rSeries : 7 updates to Karun Chandhok at the 24 Hours of Le Mans: Updates, Results

Audi SQ5 TDI

Oh. That’s a shocker. While the automotive enthusiast fraternity tries in vain to catch up on as much as sleep as possible in anticipation of the 24 Hours of Le Mans to start in a few hours, Audi unveiled the SQ5 at Le Mans today! The first S model with a diesel engine, will sprint to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds while average fuel efficiency consumption claimed to be 13.89 kpl or 7.2 liters per 100 km. Top speed is claimed to be 250 kph.

The 3.0 litre TDI, which displaces 2,967 cc, uses a twin-turbo design in which the two turbochargers are connected in series via a flap. Cylinder head cooling, the timing and lift of the intake cam shafts, the pistons, their oil-jet cooling and the piston pins have been specially designed for the high-performance concept. The common rail system develops as much as 2,000 bar of pressure and injects as many as eight shots of fuel into the cylinders per cycle.

Audi says the sound of the 3.0 TDI biturbo is enhanced using a loudspeaker in short side channel. Is that literally a loudspeaker?

The sport suspension lowers the vehicle body by 30 mm. The standard 20-inch wheels feature a five parallel-spoke design and are fitted with 255/45 tires. Audi offers optional wheels measuring 21 inches in diameter. The black brake calipers on the front axle sport S badges. The optional Audi drive select system can be expanded upon request to include the dynamic steering system with its steplessly variable steering ratio.

JRM Racing at the Qualifying of the 2012 FIA WEC : Le Mans

JRM Racing makes it debut at Le Mans with the Honda HPD ARX-03a driven by the trio of Karun Chandhok, David Brabham and Peter Dumbreck. The team is in the good hands of Nigel Stepney, chief engineer and team manager.

JRM Racing will start 11th on the grid after their best qualifying time of 3:35.421.

The practice session went well for JRM with David recording the team’s best time of 3:34.641, before handing over the wheel to Karun. Karun reported some instability on the rear of the car on his second run and ran wide into the gravel on the first corner. Peter Dumbreck posted the team’s fastest time of 3:37.088 in the Qualifying Session 1. Karun had another mishap, this time at Tertre Rouge when he drove over some debris and the car was in the air momentarily. Upon landing back on track, the gearbox cracked. This meant the team has to swap the gearbox, and they decided to swap the engine as well, which they would have to anyway do on race day. This would give the team more time on race day for further optimization.

This meant the team has to skip out on Qualifying Session 2, but Peter Dumbreck made up for the lost time, posting a 3:35.421 in Qualifying Session 3 which puts the team 11th on the grid.

The LMP1 Honda Performance Development ARX-03a is powered by a specially designed and tested 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine. The ARX-03a is currently hailed as the most competitive petrol Le Mans Prototype around.

Driver & Team Quotes

David Brabham
I didn’t go out in the car today as I completed more laps yesterday, so it wasn’t a major issue. It’s been a positive practice session as we put all the race gear in and made some changes that have given us a better direction for the race. We’ve come a long way already – I’m sure we can still make some headway before the race.

Karun Chandhok
Yesterday I hit some debris through Tertre Rouge and the car felt like it took off. We didn’t know until we checked thoroughly overnight but the impact of coming back to ground cracked the gearbox. The team then decided to change the engine, which was pretty logical considering we were changing tomorrow anyway. Although I would have liked to drive tonight, I’m just looking forward to getting behind the wheel at my first Le Mans on Saturday.

Peter Dumbreck
It’s been a tough day with a fair few issues but we always knew that as a rookie team in the top class it was going to be that way. The team acted very professionally to get through all the changes and condense the programme into the final session. It will be good to have the day’s break tomorrow to fully understand the information we have and how we can make the most of the race.

Nigel Stepney, chief engineer and team manager
It’s a great feeling to qualify for our first-ever Le Mans. This being our debut, we knew there could possibly be some hitches so we took the precaution of having all our drivers do a minimum of five laps yesterday evening. As it happens this worked out well as we lost the earlier session when we changed the gearbox and the engine. Although we’re not 100% on the set up just yet, clearly our goal has got to be getting to the end and seeing where we are at the finish.

Karun Chandhok Jrm Racing 02

Motorsports as a business is expensive and unforgiving. Nobody knows that better than Karun Chandhok. Having spent the better part of last year commentating and testing Karun realized that he needed to be racing somewhere to keep his career on the move. When JRM Racing boss James Rumsey mailed Karun asking if he would be interested in driving the JRM HPD LMP-1 prototype in the World Endurance Championship, with David Brabham and Peter Dumbreck for team mates, Karun jumped on board.

Karun Chandhok Jrm Racing 01

Karun is already making an impression in WEC with his usual affable and charismatic personality. Oh and the 8th place finish in the second round of the WEC at Spa helped too! Stephen Errity from the l’endurance magazine says ‘..Chandhok is one of a new breed of sportscar drivers helping to drive enthusiasm for this once-neglected brand of the sport.Undoubtedly fast, comparatively young, and eager to build a long and successful career in the WEC, he fits right in the relaxed yet highly professional environment of 21st century endurance racing.’

Quite an impression Karun has made, and he hasn’t even been in the WEC for that long. Riot Engine wishes this lad from Chennai the very best!

Karun is racing the JRM Racing LMP1 Honda Performance Development ARX-03a powered by a specially designed and tested 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine in the WEC. The ARX-03a is currently hailed as the most competitive petrol Le Mans Prototype around.

What of Karun’s career in Formula 1, the ‘pinnacle’ of car racing?

“A lot of people have asked me whether I have “given up on F1?” and the answer is NO. F1 is, was and always will be the pinnacle of our sport. I never give up on anything but what I have accepted is that unless you have the right financial backing at the moment it is almost impossible to get a full time race seat with an F1 team. As I said before, I got in this business to RACE and I’m loving this new challenge ahead – it’s time to fulfil yet another dream at Le Mans!” he wrote in a column for BS Motoring

If you’ve found yourself here after having sifted through numerous sensationalized reports online that say ‘Diesel Cars To Become Dearer By 2.55 Lakhs!’ or that you ought to ‘Be prepared to increase your budget by 2.55 lakh rupees!’ take a moment and breathe.

Oil Minister S Jaipal Reddy has written to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee demanding a hike in the price of diesel cars. This is only a proposal, and Heavy Industries Minister Praful Patel has already opposed the Oil Minister’s proposal, while CNBC-TV18 reports that their sources in the Finance Ministry say they aren’t in favour of the proposal either. The Oil Ministry cannot impose higher excise duty on diesel cars, if the increase in prices do occur you’ll have the Finance Minister to thank for it.

The ‘scientific’ calculations that have helped the Oil Minister arrive at these magic numbers are pretty simple. Considering a mileage of 18 kpl for small diesel cars and 12 kpl for medium-sized cars, the benefit extended to these cars works out to Rs 1.70 lakh for a small diesel car and Rs 2.55 lakh for the medium sized car. The revenue that the Government will get from a hike in excise duty will be only Rs 5,000 crore while the subsidy on diesel leaves the Government poorer by Rs 100,000 crore at the current diesel subsidy of Rs 12.53 per litre.

“Countering the effect of one distortion by creating another distortion is neither good economics nor good politics,” said S Sandilya, President, SIAM this week before meeting with the Government on Wednesday. “The only meaningful way to reduce price differential between petrol and diesel is to offset the huge imbalance that has changed the demand pattern in the Indian passenger car market” he added today.

Mahindra Rodeo RZ unveiled 03

Mahindra flew us down to Mumbai to test their latest offering, the new Rodeo RZ. The first monsoons had washed the city in the morning, the results being very slippery roads. But the rains had just stopped by the time my flight landed in Mumbai, and for brief moments even the sun shone brightly. All this meant that by the time I got to the black Rodeo RZ, the roads had dried up well, and the rain showed no signs of a return. I put on my riding jacket, helmet and riding gloves and got on the Black Rodeo RZ. The film city, as the name suggests, is a place where movie makers come to shoot and is a place that is always hustle and bustle with activity. And this day was not going to be an exception and there was a shoot going on right outside the event venue and I had to gently wade through it all, till I reached the open roads. That done, I opened the taps on the Rodeo RZ and was delighted with the responsiveness of the engine. It felt eager and urgent to get going and that’s a good thing in an engine!

Mahindra Rodeo RZ

The Rodeo RZ has the 125 CC ‘Z Series’ engine. This is of course, the same 125cc mill used in the Duro DZ we reviewed last year. The Rodeo RZ too boasts of increased power and an improved fuel consumption, thanks to the new Dual Curve Ignition System. The engine packs 6 KW, or roughly 8 bhp at 7000 rpm and maximum torque of 9 Nm at 5500 rpm. The Rodeo RZ has best in class acceleration claims Mahindra, faster than even the Suzuki Swish. The ARAI certified fuel efficiency figure is 59.38 KMPL, but Mahindra also gives us another figure, around 53 kpl, under the Indian Driving Cycle. The top speed of the scooter has been reduced from 91 kph to 80 kph, but the scooter gets to the 80 kph in no time at all. Overtaking slower moving vehicles on the roads should not be a problem in the Rodeo RZ.

Mahindra Rodeo RZ : Slightly tweaked indicatorsMahindra Rodeo RZ : Rise.
The other change in the RZ is the ride height, which has been increased to a class leading 154 mm. I took the scooter on some pretty bad terrain, strewn with huge boulders and the under side was never scratched. The handling of the scooter is exceptional. It does feel very composed even at high speeds and it does take the corners very well. The suspension has been optimally setup to make sure that the pot holes that are in their millions on our roads can be dealt with. A normal Indian pot hole strewn road couldn’t be found inside the Film City, but there were quite a few bumps and holes on the roads and here, the suspension did its job beautifully.

Mahindra Rodeo RZMahindra Rodeo RZ

The jolts were not transmitted entirely to you, and you could hardly feel the bumps. The Rodeo RZ has the perfect balance of sporty handling and a comfortable ride. Then comes the business of stopping the vehicle. The brakes on the Rodeo RZ are superb. The Rodeo does not have disc brakes, even as an option, but honestly, the drum brakes are just adequate. The only situation where you would miss the disc brakes is when you hit the brakes hard from 70 kph. Make no mistake, the brakes aren’t bad, in fact, even when you brake so hard, the vehicle is still stable, but you do cover a lot of distance before you come to a stop. The drums brakes cannot match the discs in terms of quickness of stopping. But for your average use, these brakes are brilliant.

The Rodeo RZ has a fully digital speedometer, which includes a tachometer, tripmeter, acceleration timer, odometer, speedometer, overspeed alarm, fuel gauge, clock and a side stand buzzer. What the overspeed alarm does is change the back light on the speedometer to red, when you go past 60 kph. And the side stand buzzer is an interesting addition to the features list. The buzzer goes off if you turn on the ignition, without putting up your side stand. This is particularly useful, as many do forget to put up the side stand, and a side stand warning light is mostly ignored, but a buzzer makes sure you don’t ignore it. The scooter also features a MP3/Mobile phone charger.

Convenient fuel filler, mobile phone charger and the works. Mahindra Rodeo still one of the most feature loaded scooters on the market

The 4-in-1 Anti theft key can also be used to open the fuel filler cap. Also the back end of the key can be used to close the key hole itself.

Mahindra Rodeo RZ

The Rodeo RZ also has a best-in-class 22 litres of under seat storage space, which is also illuminated. But still, the storage space could not fit my full faced helmet, which was a bit disappointing. But the space seems quite adequate for the commuter helmets that were presented by Mahindra.

Mahindra Rodeo RZ Boot Space

Styling of the Rodeo RZ is not that much different to the Rodeo. But the design tweaks make you feel like there is a flow to the design, like the design is more complete, somehow. The Rodeo RZ has an option of seven colors, the new additions being Mystique Violet, Electric Green and Flame Orange.

Mahindra says it plans to launch this product within the next couple of weeks, but still hasn’t revealed anything about its pricing. If you are in the market for a sporty scooter, that’s comfortable, cool, fuel efficient, feature laden and fun, look no further. The Rodeo RZ is your answer. It does what you expect of a scooter, and then some more!

Lewis Hamilton 2012 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix 07

After chasing that elusive victory for over six races, Hamilton finally took his deserving victory at the Canadian Grand Prix of the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship. Tense moments were not uncommon, with McLaren almost messing up a pit stop, but Hamilton kept his cool and drove a fantastic race to overtake Vettel and Alonso in the final few laps of the race and claim his victory.

The Lotus Renault E20 proved its ability as being one of the most tyre friendly chassis and Romain Grosjean worked with the chassis, saving the tyre and driving across the finish line second having successfully pulled off the single stop strategy.

Romain Grosjean 2012 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix 12

Sergio Perez was not a very happy man on Saturday. When asked if the Sauber C31 would find favour in the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, he wasn’t entirely positive. “Not at all. The long straights combined with the low downforce causes many problems for us. Also the forecast hot conditions will further heighten the level of difficulty, so as I said: nothing to lose and everything to gain. So let’s look on the winning side!” said Perez.

While the one stop strategy failed Alonso and Vettel, it seems to have worked wonders for Grosjean and Perez. Perez finished the race third having started from 15th!

Schumacher had yet another unlucky weekend having to retire after 45 laps with a rear wing that wouldn’t close perpetually open in DRS mode. Rosberg finished sixth, Webber seventh, Raikkonen eight while Perez’s team mate Kaobayashi finished 9th and Massa completed the top ten finishes.

Even though Red Bull Racing was asked asked to remove the holes in the floor, and then in the axle, all of which were bordering on the fine line between legal and not, Vettel managed to charge past Hamilton to claim pole position in the 2012 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix qualifying.

“We were clear about the car today and able to improve step by step in qualifying. I’m very happy with the result and the laps at the end of qualifying, as we were able to improve each time. It puts us in a great place, but nevertheless tomorrow is more important. We put ourselves in a good position, eight metres ahead of Lewis and then we go from there. It’s supposed to be hotter tomorrow, so it’s important to get a good start and see what we can do. A lot of things can happen.” Vettel said.

Lewis Hamilton, drove his heart out, but had to be content with beating Alonso to the front row.

“I well remember where we were in Australia and if today we are in the fight for pole, it signifies that we have done a good job over the past few months, especially as the others have not exactly been twiddling their thumbs. I am also pleased for Felipe, who is confirming the progress we already saw in recent races: at the start of the championship he was definitely unlucky, but we have always stayed united and now the results are coming, as indeed they should for a driver of his talent.” said Alonso.

Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg were fourth and fifth fastest, while Grosjean, Paul di Resta, Michael Schumacher an Jenson Button complete the top ten on the grid.
