News has emerged that Renault has decided to make its manufacturing facility at Oragadam near Chennai, which it shares with its alliance partner Nissan, as hub for the manufacturing of the Duster SUV (based on the Logan platform) and for the distribution of the same to other countries, just as Nissan does with its Micra hatchback car.  The alliance companies have invested in a very big facility that crank out many numbers and the Indian market currently cannot support so many vehicles.  The plan that Renault-Nissan always had was to make Oragadam an export hub as well as the base for India specific vehicles.

Garware Motors have started distributing the GT 650 and the ST7 motorcycles which are imported as CKDs  from Hyosung Korea and then assembled in India.  Now thanks to the new tax structure, CKDs come under heavy taxation and therefore the motorcycles are not price competitive.  In order to beat this problem it seems Garware Motors have decided to manufacture the Hyosung motorcycles in India.  Watch this space, things could get interesting.

Mahindra and Mahindra entered the two wheeler space in India by buying out the majority share of Kinetic from the Kinetic Motor Company Ltd and this gave them access to scooters that Kinetic was making in collaboration with SYM (San Yang Motors) of Taiwan.  The Flyte was the scooter that was being sold in collaboration with SYM and it featured a 125cc motor.  Mahindra post the purchase has also tinkered with the looks of the Flyte by adding a mud guard at the front and called that scooter the Rodeo.  It then brought out the Kintetic Nova and plonked the same 125cc engine into it and called it the Duro.  Thanks to the tremendous success of the Activa and a long waiting list for that product and with Bajaj having vacated the scooter space, the Mahindra scooters found reasonable acceptance.  Mahindra then went on to announce two motorcycles which they were making with engines sourced from their priced possession Engines Engineering of Italy.

The first motorcycle was the Stallio featuring a 110cc engine and the second was the Mojo featuring a 300cc mill.  The Stallio bombed in the market thanks to rumours that it was being promoted by a man (Amir Khan) who did not even know how to ride a bike.  The result was that there were no takers and the product was withdrawn on the grounds that there were some issues with the gearbox.  Now there is a rumour that the Stallio will be relaunched in November.  There is no news of the Mojo.  Mahindra might find the motorcycle market a much harder nut to crack with so many players offering many reliable products.  The Mojo will be going up against the very capable Kawasaki Ninja 250R and the tremendously priced Honda CBR250R.  That is probably the reason whey Mahindra are not saying  what they plan to with the Mojo.  The success of the Stallio is crucial to Mahindra’s success in the motorcycle space.

Indiancarsbikes.in has broken news that the Lamborghini will make only 20 numbers of the evocatively named Sesto Elemento (sixth element in English and an allusion to carbon which is the 6th element on the periodic table) since most of the car will be made of carbon fibre.  Until now it was believed that Lambo may not make this car at all, but it seems that they will make only 20 cars and give it ultra-exclusivity.

Indiancarsbikes.in is carrying pictures of a version of the Sumo Grande without the name Sumo prefixing the Grande.  Tata vehicles due to their space and pricing are gobbled up by taxi and tour operators and this seems to deter individual buyers from picking these up for personal use.  Tata vehicles have been seeing dwindling sales across all models thanks to newer competition entering each segment.  The Indigo Manza category has seen the launch of the Vento from Volkswagen and more recently the Toyota Etios sedan and in the very near future the Nissan Sunny too will come into the space.  The important thing is that all of them have diesel engines, a trump card that Tata had almost exclusively in the past.  The same is true of the Indica Vista segment with launches like the VW Polo, Nissan Micra, Toyota Etios Liva and all of them again with diesel engine options.  Tata therefore has been trying to market their vehicles by dropping the Indica, Indigo prefixes (but the cars still carry those names in smaller size on the vehicles) and now the Grande (the word Sumo does not appear at all or is this a one off?)

Carwale.com has posted a set of newer spy pictures of the Nissan NV200 van with red number plates signifying that it is a test mule. Interestingly the vehicle is running without any camouflage.  While some auto publications have claimed that the NV200 will be targetted against the best selling Toyota Innova that actually seems a non-possibility.  The NV200 van looks like a commercial vehicle and not a personal vehicle and the fact that Nissan are testing it so openly without any camouflage perhaps is an indication that it will be meant for taxi and fleet operators.  But then the Sunny too was tested without any camouflage by Nissan so it would be very interesting to see how Nissan will position this vehicle in the Indian car bazaar.

Remember the Lamborghini ‘super sports car’ that was to be unveiled at Frankfurt? Turns out Lamborghini has picked up one of its cars racing in the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo (Italy’s idea of a one-make series) and dipped it in the stunning Rosso Mars colour and brought it to Frankfurt.

As Lamborghini puts it ‘The Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale sports a brand new “Rosso Mars” finish that underscores the special connection between ultimate race track performance and Lamborghini’s “Italianness”. The “Rosso Mars” color symbolizes Italy’s traditional racing red, as established at the beginning of last century in motor racing, when the home nations of the competitors were indicated by the color of the paint on the vehicles.’

The huge spoiler, straight off the racing car, is finished in matt black and offers greater aerodynamic load – reaching in the best aerodynamic condition 3 times the load of the Gallardo LP 560-4. The spoiler is manually adjustable to optimize the car’s performance based on track conditions. The engine cover and the front air intakes are also finished in matt black in contrast with the Rosso Mars paint. The forged wheels are painted in high-gloss black, a color that is also available on the roof as an option. The rocker panel covers, the rear diffuser and outside mirror housings are made of carbon fiber polished to a high gloss, while the brake calipers are accented in red for the first time on a Lamborghini. The new Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale is also available upon request in “Grigio Telesto” ( pardon the sacrilege, but for those groping in the dark, that’s grey) or “Bianco Monocerus” ( that’s white) with the roof available in gloss black as an option, as mentioned above.

Alcantara, as we would expect from any Lamborghini, in the much flaunted “Rosso Mars” color is used on the underside of the dashboard, the central part of the seat cushion and the backrest. Black Alcantara with contrasting red top-stitching is used to finish the other parts of the interior. Carbon fiber is also used in abundance. The steering wheel is upholstered in black suede and also features red top-stitching. The door panels, the monocoque racing seats and the center console cover are made of carbon fiber, the construction of which Lamborghini has achieved a world-leading expertise in. Discreet sporty accents are provided by dark chrome visible metal parts. Upon request, an interior layout including elements made of carbon fiber, such as the handbrake frame, the middle of the center console, the lower rim of the steering wheel, the decorative frames around the main and secondary instrument panels, the door handles, and the handle for opening the glove box (also available upon request), can be ordered.

The V10 powerplant generates 570 HP, equivalent to 419 kW, which is fully available at 8000 RPM. The maximum torque is equally impressive, with the torque curve peaking at 540 Nm at 6500 RPM. Gallardo Super Trofeo Stradale offers the robotized e-gear six-speed transmission controlled by steering wheel paddles as standard equipment. For those traffic light GPs, Lamborghini offers the ‘Thrust Mode’ which is Lamborghini’s version of Launch Control, helping any driver achieve ‘racing start’ at an initial engine speed of 5000 rpm.

All-Wheel drive with racing-derived suspension layout ensures you stay on the track regardless of your driving skills. Double aluminum wishbones guide the wheels. Precise rack-and-pinion steering supposedly gives the driver proper feedback from the road. No other model in the Gallardo line is as close to being a true race car. Another great feature is the ultra-lightweight 19-inch wheels, which alone save some 13 kilograms. The lightweight and sturdy wheel bearings and bolts are made from titanium and high performance Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires are fitted.

ESP stability control system is standard equipment. The front axle is equipped with aluminum calipers with eight pistons each, and the calipers on the rear axle have four pistons each.Lamborghini will also install carbon-ceramic brake system upon request. Lamborghini is also offering a number of options for customers on either end of the spectrum. The racing enthusiasts get carbon-fiber ceramic brake discs, but also a tubular interior roll cage, 4-point safety belts and fire extinguisher. On the other hand, those who want to make living with the hardcore Lamborghini easier can equip their Super Trofeo Stradale with a satellite navigation, with Bluetooth connection for mobile phones, an anti-theft system, and a lifting system that raises the front axle.

Of course, at 1340 kg the Super Trofeo Stradale is definitely not the 999 kg lightweight we were expecting Lamborghini to roll out at Frankfurt, but we cannot but nod our heads everytime Lamborghini starts to rave about the Rosso Mars colour wrapped over the most hardcore Gallardo ever!

AMG Ride Control which has been available on the SLS AMG Roadster for a while now, is being offered as an option on the SLS AMG Coupé. AMG RIDE CONTROL sport suspension with adaptive damping aims to offer the best of both worlds of comfort and handling.

The AMG Drive Unit on the SLS AMG equipped with AMG Ride Control now has a button with the shock absorber symbol to enable the driver to make individual, convenient adjustments of the damping characteristics. There is a choice of three modes: “Comfort”, “Sport” and “Sport plus”. The currently selected mode is shown in the AMG main menu.

Blind Spot Assist improves active safety on board the gull-wing model. More optional features such as AMG 10-spoke forged wheels painted in matt black, red-painted brake callipers or AMG high-gloss black trim are also on offer.

From the press release:

“Comfort” is automatically active whenever the engine is started, and provides a sensitive damper responce with comfort-oriented characteristics. “Comfort” is recommended for cruising at moderate speeds – e.g. in urban traffic or on motorway sections with speed restrictions. But even on poor, bumpy road surfaces, “Comfort” mode will be the first choice of many SLS AMG drivers by virtue of the softer damper setup.
To select “Sport” mode the key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT is pressed once. The left control lamp in the key and the AMG main menu display tell the driver that “Sport” mode has been manually activated. In “Sport” mode the shock absorbers have a tauter response depending on the driving situation, which not only ensures better road contact when driving in a sporty manner, but also more effectively reduces body roll and pitching. In most driving situations, “Sport” mode provides the best compromise between satisfactory suspension comfort, low body movements and high agility.
“Sport plus” is recommended for fast lap times on a race circuit: apart from higher damping forces, this mode has special control algorithms configured for a decidedly sporty driving style on uneven road surfaces. The driver is able to store his personal setup using the AMG key in the AMG DRIVE UNIT. Sustained pressure on the AMG symbol stores the currently selected suspension mode and also the selected transmission mode. As before, the driver has four different transmission modes available: fuel economy mode “C” (Controlled Efficiency), “S” (Sport), “S+” (Sport plus) and “M” (Manual). Brief pressure on the AMG key quickly and conveniently activates the preferred combination.

Blind Spot Assist

Blind Spot Assist is able to increase active safety by using the close-range radar sensors of the standard PARKTRONIC system to recognise vehicles in the driver’s blind spot, and a red triangle lights up in the relevant exterior mirror. If the driver proceeds to indicate a direction change, into the detected vehicle’s lane, an acoustic warning starts to sound.

Blind Spot Assist is operational from a speed of 30 km/h. It monitors the area around the vehicle to a distance of around 3.5 metres on each side and three metres beyond the rear. Vehicles in the process of overtaking are shown immediately when they enter the monitored area if the difference in relative speeds between the two vehicles is not more than 16 km/h. Vehicles that have just been overtaken are however shown with a delay of 1.5 seconds after entering the monitored area, thus preventing unnecessary warnings.
