Chevrolet Sail U VA Launch 01

Mr. Lowell Paddock, President and Managing Director, GM India and Mr Ashwani Muppasani, VP-Sales, Marketing & After sales, GM India

While not everyone might agree with us, at Riot Engine we think the original Chevrolet U-VA was a fantastic car deserving all your affection. GM India has launched their new hatch, the Sail U-VA. The car has a lot to live upto and we are looking forward to seeing if the new U-VA can steal a place in our hearts like the old one did.

GM India has priced the base variant of the Chevrolet Sail U-VA at Rs 4.44 Lakhs ( ex showroom) Delhi and offers front power windows, power adjustable outside mirrors, tilt steering and day & night inside rear view mirrors for that price point. The LS variant adds rear power windows, central locking, driver airbags, leather wrapped steering wheel and body coloured ORVMS, fog lamps. The LS variant can be equipped with ABS in what is called an LS ABS variant. While the audio system with Bluetooth connectivity is available on the LS ABS trim, it isn’t on the LS trim.

Engines on offer are the petrol 1.2 litre Smartech and the 1.3 litre SDE Smartech diesel engine.

The petrol is good for a peak power 86PS at 6000rpm and maximum torque of 113 Nm at 5000rpm . The engine was designed by GM Technical Center-India in cooperation with GM India’s Talegaon engine plant in Pune. The engine features aluminum cylinder heads, a deep skirt cylinder block and lightweight pistons with low-tension rings, which decrease weight and maximize fuel economy. A long-runner plastic intake manifold provides good low-end torque and a lightweight counterbalanced crankshaft limits NVH.

The new 1.3 litre SDE Smartech diesel makes 78 @ 4000rpm and 205 @ 1750 rpm. The diesel was developed for India by the GM Diesel Engine Technical Center in Turin, Italy, with the support of engineers in Pune and Bangalore. Lightweight aluminum alloy DOHC cylinder head, lightweight pistons with graphite-coated skirts that have anti-friction properties, and low-tension piston rings reduce weight and increase fuel economy. Torsional vibration dampers are provided for lesser NVH. GM says the engine also has a low-inertia valvetrain with hydraulic lash adjusters and a lifetime maintenance-free timing chain.

The 1.3 litre SDE Smartech’s advanced common rail fuel injection system, close-coupled diesel oxidation catalyst, and electrically operated and water-cooled external EGR reduce emissions. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a technique used in most diesel engines to meet emission standards. Nearly 5 to 30% of the exhaust gases are cooled and and directed back into the combustion chamber where the peak temperature is reduced and thus less NOx particles are produced. The EGR system in the Sail U-VA has a pneumatically controlled EGR bypass. A fixed-geometry turbocharger with a vacuum-operated waste gate for smooth and efficient operation delivers superior torque from very low engine rpms.

The Sail U-VA comes with a three-year/100,000-km standard warranty. In addition, customers can opt for a unique add-on service maintenance package, the Chevrolet Promise, which provides free maintenance for three years or 45,000 km (whichever comes first). GM is also offering a 5 Year/50,000 km powertrain warranty.

Colors on the Sail include Super Red, Switchblade Silver, Summit White, Caviar Black, Linen Beige, Sandrift Grey and Misty Lake. We like the Super Red and the Sandrift Grey. What are your favourites?
