Mercedes-Benz will launch the stylish new M-class on 15th May at an ex-showroom, Mumbai price of around Rs 69 lakh reports Autocar India.

Mercedes-Benz ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC in India

The five seater will count on its stunning looks, and class leading mileage to lure customers. The new generation M-Class engines have been downsized, turbocharged to offer more power and better fuel consumption. Using the new tool called ‘energy transparent vehicle’ various components of the M-Class have been optimized to offer the best possible mileage. The ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC powered by Mercedes-Benz’s new 2.2L four cylinder diesel engine makes 204hp and can travel 1170 kilometers on a 70 litre single tank! With the optional 93 litre tank, you can travel 1500 km before refueling.

Alas, this sought after engine might not make it to India initially. Overdrive reports that this engine requires diesel cleaner than available in India.

The most probable engine would be the 258 horsepower 3.0L V6 that will power the ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC. Fuel efficiency hovers around 14.7 kpl in the New European Driving Cycle. Top speed of 224 kph and 0-100 kph in 7.4 seconds figures have been claimed.

There is also the 3.5L BlueEFFICIENCY V6 petrol engine that makes 306 horsepower which may never see the light in India.

All these engine options have been mentioned counting on the fact that Mercedes-Benz WILL offer the latest generation engines.

The steel suspension of the M-Class chassis now includes selective damping. Active roll stabilisation in the form of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM can be combined as on option with AIRMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) as well as with the ON&OFFROAD package.

If the ON&OFFROAD package is made available in India, you also get an underride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres in addition to six transmission programmes modes different terrains.

rSeries : 4 updates to Mercedes-Benz’s new M-Class to be launched in India on the 15th of May 2012

The “energy-transparent vehicle” development tool, created in-house by Mercedes-Benz, was piloted as part of the M-Class development process. Mercedes-Benz says this method, which can detect the possibilities for optimisation in even the most minute component, will be exploited on all new model series in the future. An exact and meticulous examination of the flow of energy throughout the vehicle (tank to wheel) helps the development engineers to optimise every single assembly that has an impact on fuel consumption, right down to individual components, such as wheel bearings.

Mercedes-Benz ML 350 BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC in India

Since it was not possible in the past to verify or demonstrate clearly the many factors affecting consumption and the interaction between fuel-saving measures, the clever folks at Mercedes-Benz developed this tool. Using the “energy-transparent vehicle” tool, the engineers can now detect detailed potential optimisation measures by breaking down energy flows into cause and effect and analysing energy interactions within the entire vehicle.

The process draws on complex, highly precise metrology which records some 300 energy-relevant measurement points with a sampling rate of up to 1000 measured values per second. Every minute some 2.4 million measured values are generated, which can subsequently be analysed to reliably pinpoint optimisation potential. The process is complemented by energy simulation models which are validated by means of the measured variables. This enables the energy efficiency of individual major assemblies and components as well as the entire vehicle to be analysed and quantified.

Once the engineers have identified a component that isn’t functioning as efficiently it should, they team up with the relevant specialist departments to devise solutions. This cooperation focuses on design, or the properties of the materials used in individual vehicle components such as wheel or axle bearings. In addition, modified control strategies can also produce the desired outcome.

The “energy-transparent vehicle” process which is exclusive to Daimler enables the development engineers to highlight and leverage optimisation potential both for cars with conventional internal combustion engines as well as hybrid, electric or fuel-cell drives.

In future, this process may even give rise to a generally applicable development tool for all machines and help boost energy efficiency across the board. A wide range of applications are conceivable. Whether in industry for power stations, (wind) generators, pumps or conveyor systems, in the home for refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and lawnmowers, or for transportation applications involving ships, trains or planes – the optimisation potential of disparate technologies to save energy could be analysed in detail with the consistent usage of this technique and implementation recommendations made.

Mercedes-Benz M-Class for 2012 : 07

The new M-Class has a new headlamps that come with the optional Intelligent Light System (ILS). The LED daytime running lamps are set in chrome inserts integrated into the bumpers. A deeper, broad, chrome-effect underguard continues down from the lower edge of the characteristic radiator grille, with the prominent three point star in the middle. Characteristic of the M-Class is how no pillar is visible in the transition from the rear side window through to the rear windscreen. The rear is defined by the bumper, which features an integrated chrome-effect load sill guard in a new “wing design”, the two-part rear light unit with LED fibre-optic technology, and the lowered roof with its large roof spoiler. As befits a product of its class, the M-Class has lots of chrome finish including the roof rails, the beltline trim strip and the load compartment handle, to mention a few.

Engines

In the ML 250 BlueTEC, the 3.0-litre V6 of the previous model is replaced by the thrifty 2.2L four-cylinder EU6-standard unit that makes 204 hp and 500 Nm torque. This is one of the cleanest diesels i nthe world now with a NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) fuel efficiency of 6.0 L /100 km or 16.67 kpl. 0-100kph in 9 seconds and a top speed of 210 kph.

The ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC uses a completely reworked 3.0-litre V6 engine, which also more than meets the EU6 emissions standard and delivers far better performance, yet with considerably reduced fuel consumption ( around 14.7 kpl or 6.8 l/100km NEDC). 0-100kph in 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 224 kph.

Mercedes-Benz borrows from AMG’s use of the innovative TWAS (twin-wire-arc spraying) technology. This cylinder wall coating technology reduces internal friction in the engine significantly. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 4.3 kg, as there is no longer any need for the grey cast iron cylinder liners that, until now, had to be pressed into the engine block. The benefits are striking: with these measures alone, fuel consumption could be reduced by around 3 percent.

Mercedes-Benz ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC in India

In the ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY petrol engine model, you’ll find the 3.5L V6 BlueDIRECT the third-generation direct petrol injection system with spray-guided combustion and new piezo injectors that have an injection pressure of 200 bar, together with fast, multi-spark ignition and a new stratified combustion process. The results are 306 horses, 370 Nm of torque and a claimed NEDC fuel efficiency of 8.5 L per 100km or 11.7kpl. 0-100kph in 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 235 kph.

Twin turbocharges ( one low pressure, one high pressure) connected in series, ensure the new engines produce more power at lower fuel consumption than predecessors.

Mercedes-Benz also has for the first time used a technique developed in-house, something it calls the ‘energy transparent vehicle’ where an exact and meticulous examination of the flow of energy throughout the vehicle (tank-to-wheel) helps the development engineers to optimise every single assembly that has an impact on fuel consumption, right down to individual wheel bearings.

Aerodynamic Efficiency

With a drag coefficient, or Cd value, of 0.32, the new M-Class (ML 250 BlueTEC) also sets a new best figure for this vehicle class. The key factor determining the low wind resistance is the aerodynamic efficiency of the basic bodyshell, including the optimised design of the front bumper with its integrated spoiler, of the A‑pillars and of the roof spoiler, plus numerous other detailed improvements. Sealing around the radiator section, sealed joints between the bonnet and the headlamps, front wheel spoilers, air outlets in the front wheel well liners are some of the design changes up front that improve aerodynamic efficiency. Redesigned exterior mirror housings, Optimised roof spoiler and side spoilers on the rear window, underfloor and engine compartment panelling are the others. The side spoilers on the windows are exclusive to the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC. The diesel models also get aerodynamically optimised light-alloy wheels.

Stunning fuel efficiency numbers

Mercedes-Benz says, the ML 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC with the revolutionary 2.2L BlueTEC engine, can cover 1170 kms with a 70 litre tank, tick the optional 93-litre tank, the massive SUV can even cover up to 1500 kilometres between refuelling stops!

In addition to the ECO start/stop function that comes as standard, measures implemented to achieve excellent fuel efficiency include the new seven-speed 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with a new fuel-economy converter, friction-optimised bearings and a transmission oil thermal management system. Low-friction axle drives, electric steering and tyres with low rolling resistance also play their part in reducing fuel consumption.

Mercedes-Benz ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC in India : Rear

The optimised belt drive system with decoupler, together with on-demand control of all ancillary components and pumps, also helps to reduce the energy requirements of the new M-Class. The oil and water pumps in the engine, as well as the fuel pump in the rear section of the vehicle, are only activated according to actual need. The same control logic is used in the THERMATIC and THERMOTRONIC air conditioning systems. In these, the coolant compressor only runs when necessary. A key factor in the diesel engines is also the optimisation that has been undertaken of the flow and counterpressure in the exhaust system with its SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) emission control technology.

Its no secret that vehicles seem to put on kilograms with each generation, thanks to the increase in safety systems emplyed. An intelligent use of lightweight construction techniques has enabled the development engineers to stop the steadily increasing weight spiral. The control arms of the front and rear axles, for example, as also the bonnet and wings, are made out of light and yet very strong aluminium alloys, while the cross member for the instrument panel is made of magnesium.

Transmission

The re-engineered 7G-TRONIC PLUS, standard on all M-Class models, boasts an integrated ECO start/stop function, even lower converter slip and optimised efficiency. There’s a new torsion damper, which eliminates torsional eccentricities and vibrations in the transmission even more effectively.

The lower the rpm and the lower the number of cylinders, the more severe these can be. With Mercedes-Benz concentrating on downsizing its cylinders for this generation of the M-Class, there’s a conflict between comfort and fuel efficiency. Mercedes-Benz developers resolved this by using a so-called twin-turbine damper, which is also fitted with a centrifugal pendulum on the diesel models. Depending on the rpm, this moves the centre of mass and allows comfortable operation even in the most economical operating range. Furthermore, the optimised damping allows a marked reduction in the slip of the torque converter lockup clutch even under low loads, which also contributes to fuel savings. The optimised damping of rotational irregularities and vibrations in the transmission allows an even faster response to driver commands via the accelerator pedal.

Suspension

For the first time, the steel suspension of the M-Class chassis now includes selective damping. During normal driving on only moderately uneven roads or during slow off-road driving, the system responds with a soft ride that enhances the occupant comfort as well as the car’s off-road capability. When you decide to go wild in the corners, the suspension adapts and works hard.

The ML 350 BlueTEC 4MATIC and ML 350 4MATIC BlueEFFICIENCY get the off road programmes as standard. To improve traction, the slip thresholds and shift points of the 7G-TRONIC PLUS system have been raised, a flatter accelerator pedal curve improves the sensitivity with which the driver can accelerate, off-road ABS ensures optimum braking on a loose surface. Start-off Assist and the HOLD function are further features helping the driver to pull away on a slope. Downhill Speed Regulation, or DSR, enables the M-Class to maintain automatically the speed set via the cruise control lever.

The new M-Class also features the ON&OFFROAD package that features six transmission modes:

Automatic – covers most everyday driving operations
Offroad 1 – light terrain, dirt roads and tracks
Offroad 2 – challenging off-road terrain with hilly stretches
Winter – for driving in wintry conditions on slippery roads, on snow, ice or with snow chains
Sport – more adventurous, dynamic driving on winding roads
Trailer – optimises moving off, manoeuvring and braking with a trailer

Mercedes-Benz ML 350 BlueEFFICIENCY 4MATIC goes off roading

When you opt for the ON&OFFROAD package you also get an underride guard, a two-stage transfer case with reduction gear, a longitudinal differential lock and enhanced AIRMATIC functionality that allows a maximum ground clearance of 285 millimetres and a fording depth of 600 millimetres.

Active roll stabilisation in the form of the ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM can be combined as on option with AIRMATIC air suspension with Adaptive Damping System (ADS) as well as with the ON&OFFROAD package.

0 to 100 km/h is dispensed with in 4.3 or 4.2 seconds, speeds of 200 km/h are achieved in 12.9 or 12.6 seconds depending on whether you opt for the AMG Performance package. Electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h which increases to 300 km/h with the AMG Performance package on board. Fuel efficiency is claimed to be 30% better than the predecessor, with a figure of 10.1 kpl.

The V8 powerplant codenamed M 157 features a combination of innovative high-tech components for high power output and relatively low fuel consumption. In addition to spray-guided direct petrol injection, the engine also has an all-aluminium crankcase, twin turbochargers, four valves per cylinder with camshaft adjustment, air/water intercooling, alternator management and an ECO start/stop function. The weight-optimised AMG sports exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes produces a distinctive engine sound.

Lightweight Construction

As with the SL 63 and AMG’s own SLS AMG, the SL 63 AMG uses a lightweight aluminium bodyshell which makes it 125 kgs lighter than its predecessors. The kerb weight of the SL 63 AMG is pegged at 1845 kilograms.

Mercedes Benz SL 63 AMG for 2012 Profile

Intelligent lightweight construction also means that the components have been optimised for their function. Aluminium sheets are used in varying thickness, and castings are now processed as extruded sections. The result is high rigidity, high safety and improved vibration characteristics. For the cover behind the fuel tank, the designers use even lighter magnesium material in some cases. High-strength steel tubes are integrated into the A-pillars for safety reasons. The boot lid ‘s inner support is made from lightweight carbon-fibre composite. The extremely rigid carbon-fibre component is bonded to the plastic outer shell, resulting in a weight saving of five kilograms compared to a conventional boot lid!

Suspension

The steering knuckles and spring links on the 4-link front suspension and almost all of the multi-link independent rear suspension components are made of aluminium. The reduction in unsprung masses enhances both agility and the response of the spring and damper components.

The new SL 63 AMG is equipped with an enhanced version of the AMG sports suspension based on Active Body Control as standard. The Sport mode dishes out exceptionally sporty characteristics with reduced roll angles and firm body damping whereas the Comfort mode allows more comfort-oriented settings. The SL 63 AMG has more negative camber all round and fully revised elastokinematics for better agility.

The new, electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering, the flagship AMG model translates to exceptional feedback at the critical limits. The steering has a constant and more direct ratio, and variable power assistance which adjusts in line with the suspension settings. 3‑stage ESP® is available that is exclusive to AMG with “SPORT Handling” and there’s also the AMG rear axle differential lock and AMG performance suspension from the AMG Performance Studio.

Transmission

AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission has four modes to select from: “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual).

In “C” mode, the ECO start/stop function is active at all times and switches off the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. The gear changes are early, and smooth. Second gear is generally used as the starting gear in this mode.

The engine and transmission are far more agile in “S”, “S+” and “M” mode; in addition, the stop/start function is deactivated. Mercedes AMG says faster gearshifts have achieved by partial suppression of the cylinders, explained further as ‘briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load’. AMG says this also translates to fantastic engine sound. An automatic double-declutching function for downshifting and the RACE START function are also included as standard with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

Newly developed AMG high-performance compound brake system features 390 x 36 mm compound discs with six-piston fixed callipers at the front and 360 x 26 mm integral discs with single-piston floating callipers at the rear. An electric parking brake is fitted as standard, while options available from the AMG Performance Studio include red-painted callipers. Ceramic braking system is also available as an option.

First in season testing for the 2012 MotoGP season at Estoril cancelled owing to bad weather

The test  session at Estoril was intended for riders to test not only new parts, but also to confirm certain set-up choices. Heavy downpours resulting in poor visibility and unfavourable track conditions has led the governing bodies to cancel the test sessions on safety grounds. A meeting will be held between the teams and Bridgestone to discuss possible alternatives for the test to be carried out at a convenient time elsewhere.

Image Courtesy: Yamaha Factory Racing Team

First let us get the news bit out of the way, before we start talking about the controversies that hit the World Superbikes paddock at Monza.  While the Superstock and Supersport races were run almost normally, the Superbikes races had problems.  The first race was cancelled due to track conditions being unsuitable to racing since for most of the weekend there was rain.  The drying and wet conditions combination was something about which some riders complained and finally when the skies opened up it was decided that it was unsafe to race and therefore the first race was cancelled.  Then the second race commenced but ran only for eight laps before the deluge hit again and Race Direction thought it prudent to end the race after the eight laps and only half points were awarded to the winner Tom Sykes on the Kawasaki ZX10R and the other podium finishers Leon Haslam on the BMW S1000R (in second place) and Eugene Laverty on the Aprilia RSV4 who finished in third place.

Now for the controversies.  Pirelli was at the centre of it with some of the teams claiming that the tyres provided by the Italian tyre maker were sub par and that the centre of the tyre was beginning to melt in the drying conditions.  Pirelli’s rebuttal was simple.  It said there were two kinds of tyres available for the said conditions and that the teams refused to take Pirelli’s advice on which was more suitable for the conditions and therefore the problem arose.  In the paddock however not too many people have been buying this argument with some of them claiming that it is easy to say these things after the problems had surfaced and that things would not have been too different even if the other compound tyres were chosen.  The second controversy was the one created by team Liberty Effenbert Ducati who had secured pole position with their rider Sylvain Guintoli on the Ducati 1198R.  Their claim was that the cancellation of the first race and the truncating of the second race were done by Race Direction which came under pressure from some teams and riders.  The team claimed that people who had come to spectate had been cheated of their money and favouring some teams meant that at a sporting level other teams (such as itself) had suffered and lost an opportunity of victory.  The team runs a very large operation in World Superbike Championship with presence in almost all categories.  The team then went to say that under the given circumstances it will reconsider its participation in the series.  World Superbikes loss turning into MotoGP gain?  Probably not, it could just be letting off some steam.

Meanwhile Tom Sykes wins but yet again in the wet and not in the dry though he was leading by nearly 10 seconds over second placed Haslam.  This must be more bitter than sweet for Kawasaki and Sykes who will be desperate to prove that they can win races even in normal conditions.  BMW will have to wait for some more time before they get their first victory in World Superbikes.  Series leaders Carlos Checa and Max Biaggi maybe a bit relieved, especially the former since he was sure that he would lose massively on points at Monza given the unsuitability of the Ducati to the high speed circuit that favours four cylinder engined bikes.

Casey Stoner Repsol Honda Team 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal At Estoril 05Dani Pedrosa Repsol Honda Team 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal At Estoril 06

At the Grand Prix of Portugal of the 2012 season of MotoGP, Casey Stoner took his second successive victory of the season with team mate Dani Pedrosa again joining him on the podium with a third position.

Today Casey today took his 42nd win in all classes in Grand Prix racing equaling the record of Max Biaggi and Tony Mang. After his win in Estoril today, Casey has now won at every circuit on the current GP calendar.

This podium has also been very special for Dani because with this third place finish, he joins an elite club of riders with 100 career podiums to their name. Only six competitors have achieved the milestone before Pedrosa: Valentino Rossi (175 podiums), Giacomo Agostini (159), Ángel Nieto (139), Phil Read (121), Mike Hailwood (112) and Max Biaggi (111). In addition, at just 26 years of age he is the second youngest, after Rossi to reach this milestone.

Casey Stoner, Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda Team 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal At Estoril 04

Casey’s victory has given Honda it’s seventh win out of thirteen races in the premier class at the Estoril Circuit. The Australian rider attacked hard from the beginning, setting an incredible first lap of 1’42.369 which put a one second gap between him and Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa. The current World Champion led every lap of the 28 lap race and maintained a high pace for the duration with Jorge and Dani also riding consistently in the 1’37’s.

The Repsol Honda riders have been on the podium, together with Lorenzo, in all three races held so far this season. Today, Casey also takes the lead in the World Championship standings with 66 points, followed by Lorenzo with 65 and Dani in third with 52 points.

The team remain in Portugal for a one day test tomorrow in preparation for the next GP, at Le Mans in two weeks.

Casey Stoner

“In the end it was another fantastic weekend for us. This morning we were more confident but also a little concerned because yesterday afternoon when we had a very similar setting to FP3 the bike was a little bit worse in the warm conditions. In warm up we didn’t have a big problem with chatter but then for the race, under the warmer conditions, we struggled a lot more. This was very difficult to ride with, in the first part of the race I was confident and attacking the track but I closed the front twice due to the chatter. From this point I backed of a little, tried to stay smooth and just wanted to stay in front of Jorge and Dani, but Jorge was coming strong. I had to try and keep my pace and not make too many mistakes, I was changing the mapping to try and reduce the chatter problem. Towards the end of the race I began to understand how to ride around it, this made things smoother and I found some more pace and was able to bring it home for a great race win”.

Casey Stoner followed by Dani Pedrosa, Repsol Honda Team 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal At Estoril 03

Dani Pedrosa

“It’s been a really tough race from the beginning, the pace was very very high from the first lap to the final one. Casey did a good race, unbelievably strong. I had a big shake in the first braking area, Casey and Jorge overtook me and I lost 1.5 seconds on the first lap. During the race I had some issues in the middle of the corner, I was not fast with corner speed; each lap I tried to get a little better, to try and modify my riding style, the mapping, braking later, I tried everything, I managed to match the lap times but not to close the gap. Three races on the podium is very good overall, but in three races we missed something, so let’s try it again in the next one. To reach my 100th podium is amazing and shows how fast the time goes. I’m very happy for that and I want to thank all my teams and sponsors during this time and especially Honda because I’ve been with them for my whole career”.

Nicky Hayden & Valentino Rossi, Ducati Team : 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal at Estoril 09

The Portuguese Grand Prix saw the Ducati Team improving with Valentino Rossi. After two days of working on his GP12’s settings, the Italian lapped at a pace that was both relatively fast and very consistent, eventually finishing in seventh place, which is his best result of the season so far.

Nicky Hayden, on the other hand, had to just try make it to the finish due to an electrical problem with his bike’s ECU, which was subject to interference from a radio signal near the track. As a result, all of the electronic calibrations were out of phase around the circuit, making riding extremely challenging. The American nonetheless rode with great determination to an eleventh-place finish.

Tomorrow the Ducati Team will remain in Portugal for a one-day test, with hopes that the rain forecasts turn out to be wrong so that development can continue on the GP12.

Valentino Rossi Ducati Team : 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal at Estoril 07

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 7th

“It went a bit better this time, in the sense that we started from a better base on Friday and we managed to prepare for today over the course of the weekend. I was able to approach the race knowing what to expect from the bike, and I therefore managed to push harder and get a little closer to the limit. The first laps were decent. I moved up a couple of positions and then I maintained a consistent pace, doing times that we expected to do. We can say that we took advantage of our current potential, and now we’ll have to work to make another step forward. We must improve on corner exits and on acceleration because right now we’re not able to be as effective as the others due to the fact that we can’t get all of the power to the ground. We have a test tomorrow, and we’ll start working. Anyway, today I even managed to have some fun.”

Valentino Rossi Ducati Team : 2012 MotoGP Grand Prix Of Portugal at Estoril 08

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 11th

“Starting from the first lap, there was an electrical problem and the bike didn’t know where it was on the track. I tried my best to ride around the problem and not make mistakes. It’s really a shame to work hard all weekend but not be able to take advantage of it with a result in the race. The team did a great job overnight, and I felt so much better this morning in the warm-up. I almost matched my qualifying lap and was pretty consistent. Of course I’m not saying I was going to fight for the win, but it would have been nice to at least have a decent race. We’ll focus on tomorrow’s test now and look forward to the next race at Le Mans.”

“We managed to work well this weekend, taking full advantage of our dry track time to improve the setup and confirm that we now have a good base setting. Today Vale rode the whole race at close to the same pace as his qualifying time, he made some nice passes, and he was able to push a bit closer to the limit. I think this is a good starting point. We’re really sorry for Nicky because during the race, a radio signal interfered with our ECU’s transponder, forcing him to ride with the electronic calibration out of phase. Riding in those conditions is truly difficult, and he did a great job to finish the race.”

Just two races into its comeback season, BMW is back on the top step of the DTM podium: 19 years, six months and 25 days after the last triumph, Canadian Bruno Spengler at the wheel of the BMW Bank M3 DTM, crossed the finish line at the Lausitzring in first place.

BMW’s last victory in DTM was by Italian Roberto Ravaglia who claimed the brand’s 49th victory in the DTM on 11th October 1992 in Hockenheim. It is notable that the team back then that brought the victory was BMW Team Schnitzer, headed by Charly Lamm, the same combination that has brought BMW’s 50th victory today.

Briton Gary Paffet finished second in the second race of the 2012 DTM season at the Lausitzring. After the first two races of the season, Paffett leads the drivers’ standings with 43 points from Jamie Green who is second with 30 points. Mercedes-Benz also leads in the DTM manufacturer championship with 96 points to BMW’s 54 points and Audi’s 52 points.

Right from the first lap, BMW drivers Spengler and Farfus were involved in a thrilling duel with Mercedes’ Paffett and Jamie Green. Spengler defended his lead at the start and then held onto his position at the front of the field, thanks largely to excellent work by BMW Team Schnitzer during the two pit stops.

Quotes

Bruno Spengler (car number 7, BMW Team Schnitzer, 1st place):

“Today is a dream come true for me. I am so happy I just want to give everyone at BMW Team Schnitzer a big hug. That was a perfect weekend for me: the first DTM pole position for BMW for 20 years, then the first victory since 1992. This is one of the best days of my life. The race was unbelievable. We had a really tough battle with the Mercedes drivers, and did everything in our power to stay in front of them. Thankfully it worked. The final lap was the longest of my career. My team and I did not put a foot wrong today. That was definitely the crucial factor. One thing is certain: it is time for a celebration.”

Augusto Farfus (car number 16, BMW Team RBM, 3rd place):

“Congratulations to BMW for doing a great job and giving us this car. This is only my second DTM race and we are a very young team in the series. That makes it all the more amazing to finish on the podium at the second race. I feel really great. I had a difficult time in Hockenheim, but we have recovered brilliantly. One week later, this was a very different performance. I am very happy to be able to bring the car to the finish without any mistakes even though I had Jamie Green pushing me for a lot of laps. But I just made sure I stayed calm and made no mistakes. Thanks also to BMW Team RBM for two fantastic pit stops.”

Charly Lamm (Team Principal, BMW Team Schnitzer):

“This is simply fantastic. The DTM is so challenging and the bar has been set so high. Despite this, however, we first claimed pole and then clinched the first victory in only our second race – that is indescribable. It was an unbelievably exciting race. Bruno was consistently under pressure and could not afford to make a single mistake. It is sensational what he did out there. He has nerves of steel. I said in the past that it would come down to stability, strategy and pit stops. That was the case today, and it all worked perfectly for us. Thanks not only to Bruno, but also to every single person in the team. This success is the reward for the hard work they have put in in recent months.”

Gary Paffett (THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Second:

“It’s such a pity. My THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé had enough speed to win again today. I was just a bit too far behind at the pit-stop. Having said that, my car was really quick and had a brilliant set-up, a tribute to the team. I was also so close to Bruno Spengler’s car that I was losing a bit of down force. However, I did give it my all and being second on the podium within the space of a week is a great result for us, especially after the win in the opening race.”

Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), Fourth:

“My Mercedes-AMG C-Coupé was just terrific today. Augusto Farfus drove a fantastic race. I was behind him most of the time, but despite the great pace of my car, I couldn’t get past. Now the focus of my attention has to be on my home race at Brands Hatch where I’m hoping to get back on the podium again.”

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“Both Gary and Jamie had the speed to secure P1, but at this track it is not enough to simply go faster to be able to overtake. Gary started the race from third place, a mere 0.043 seconds adrift of pole position. He immediately moved up one position as the race began but was subsequently unable to get past the rear of Spengler’s car, which he was then forced to follow for about 50 laps.”

Ralf Schumacher (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 10th:

“Our C-Coupé was pretty quick today. The car performed flawlessly and the same applies to the strategy and the pit stops. This enabled us to progress from 16th to 10th place. If I can get a better grid position in the next race, I’ll hopefully not get stuck in traffic and be able to compete with the front runners.”

David Coulthard (DHL Paket Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 12th:

“I had to be careful at the start of the race not to collide with any other cars and make sure my car wasn’t damaged. I gave it my all and got the best possible result. I just couldn’t have managed any more than that.”

Susie Wolff (TV Spielfilm Mercedes AMG C-Coupé), 21st:

“I had a bit of a disappointing race. Straight after my first pit stop I realised that there was no way I could make any great progress in the race. I’ll just have to draw a line in the sand now and look to the future.”
