the top step of the podium. Heartfelt congratulations to all our team here at the track, in Brackley and in Brixworth; they have put tremendous effort into this project, and we are now starting to see the rewards for their dedication and expertise. Finally, I must thank all our colleagues at Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart and around the world – their support has been unstinting, and we are proud to deliver the first victory for a works Silver Arrow car in 57 years. I was just one year old when Juan Manuel Fangio won in Monza in 1955 – but this victory is something I will remember, and savour, for a very long time indeed!”

Norbert Haug

“What a sensational victory from Nico and our team! It was unbelievable how Nico drove and controlled the race from lap one to 56. A big thank you to everybody in Brackley, Brixworth, Stuttgart, Fellbach, Untertürkheim and Möhringen for all their relentless work and their belief in our capabilities and that we can make it. Nico’s performance was superb today, the team executed a great two-stop strategy, and Nico and his car managed the tyres very well. It was a shame for Michael, who dropped out after his first pit stop because of a problem with the right front wheel; he missed out on a possible very good podium result. It was particularly sweet to see Jenson and Lewis on the podium – Mercedes Power to the power of three!”

Jenson Button, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Photo 04Lewis Hamilton, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Photo 05

Button thinks a smoother pit stop might have helped him get ahead of traffic and catch up with Nico, while Hamilton thinks he might have put up a good fight if he had started from the front row. Martin Whitmarsh doesn’t entirely agree, thinks Nico Rosberg deserves his victory.

Jenson Button

“Congratulations to Nico [Rosberg] today – he drove a faultless race. But who knows what we could have achieved if we’d had a clear run at him in the final stint? Our pace was very good and the aim was to come out ahead of that following pack of cars – which we would have done if we hadn’t lost time in the pitstop – and chase him down and put him under pressure.

“The delay in the final stop was just one of those things though – all the other stops had been very strong this weekend, but that one in particular wasn’t. The delay pushed me back into the traffic, which was a little bit of a shock, but the pace and consistency are there in the car and I was able to get back into second position, after a good battle and a satisfying pass on Sebastian [Vettel].

Jenson Button, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Photo 01

“It’s disappointing not to have been able to challenge for the win, but it was a fun race with tons of overtaking and lots of battling. More important, it’s been a great day for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes because we’re now leading both world championships.

“It’s very important to be consistent, and it’s nice to be back on the podium, but there are just a couple of little things we need to improve upon to make life even better for ourselves.”

Jenson Button, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes, 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Photo 03

Lewis Hamilton

“I had a great race! And, although neither Jenson nor I was sadly able to win, I’m really happy that Nico took his first win today, but I’m also really pleased for the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team: both Jenson and I were able to get back on the podium and score some more good points.

Hamilton signs autographs for fans at Shangai International Circuit Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix 02

“It was a tough race, though: I’d love to have been able to challenge Nico, and I think maybe I’d have been able to if I’d started on the front row, but we still managed to move forwards from the start I had a lot of fun overtaking people too. I reckon I got everything out of the car that I possibly could.

“It’s also a major positive to know that we’ve got a very consistent car. We just have to make sure we keep moving forwards, that’s all. Mercedes AMG, Red Bull, Ferrari, Lotus and Sauber are all up there – that’s a serious championship and it’s going to make for great racing for the fans to watch.

“It’s been a while since I was at the top of the drivers’ world championship – but we’ve got to remain focused. I think if I just continue to work as I am then the wins will surely come, and I’ll keep pushing for some better results in the future.”

Martin Whitmarsh, Team Principal

Martin Whitmarsh, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes 2012 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix

“It was a tough race, but our strategy resulted in both our drivers getting onto the podium. Accordingly, we extended our lead in the constructors’ world championship, whilst Lewis and Jenson now lie first and second in the drivers’ championship.

“Would Jenson have been able to beat Nico if his final pitstop had gone more smoothly? Well, obviously, he’d have lost less time in the pitlane, and undoubtedly he’d have re-emerged onto the track with a clearer road in front of him; but, in all fairness, today was Nico’s day, and we may not have been able to beat him even if Jenson’s final pitstop had been an impeccably slick one.

“So, yes, at his 111th attempt, Nico fully deserved to win today.

“We’ve had three Grands Prix so far this year, and they’ve been won by three different drivers from three different teams. The performance differential between the fastest cars is minimal. It looks like we’ve got a great season ahead of us, doesn’t it? Bring it on!”

Again, the Duster was spotted by an IAB reader Gokulraj who caught on camera a white and a black Duster. Both models spotted seem to be base variants since the rear bumpers is not the aluminium finished one we’ve seen on the Red Duster.

Mercedes Benz Concept Style Coupe Beijing 03

This is either the CSC, CLA or simply Mercedes-Benz’s idea of a compact sedan. Can you actually peel your eyes off it? We cannot.

The Concept Style Coupe, CSC will be unveiled to the world at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show and will be powered by a 208-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine seen in the A-Class hatchback. The CSC is expected to be built on Mercedes’ new MFA platform. It is also rumoured that the production version of this concept will be given the name CLA.

How unfair would it be that you can get the most good looking car from the Mercedes-Benz stable at a price point lower than any Mercedes Benz sedan in the market? Not very unfair, if you ask us.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Plant Oragadam : BharatBenz

In the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamilnadu J. Jayalalitha, and members of the Daimler AG Board of Management, DICV inaugurated its state of the art plant in Oragadam built over an area of 160 hectares. The plant has been completed in a record 24 month period and will also house the integrated research and development center and the state-of-the-art test track. Daimler says the plant is one of only three Daimler truck plants worldwide to combine truck assembly and components production at one location. The total investment of DICV is 4400 Crore Indian Rupees (over €700 million) including the manufacturing facility for BharatBenz brand trucks as well as research and development.

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars

Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, explained, “Our new Oragadam-Chennai plant shares Daimler’s stringent quality standards with its sister plants around the world and is unique at the same time. It is the only Daimler plant in the world that houses products which combine Indian engineering with German and Japanese DNA under a single roof. This way, we are optimally positioning ourselves for one of the world’s strongest and fastest-growing truck markets.”

The start of production of the BharatBenz heavy-duty trucks are scheduled already for the 3rd quarter of 2012. The plant in Chennai has an initial production capacity of 36,000 units per year and is designed to allow an increase up to more than 70,000 commercial vehicles per year. Some of the BharatBenz trucks are based on the Mercedes-Benz Axor platform, whereas some on the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter platforms.

Bharatbenz Unveiling at Hyderabad : 2523Bharatbenz Unveiling Hyderabad 1217

The huge investment by DICV in India is justified by the numbers presented by Daimler. The company says the modern domestic segment, which accounts for four percent of all trucks in India, is expected rise to almost 80 percent by 2020. With a product portfolio of 17 BharatBenz commercial vehicles by 2014, DICV is preparing for the promising Indian truck market with a volume of more than 330,000 vehicles in the weight classes of 5 to 49 tonnes in 2011.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles has pulled out all stops in India, and intends to localize 85% of components to benefit from the expanding market in India. Marc Llistosella, CEO and Managing Director of DICV, declared, “Filled with pride and joy, I dedicate today’s plant opening to the employees of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles. Our work-force is primarily Indian and has steadily increased to include more than 1,400 employees today. Our focus on localization has resulted in more than 40 percent of our suppliers being located within a 40-kilometer radius of the plant. Overall, our BharatBenz trucks will have a localization rate of 85 percent in India.”

DICV cooperates with over 450 suppliers who were selected after stringent quality and due diligence tests. In cooperation with local car and commercial vehicle dealers, DICV has built up a nationwide retail network that will encompass around 70 locations by the end of 2012. The retail network will be expanded to more than 100 dealerships by 2014.

Andreas Renschler, Daimler Board of Management member responsible for Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses, emphasized at the plant inauguration in India, “DICV is an outstanding example of Daimler Trucks’ Global Excellence strategy. Our worldwide production network and our global research and development efforts enable us to develop, manufacture, and sell trucks in India, for India. We do all of this in close proximity to our customers, for our customers.”

The Daimler subsidiary Daimler Financial Services will offer financing and insurance products for dealers and customers in support of BharatBenz vehicle sales.

Good times ahead for DICV, we think.

Audi RS Q3 to be presented at the Auto China 2012 in Beijing Photo 01

Audi will present RS Q3 concept at the Beijing Auto Show. Powering the concept is the 2.5 TFSI that combines two classic Audi technologies – gasoline direct injection and turbocharging. From 2,480 cc of engine displacement, it generates 360hp of power. 0-100 in 5.2 seconds and it has a top speed of 265 kph.

A seven-speed S tronic transfers power from the engine to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive. Thepower is transmitted almost exclusively to the front wheels. When slip is detected there, the quattro can redistribute forces to the rear axle via a hydraulic multi-plate clutch with electronic control – instantaneously and variably.

Audi RS Q3 to be presented at the Auto China 2012 in Beijing Photo 03

The single-frame radiator grille is trimmed with brushed and polished aluminium. A distinct 3D effect is brought about by offsetting the honeycombs to one another. A silver quattro signature takes its rightful place in the lower part of the grille.

The headlights are slightly tinted; inside them, some chrome parts are dark or covered by panels of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP). The bumper has been redesigned with powerful edges around the outer air intakes. The front spoiler is also made of CFRP. Its lower section is matt black. The entire lower section of the bumper is coated with blue clearcoat paint.

The roof spoiler runs a long way towards the rear; its middle section has been slightly shortened compared to its outer sections. It is painted in the body color Ordos Blue – a matt blue with a slight yellow tint. At the rear, the lower bumper section has a sporty and angular style. The diffuser insert, which integrates the two large elliptical tailpipes in typical RS look, has been shifted far upward. Again here, Audi designers chose a combination of blue clearcoat and black CFRP. The rear lights and auxiliary lights in the bumper are tinted in anthracite and are made of clear glass.

The alloy wheels of the Audi RS Q3 have high gloss front surfaces while the sides are sandblasted.

The blue black theme continues inside with black Fine Nappa upholstery in contrast with Dark blue Alcantara. In the tachometer, Chinese characters replace the usual Arabic numerals. RS Q3 badges adorn the instrument cluster, the seatbacks, door sill plates and floor mats.

Celebration time people!

More details have emerged and the announcement of the official launch date, April 23rd has dampened our spirits. We think the celebration was a bit too hasty. A launch this soon could only mean a hasty botox job and nothing more. The new Apache will primarily be an end of life facelift. While the faux carbon fibre accents and tricolore stickers on the tail piece are visible in these images, the mechanical bits are expected to remain the same. We shall refrain from any further comments until the launch which is anyway, just next week.

This was the content of the post before the details leaked.

There’s a new Apache to be unleashed soon. There have been no whispers yet about this beast, the market has been radically changed thanks to entrants like the Duke 200. We wonder what TVS has in store for us.

The Pulsar 200NS is also expected to be launched this month, so we would like to repeat ourselves – Celebration time people!
