Fiat Panda Monster 02

If you weren’t convinced by the Panda 4×4 , Fiat has built for you a Monster Truck in collaboration with Mercurio Cinematografica, set designer Andrea Faini and the Fabio Gementi Workshop to highlight the off-road performance of the Panda 4×4.

Fiat borrowed a Jeep CJ7 4200 floor panel from their friends at Chrysler and fit road tractor wheels shod with “High Speed” tyres, 150 cms in diameter and 50 cm wide. The ‘bigfoot’ Panda, is 390 cms tall, 380 cm long and 250 cm wide. Fiat says this prototype was built in two weeks.

Fiat has put out a video (minus the audio) of the Panda Monster Truck that can be found on YouTube. Come 2013 and we should probably see this video on television as a full blown ad telling the story of four friends who set off for a weekend in the mountains. The Panda 4×4 will be the star as you would expect and will be shown transforming into a Monster Truck to climb up to the hostel.

The Midnight Sale is the start to Ford’s month long ‘December Dhamaal’ campaign.

As with previous midnight sales, various benefits are being offered on the Ford models.

The midnight sale is bigger this year with gifts worth Rs. 3.5 crores for the taking. All customers who book a Ford on December 5 will get a chance to win assured gifts such as LED TVs, washing machines, home theatre systems, microwave ovens and more.

Customers can drop in at any Ford from as early as 8.00 in the morning and as late as 12.00 midnight on 5th December 2012.

The Macan will be smaller than the Cayenne and will be based on the Audi Q5 chassis with changes to make it more Porsche.

The Macan will play a very important role in Porsche’s Strategy 2018, the intention of which is to expand Porsche’s model line up. The site in Leipzig ,Saxony is being expanded into a fully-fledged production plant including body assembly line and paint shop. The 500 million Euro investment is one of the biggest building projects in Porsche’s corporate history. Porsche also says this will create 1000 new jobs.

The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013.

A three door version, and a hybrid shouldn’t be too far down the line.

Three cylinder engines are generally harsh and noisy, a problem we automotive enthusiasts like to brush under the rug with the blanket label we call ‘character’ of the automobile. The ones that are tolerable have a counter-rotating balancer shaft to cancel out the vibrations. This additional component makes the engine heavy, expensive and in general less efficient. Ford decided not to have a counter balancer. Auto journos who have driven the 1.0 litre EcoBoost powered Ford Focus ( Indian journos drove the 1.6 Flex Fuel powered EcoSport in Brazil) have come away stumped at the smoothness and quietness of the 3 cylinder mill. How did Ford pull this one off?

The thing about engines with even number of cylinders, say a four cylinder engine is that for every piston at the top dead centre of the cylinder about to change direction, there’s another piston at the bottom in another cylinder also about to change direction. In a three cylinder you have three cylinders firing unopposed and if we may say so unabashed. Without the balancer shaft, the NVH levels would test occupants tolerance to the limit.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost’s NVH engineering team, led by Andy Delicata at Ford Technical Centres in Dunton and Dagenham, England, worked to solve the problem by using an unbalanced front pulley and rear flywheel. The pulley and flywheel have weights placed precisely to counteract the ‘natural shaking forces’ of the engine. In addition to this, the engine mounts are designed to decouple as well as absorb the engine’s shaking forces, Delicata explained.

The result is one of the smoothest and quietest engines in Ford’s global lineup says Ford. “We like to compare the refinement of the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine with what you would typically experience in a vehicle two or three classes up from Fiesta and Focus,” said Delicata.

New Ford Fiesta with the 1.0 liter EcoBoost production begins

Now that the issue of vibrations were dealt with the other task was to ensure the noise levels were kept to the minimum. We’ve spoken at length about how compact the 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine is. The footprint is said to be as big as a sheet of A4 sized paper and is compact enough to fit into hand luggage. Ford opted to use a highly stiff cast-iron block structure and an integrated engine mounting bracket which are highly effective in absorbing noise energy. Ford engineers have also immersed the engine’s toothed rubber timing belt in oil to reduce noise during operation. Isolated fuel injectors are electronically controlled for ‘soft landing’ and a foam-covered engine collectively help keep noise and vibration from reaching the driver.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine also features a new compact, high performance turbocharger design. The extremely fast response of the turbocharger and its ability to reach nearly 250,000 rpm results in virtually no turbo lag and peak torque of 170 Nm. The all-new EcoBoost engine also features an exhaust manifold cast into the cylinder head, which lowers the temperature of the exhaust gases and in turn enables the engine to run with the optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band. An advanced “split cooling” system reduces fuel consumption by warming the engine more quickly. Opting for cast iron instead of aluminium has also reduced the amount of energy needed for warm-up by up to 50 per cent compared with aluminium.

The thing about technology is that while factors like efficiency and cost matter, the ultimate deal breaker is acceptability by the masses. In our opinion, acceptability comes with the extent to which the change is imperceptible. Give the people a 1.0 litre three cylinder that gives them as much performance as a 1.6 four cylinder yet delivers astounding fuel efficiency, while ensuring all the while that the customer forgets the fact that he is driving an EcoSport/Focus/Fiesta that is powered by an engine that plays host to a large number of the latest Ford innovations, and you have a winner already.

Michael Schumacher : Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, Chinese GP 2006

How does one start a tribute to Michael Schumacher without mentioning the record seven world championships, 91 wins, 68 poles, 1,560 points and most wins (13) in a season (2004) ? While the Ed has extensively discussed The Curious Case of Michael Schumacher we thought it only fitting that we take a trip down memory lane and relish those glorious ‘Schumi’ moments that have won him unwavering fans all over the globe.

7 Championships
91 Wins

Knockout 90s : With Benetton & Ferrari

Stepping into a Team 7UP Jordan car in 1991 at Spa, and stepping out into a Benetton at Monza having caught the eye of Benetton boss Flavio Briatore, Michael Schumacher began scripting his chapter in the annals of Formula 1. His first win was in 1992 at Spa, in the Benetton powered by a Ford V8, beating the far superior Williams’ cars of Nigel Mansell and Ricardo Patrese which were powered by the exemplary Renault V10s.

Schumacher’s legendary driving stints might be many but none so dear to a fan as the Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya, Barcelona in 1994. Oh yes, that GP where the Benetton refused to change from fifth and Schumi drove a good part of race stuck in fifth gear. Of course it is still debated whether he had first gear without which some say it would have been impossible to exit from pits.

The other biggest win in 1994 was at Monaco where Schumacher won with a massive lead of 37.278 seconds over Martin Brundle. The traffic makes for some exciting racing.

Rainmeister

Who can forget the 1995 Belgian GP? Starting from 16th, Schumacher goes on to win the race! There’s this most fantastic part of the race where the rain starts falling, Damon Hill swaps to wet weather tyres, Schumi decides to stay on slicks and watch the most entertaining race unfold with Hill trying his best to overtake Schumacher in vain!

1996 saw Schumacher perform another incredible feat in his first season at Ferrari by winning in a Ferrari which, to quote my Ed ‘was firing on anything between 7 and 9 cylinders out of the ten, in the rain at Barcelona and won himself the tag of Rainmeister’.

1997 saw another masterclass in driving in the wet. Schumacher started 2nd held his place and finished the race first, nearly 53.306 seconds ahead of Barrichello.

The Hungarian Grand Prix of 1998 saw Schumi at his fiercest best. Ross Brawn decided the only way to win the race was to bring in Schumacher early into the pits. Catching on to the strategy, Ron Dennis brought in then race leader Mika Hakkinen into the pits. By the time Hakkinen pulled out, Schumacher was in the lead already. Trouble was, the McLarens of Hakkinen and Coulthard could run to the end of the race, but Schumacher would have to pit. Schumi put in lap after consistent lap pulling ahead of the tailing McLaren duo enough to pit once more and pull out 5 seconds ahead of the McLarens behind him!

The driver triumphed

Newey vs Schuey

To quote from the Ed’s article again, ‘Michael Schumacher won his first world championship in an unfancied Benetton car that was running a Ford V8 engine while the all conquering Williams cars were running Renault’s exemplary V10 units. His second world championship had the Renault unit behind him but the definitely inferior Benetton chassis under him. Yet he won again. So the world said Formula1 was a Newey vs Schuey contest, where the genius of a car designer was pitted against the genius of a car driver. The driver triumphed.’

Damian Dinning

Damian Dinning loved two things as a kid – cars and photography. In his own words ‘With regards to the latter, I wanted to be able to take photography from the nerdy or for special occasions only use it was at the time, to being part of everyday life.’ Which is exactly what he did with arguably three of the best smartphone cameras in the market – the N8, PureView 808 and the recently launched Nokia Lumia 920.

For a multitude of reasons, Damian Dinning has now seen it fit to pursue his other love – cars. In an exclusive statement to the PureView club, Damian Dinning said “As for my future, I am moving to an industry I’ve wanted to be part of for a very long time. My experience in telecoms and smartphones provides me with a great opportunity to make a difference in a company whose own development is inspiring at a time of great change. I am thrilled that I’ll shortly be joining Jaguar Land Rover where I’ll take a role driving future innovations in the exciting new field of Connected Car.”

Jaguar Land Rover has always been at the frontlines with its infotainment system and with Damian Dinning it can only get better.

Remember the bucketloads of fun Jeremy Clarkson had with the Surround Camera System of the Range Rover?

More than just the scope for improvement of existing systems in JLR products, it is the ‘shiny’ new innovations that could take their place in JLR products courtesy of Dinning that have us in a frenzy. Dinning’s crowning achievement has to the PureView 808, with its 41 megapixel sensor. Who would’ve thought that even remotely possible? Yet it was done and a long look at the PureViewClub samples should give you an idea that there just doesn’t seem to be anything impossible with the 808. There have been often repeated comparisons of the 808 images with those from DSLRs and we can only imagine what the mind behind all that could do given the blank canvas of a Range Rover or an XJ.

Audi Classic Chronograph WristwatchWhile we understand you’d rather read about Audis with wheels, we could point out at least two regulars at Riot Engine who might have a word or two about this ‘Made in Germany’ Classic Chronograph wristwatch priced at Rs 21,499. The watch is available only in Black and as Audi says, ‘Crafted with perfection in design & engineering’. The chrono also has a date display, double stop function, tachymeter scale for measuring speed, with the internals being Swiss Ronda 5020.B quartz movement. It is water resistant to 5 atm.

‘A large chunk of luxury car buyers expect their accessories to reflect their style statement along with their car. To cater to this need of discerning luxury enthusiasts, we have a range of Audi Accessories that are in line with our motto of sportiness, sophistication and progressiveness. Etched with four rings insignia, the Classic Chronograph wristwatch testifies progression in our growth story in India and reiterates our commitment to offer Indian customers a comprehensive product range to meet their luxury needs’, said Mr. Michael Perschke, Head, Audi India.

That’s a little too much optimism, if we may say so Mr. Perschke. We’d guess the discerning Audi customer in India would rather splurge on the £1,500 Audi Design Square rather than the 21,499 rupee Classic Chrono simply because the former is much more expensive. There’s a better chance that you would see the Classic Chrono on my wrist while I’m zipping through the city on my Pulsar 220!

Burn_250ml_can_simplified_2

Well not the iconic brand in red itself, but Coca-Cola’s global energy drink ‘Burn’, available in more than 80 countries throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America will feature on Lotus Renault E21. More information to trickle through in 2013,
all we know now is that this will be a multi-year sponsorship deal.

Emmanuel Seuge, Group Director, Worldwide Sports & Entertainment Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company : “The creativity of teams and the passion for speed and energy that fuel the sport of Formula 1, make a partnership with this iconic sporting property a compelling proposition for the burn brand. Lotus F1 Team, as the number one emerging challenger in the sport, has demonstrated exceptional creativity in their approach to Formula 1 racing and their collaborations with partners – an approach that mirrors the philosophy of burn. We will bring that same creativity through burn, incorporating art and music in a way that will break the conventions of traditional Formula 1 sponsorship marketing.”

Eric Boullier, Team Principal, Lotus F1 Team : “We are proud that The Coca-Cola Company has chosen Lotus F1 Team as the best vehicle to represent the burn brand in its most high profile partnership. Harley Davidson Fat Bob Launch India 01

The newest addition to Harley Davidson’s Dyna family in India, the Fat Bob has been launched in India as a CKD ( completely knocked down ) unit. This is the sixth CKD from Harley Davidson India giving one additional box to tick for the Indian motorcycle enthusiast.

The Fat Bob is a Fat Bob thanks to the really wide front end with the 49mm tubes and 130mm section tyre, and the signature bobtail fender at the rear. The twin headlamps up front just beneath the triple clamp swathe this Dyna with more attitude than any other Harley in the Dyna family.

Harley Davidson has unfortunately decided to power the Fat Bob with last year’s Twin Cam 96 engine shared with the rest of the Dyna family in India while internationally the Fat Bob gets the newer Twin Cam 103. It makes perfect business sense considering the Twin Cam 103 engine would throw the benefits of CKD right out the window. It’s just as well, as more than one reviews have pointed out that one of the weaker points of an otherwise fantastic street brawler is the lack of feel at the front braking lever and lack of bite at the rear. ABS offered on the Fat Bob should make braking less terrifying. Just as many reviews have also pointed out that the relatively compact wheelbase makes changing direction and ultimately handling fantastic on the Fat Bob.

The air cooled Twin Cam 96 engine delivers max. torque of 126 Nm @ 3500 rpm of peak torque. The 1585 cc engine is mated to a six-Speed Cruise Drive transmission providing smooth, quiet shifting and reduced engine speed on the highway, so you get better road speed at lesser revs. Unlike the other models of the Dyna family, the Fat Bob gets the ‘Tommy Gun’ 2-1-2 exhaust which Harley Davidson says increases exhaust flow to provide heart stopping performance, signature Harley-Davidson rumble and big style.

Mr. Anoop Prakash, Managing Director, Harley-Davidson India said “Along with being an ideal motorcycle for India attitudes and roads, the introduction of the Fat Bob®, our newest addition to our lineup available through CKD, is further proof of our ability to move ahead of the marketplace by listening to our customers. The launch of the Fat Bob® as CKD will allow more customers to experience our Dyna range at an attractive price point. At Harley-Davidson India, we will continue to adopt and invest in strategies that make our products and ownership experience accessible to more enthusiasts and customers in India.”

Now we sit and twiddle ours thumbs waiting for Polaris India to bring home the Victory Judge, which seems to have had the Fat Bob in its sights right from the get go, maybe right from the moment the Victory’s designers first laid pencil on paper!

The daytime running lamps seem to have become more sinewy with lots of texture. The shape retains the new age E-Class design language. Expect full LED lighting as an option at least. The new Mercedes Benz E-Class is also expect to get a new front face, although little indicates any changes to the interior.
